SATURDAY MORNING, APRIL 20.
COMMERCIAL.
Extract of a letter received in this city dated
Liverpool, March 22,1839.
The sales for the week ending the Bth instant,
amounted to 88,900 bales, about 40,000 of it to
speculators; for the week ending 15th inst. they
were 60,750 bales, about 43,000 of it on specula
tion, and tliis week they amount to 49,820 bales,
19.000 of it taken by speculators. Os this week’s
business 17,069 are Upland, at 7j a 9 Jd ; 17,050
Orleans at a 10J, 2,520 Alabama and Mobile at
Sa 10a, and ICO Sea Island at 22 a 36d per pound.
Fair qualities may be quoted 9J a 9gd. The im
port into Liverpool since the Ist January, amounts
to 210,000 bales against 365,000 to same period last
season; the supply from the United States is 158,-
000, being a decrease of about one half. The stock
in this port js estimated at 234,000; of which about
182.000 is American Cotton.
Liverpool, March 15.
Cotton.— During the former part of the week the
demand for cotton continued regular, and to a mod
erate extent, both for the trade and for speculation
account. The arrival of the Great Western, how
ever, with orders for goods, reported to be on an
extensive scale, and with confirmed advices as to a
large deficiency in the American suppl,-, has given
a renew'ed impulse to the market since Wednesday,
and tiie increased speculation inquiry since then, in
conjunction with tolerable trade demands, has given
an additional impetus to prices of nearly all des
criptions.
We quote American of middle and inferior qual
ity fd. liner sorts Id, and Brazil j to fd per pound
higher than last week’s prices. Owing to the un
favorable accounts from the East Indies of the
crops, there has been a large business doing in Su
rats on speculation, at an advance ot fully gd per
pound.
The sales of the week amount to 60,732 bags, of
which speculators have taken 25,000 American,
2500 Pernams, 700 Bahias, 1500 Maranbam, 1600
Carthagenas, 2300 Surats—total 43,600 ; and ex
porters 100 American. The imports of the week
are —8259 American, 2200 Maranhams, 908 com
mon West Indian, 270 Egyptian, 5 Surats—total
11,651.
March 20.
Cotton. —The sales on Thursday last were 15,000
bags, 111,000 of which were taken on speculation ;
Friday 10,000,8,000 on speculation ; Saturday 3000,
700 on speculation ; .Monday 6000, 2000 on specu
lation ; Tuesday 6000, 3001) on speculation ; and
to-day 10,000, 3000 on speculation. There has
been a very extensive demand since last week,
principally, however, from speculators. In prices
A nerii an and Brazils have advanced | aJd , Egyp
tian, A ; and Surats id per lb. The import of the
week amounts to 35.484 bags.
March 22—2 o’clock, P. M.
The business in cotton was closed at 2 o’clock
to-day, instead of 3, as usual, on account of the
sailing of the Great Western, and we are thus cr
aided to give a statement of the week’s transac
tions.
The demand still continues, and holders are firm.
The sales of the week (from 16th to this day inclu
sive) are 40,820 bales, namely. 160 Sea Island, 150
Stained Up'and, 17,050 New-Orleans.
2520 Mobile, 990 Pernambuco, 1710 Baida, 1350
, . Maranhatn. 50 Mina and Para, 280 Laguavra, 660
GatrfT.WVest India, 80 Smyrna, 1530 Egyptian, 6169 (
Surat, and 70 Bengal; of wbii h specu ators have
taken 14,000 American, 4250 Surat, 350 Egyptian,
200 Bahia 150 Pernambuco, and 100 Maranbam.
The imports between the above dates are 42,239
hales.
Havre, March 1.5.
During the last day or two there has been less
excitement, and indeed a rather quiet market for
cotton, though still not unimportant business was
done at steady prices.
A ntwere, March 18.
Cotton was in much request, and 1800 bales *
North American sold at an improvement of 1 to I i
cents above the price paid at the beginning of the
week ; some East India cotton was so'd to advan
tage.

him linger out lus latter days with smi’eiiiw almost
indescribable ; all of which he bore with

was enabled to say in his last illness to one of his
Christian brethren, that his way was clear and that

the Lord. .May not such exclaim with truth and

“ Oh ? Death where is thy stin£ ?
