accomplished their aim with impunity. 1
was horror struck; a swimming sensation
overjoy eyes, my limbs tailed me, and I
fell senseless.
When I recovered, I found myself lying
CD a bed. Every thing was still. I listen*
gj in vain t>r a sound; 1 lay stdl a consid
erable time; at last, I rose aid walked
about the ship, but could see no one i
searched every part of the vessel: I visited

carefully avoided: I counted nine bodies,
judthe coagulated blood formed a loath
some mass around them; I shuddered to
(bink I was desolate, the companion of
death. “Good God!” says I, “and tiny
have left me here alone!” The word soun
ded like a knell to me. It now occurred
lume it was necessary the bodies should be
ibrown over board, I took up one of them,
draped it to the side and plunged it into
the waves, but the dash of the heavy body
into the sea, reminded me more forcibly ol
my loneliness.’ The sea was so calm, I

Ae watery grave At last my horrible
task was finished. My next work was to
look for the ship s -boats, but they were
gone, as I expected.*” I could not bear to
remain in the ship; it seemed a vast tomb
for mo. I resolved to make some sort of a
raft, and depart in if. This occupied two
or three day*; at length it was comple
ted, and I succeeded in setting it afloat.
I lowered into it all the provisions I
could find in the ship, which was but little,
(Qe saiiers having, as I imagined, carried
off the remainder I trembled at the thought
of the danger I was about to ericounrer.—
1 was going to commit myself to the ocean,
separat and from it only by a few boards,

or meet with any vessel to rescue me from
my danger, and I should be exposed vv th

ofsuch a measure. I descended; I stood
on my frail raft; I cut the rope by w hich

on the waste of waters. I endeayoured to

tould see, nothing presented itself to my

tould continue, 1 should perish ol hunger.
I longed to see the little sail I had

A little water which had fortunately re

Wished that the waves would rush over me.
My hunger soon became dreadful, but I
had no means ofrelieveingit, I endeavored
to sleep, tiiat I might for a while forget
my torments, and wearied frame yielded
awhile to slumber. When I awoke I was
not however refreshed; I was weak, and
felt a burning pain at my stomach.- I be
came hourly more feeble—l lay down, but
was unable to rise again. My limbs lost
their strength; my lips and tongue were
parched; a convulsive shuddering agitated
me ; my eves seem darkened and I gasp

The burning at my stomach now depar
ted ; I experienced no pain ; but a dull
torpor came over me; My hands and feet
became cold ; I believed I was dying, and
rejoiced at the thought Presently I lost
all thought or feeling and lay without sense
on a few boards which divided me from the
ocean In this situation, l was afterwards
informed, I was taken up by a small vessel
and carried to a seaport town. I slowly re
covered and found that I alone of all who
were on board the vessel in which I em
barked, had escaped death. The crew
who had depaitedin the boats after mur
dering the captain, had met their reward
the boats were shattered against a rock.

scarce worth noticing. A few’ sales oi nndd.ing

in consequence of the purchases made last wee
for the West Indies. We qubte prime at 34 ; in

Bagging —ls not very plenty at present ; prime

COMMERCIAL.
Extract of letter, received in Ncw-York , dated
Havre lsi. July, 1828.
Our Cotton market remains very firm, but
rather inactive, as you will perceive by our list of
sales. Our stock, of this day, is 51,123 bales.—
We are not alarmed by the present backward
ness of buyers, nor, on the other hand, elated by
the certainty of the crop of the United States
being much smaller than that of last year.—
We see no good reason to fear a decline, and, as
little, tor expecting any important improvements
from present rates. The prices here will bo re
gulated by the quantity on hand, aud come forward
before the new crop can be brought into market:
and, we think, there will be quite suffieieut to
satisfy the demand of the manufacturers. Ashes,
Pots, (L 828) remain at 40 and 41 francs: Pearls
are a little better —64 barrels have been sold at 42
and 50 francs.
