} Our brother of the Magnolia we observe, ly
| hH number for March, which is on our table, is
of the true Addisonian School, desirine, always
| to present the brightest side of the picture, so
• that if we were vain enough to desire to see our
‘ self in print on his cover, we must not only give
the puff direct, but wo must avoid oven a cen
sure of the typography of tire Magnolia. This
is all very well, and although it is the way of
the world, the world is sometimes gulled. It is
however not gulling Georgians, or even an at
tempt at it to say that the Magnolia, the matter
of which was always jgoor/, is now very much
improved in typography, so much ho indeed,
that although susceptible yet of still further im
provement in that department, it now presents
i neat exterior, while its matter is a store house*
in which are garneird many choice gems, from
the minds ol those not unknown to fame. Wo
therefore congratulate the editor, and his readeis

Mi sers. Editors :—My attention was attracted
to a short editorial in your paper of Thursday
morning, which it seems was induced by a corres
pondence sent for publication, in which 1 think you
say that bank' in receiving notes for collection are
but carrying oat commercial transactions, and as
agents, are obliged to abide instructions, See. This,
I think, admits of some comment; my opinion is,
that the whole objei 9m hanks receiving notes for
collection is to bring business to'the institution; a
mcicbant, lor instance, makes a purchase of a
dozen hogshead lor which he gives his note
pay able in 60 or 00 days; it is well known that few
dealers can realize the lull amount on any one ar
-1 itrle w hat they nave to pay by u fixed peiiod; the
i note i>. however, lodged in a bank for collection,
j where it has to be met punctually. Now w hat is
the courseol the payer ? llehas probably' realized
some five or six hundred dollars on his sugar, to
raise th? balau '? he mukei a note in favor of some
friend, whi h u' endorsed and discounted by the
i Dank; this accommodates him and profits the msti
tulion, and it is, a? I above, to draw this kind
! ofbusines* that banks, in their original conception,
assumed the trouble of 'collecting the notes of in-
J diviiuals; thus virtually saying, u> the col
led .on of these avUler~ and ts the drawer i- not
: whoily able to pay them at maturity we are estab
; lished to and will assist him.
As my object is simply to illustiale, i do not di
late much on minutiae; nor dr. I presume that this
applies to bank of the present day. but that such
was the object bank:, had in view when first estab
lished, I think cannot be much questioned. Now,
sirs, the difference between us G simply this, you
say a bank G the agent, N.c. of the holder or owner
of the note; 1 say also, it is in some respect an
agent, but 1 *.ay also, banks do not now adhere to
what appears to me ought to characleii/e them, if
! the banks t ike notes for collection, they ought, in
| stead ol throwing dilhrultles in the way of the
; payers, to afford them, at least, reasonable facili
| -ties ; and unless they do do <o, they ought not to
: t&c them .it all.
1 do not make this communication »> ith a view
S of having it appear in your paper unless it is your
pleasure to insert it; my object ir- simply to point
; out what is originally the causes why banks take
; notes io collect, and also to demonstrate vvbat I
: thini. is their duty to the community. If the sub
ject at all meets your view*, you can make such
| use of these remark? U' may meet y* ur conven
