I.ircrpool Sept. I.—The sales of cotton in our
market the last week (from the 23d to the 29th ult.
inclusive) amount to 13550 hags, viz : 130 Sea
Islands, at 13J a 17d; 30 stained do. 7 1-2; 6540
Uplands, 6450, a 6 7-8; 90, 7a 7 3-8; 1710
Orleans. 1685, 6 1-4 a 8; 2>, 9 ; 980 Alabamas,
930,5 5-8 a 6 1-2, 50, 7 ; 3470 Brazils, 7 3-8 a 8
3-8; 190 Demararas, &;c. 7 7-8 a 8 1-8; Egyp
tian, 7 1-4 a8; 370 Surals and Bengals, 3 3-4 a
4 3-4d.
In the early part of the week there was only a
moderate business doing chiefly to spinners. On
Thursday and Friday several extensive dealers
came into the market and purchased rather large
lv. (the sales on the latter day were estimated at
5000 bags, 1400 of them Uplands, at. 6 l-4d, in
one lot,) but. this increased business caused no
change in the desire of holders to sell, or the ten
dency of prices to decline. Most of the business
done in the middle and lower qualities of Ameri
can and Brazil cotton, has been at a decline of
1-8 per lb. About 890 bags of Am. and Brazils
have been taken by the speculators. ‘I he i iport
into this port since the Ist. January, amounts to
479,000 bales, against 603,000 for the same period
last year ; but there is a decrease in the supply
from the United States of 169,000 bales.
On Saturday the 30th ult. the sales were esti
mated at 4060 bales; in price there was no change.
‘I he prominent business of the day was tlie sale of
800 Alabamas at 6 1-8, and 409 Louisianas at
6 3-4d.
Rice. —Tlie sales amount, to 130 casks, quality
ordinary to middling, at iss Od, a 17s 6d per
cwt.
Tobacco. —The sales of the past month amount
to 554 hhds consisting of 237 Virginia leaf, and
204 stemmed : 26 Kentucky leal, s4 stemmed,
and 3 Alary land. A large portion of the business
done the last week. In prices there is no change.
Tiie stock on the 2 lit ult. wjs 7 )7 hhds.
Flour, and aii kinds of corn, owing to the fine
weather and improved prospect of the fanners,
have been dull of sale, and prices arc lower.
Extract of a letter dated Liverpool, Aug. 29, 1826
Excepting only a few hundred bags for exporta
tion the sales of the week are ali to the trade ; &
although the amount of business has been consid
erable, yet the desire of holders to sell has been
such, that to accomplish it l-3d reduction in the
common kinds of Americans and Brazils has been
submitted to.
In Bea Islands very little is doing, and other
kinds are dihicuii of sale.
Glasgow, Aug. 30, 1828.
Colton Market. —The sales of cotton this week
have been very limited, amounting only to 499
bales, which sold as follows :—126 iioweds, 6 l-2d
fair, 64-d good fair, 7d good: 14 Orleans, 7 l-4d
fair; 200 “Egyptians, 8 7-8d to OdqjofllL; 67 De

1 8 7-8d fine ; 92 West Indies, 6 7-8d good. 9 here
1 has beeu no importation this week.
| London Markets. Aug. 29.—The average sales
t of Muscovado sugar up to yesterday, continued to
nearly 1009 hhds per day, with a steady demand at
full price. The demand was not so brisk to day,
1 owing to the trade being in some measure engaged
with the Ten Prompt. At the conclusion of the
market, tlie estimated sales of the week are again
as nearly as possible 4000 hhds.—prices lir .. —
I Molasses more in demand, but without any vaiiir
j tion in the currency. Small lots of Havana su
gars have sold very high, on account of the
; scarcity ; very fine yellow 40s ; good white 50.
1 Tlie Coffee Market continues firm and improving;
; all the finer descriptions of Jamaica soil freely at
1 advancing prices ; tlie unclean, low and good or
dinary seil at prices much fewer than the usunt
i proportions to fine qualities. The foreign descrip
j tions are inquired alter, but few parcels offer ; for
good ordinary St. Domingo 6d to 34s and Uis
;Od paid. There is no alteration in the prices of
! indigo, but the demand continues considerable ,
j the chief sales are at 2d per lb. advance on the
• late India House sale. There is no reduction in
j tlie prices of Rice, but the market is heavy anil
, the sale quite inconsiderable. The only sale of
i Tobacco of atTy consequence is 180 hhds. Mary
land to a dealer at There is no alteration in
the prices of saltpetre. The cotton market has
j been dull, but the prices unvaried ; the purchases
by private contract have been inconsiderable : 40
Bowed Georgia at 5 7-Bd. At the East India
] House sale this day, 2542 bales Bengal cotton.
! 1500 Surat, and 171 Madras ; on the whole, the
sale established a decline upon the one of the 6th
jof June of fully Id per lb. The corn market con
■ tiuues in a state of stagnation to day, on account
of the continuance of very fine weather; if
sales wore forced, a considerable reduction must
be submitted to ; but there are no sales. The mar
ket is nominally the same as on Monday.
[by the shif chancellor.]
I JSVtfl. York Markets Oct. 2.—Cotton —The sales
• have len much less extensive since the 25th ult
than during the preceding week, and the prices
then current have been scarcely maintained, al
though we can only quote a shade lower. The
transactions comprise about 17 f 0 bales, of which
800 were Uplands, at 9 1-2 a 11 1-2; 700 do N.
Orleans and Tennessee, at 10 a 10 1-2; 60 bales
: at 14cts. 4 mos. for manufacturers ; 4- loOdo. Ala
bama, at 9 1-2 a 10 1-2 ; and a few as above at 12.
Coal. —Goes of readily. The retail price for
Liverpool is sl2.
Flour. —The accounts from England, which are
by no means as favorable as was anticipated, have
had no apparent effect on the market. Holders
i are firm and confidently look for a deficiencv m
j the crops of this country and < anada to sustain
their prices. A sale of Western f amu was inauo
yesterday at $7, and we saw tetters from Roches
ter of Saturday last, which state that tb A R [ tlC f.
is there held at #B, There been sales ot
Petersburg at $6 12 as6 25 Rye flour is very
scarce.
Grain. —Western wheat is verv scarce in mar
. ket. At Rochester, by the last account it was
held at the high rate of $4 50 cents per bushel*
There have been large sales of Virginia at $1 30
a $1 40.
| Rice. —Nothing doing. There is too little in
j market to admit of any transactions worthy of ;
note.
, Salt. —Sells very readily at. our quotations.
Tobacco.-*- At private sales, we have nothing to
report.
