Thf I'nrntier Troubles,
The acquittal of McLe.ul and the prompt
giving up of Grogan, have tor u moment at w
least, done away with all cause fur bad feeling
between our frontier people and their Canadian
neighbors, and we consequently trust that per
fect harmony will soon be testorod to the diplo

Os the conduct of both of these, under occur- y
rcnces, which, if iiratioually treated, might imvo p
led to a stale of things over which humui j*y t
would weep, we think the people of bti!i c«>Un* f

large be thankful for.—The destruction of the c
Caroline, if justifiable ut all, was only to br justi
fied by the great, first law of self preservation, i
and the existence of such an emergency is ne :
cessarily a question of doubtful character, still it
must be admitte I there was sornribing to exten

tej a rat ion made, il is true, by Mr. Van Bureii,
yet faintly pressed, whilst the British Govern- :

act, by bestowing rewards on those who partici
pated in it, or honors on the officer who immedi
ately commanded, lest in so doing they might
wound the keen souse of honor ot u high »q»ir it

And thus matters might have quietly rested,
had not the arrest of McLeod taken place on our
Territory. 'Flic two governments immediately
-.top in—the one by assuming the act the other
by exacting u strict accountability for it—thus
placing its final adjustment bevond the reach ol
popular impulses. But the I’rovinciul Govern
ment of Canada went Mill further, and n» get rid
of the unexpect'd difficulty presented by our
