CHRONICLE & SENTINEL.
POETRY AND MISCELLANY.
To Laura>—TMß mystery of reminiscence*.
Who, and what gave to me the wish to woo thee—
Still, lip to lip, to cling for aye unto thee?
Who made thy glances to my soul the link—
Who bade me bum thv very breath to drink ?
My life in thine to sink?
As from the conqueror’s unresisted glaive,
Flies, without strife subdued, the ready slave—
So, when to life’s ungarded fort, I see
Thy gaze draw near and near triumphantly—
Yields not my sou! to thee ?
Why from its lord doth thus my soul depart?
Is it because its native home thou art ?
Or were they brothers in the days of yore ?
Twin-bound both souls, and inthe links they bore
Sigh to be bound once more ?
Were once our beings blent and intertwining,
And therefore still my heart for thee is pining?
Knew we the light of some extinguished sun—
The joys remote of some bright realm undone,
Where once our souls were one ?
Y'es, it is so! And thou wert bound to me
In the long vanished hours eternally !
In the dark troubled tablets which enroll
The Past—my Muse beheld this blessed scroll—
“ One with thy love my soul!”
Oh yes, I learn’d in awe, when gazing there,
How once one bright inseparate life we were,
How once one glorious essence as a god,
Unmeasured space our chainless footsteps trod —
All Nature our abode !
Round us, in waters of deligh*, forever
Voluptuously flowed the heavenly nectar river;
We were the master of the seal oi things,
And where the sunshine bathed Truth’s mountain
spri ngs
Quivered our glancing wings.
Weep for the god-like life we lost afar
Weep? thou and I its scattered fragments are;
And still the unconquer’d yearning we retain —
Sigh to restore the rapture and the reign,
And grow divine again.
And therefore camo to me the wish to woo thee—
Still, lip to lip, to cling for aye unto thee ;
TYlis made thy glances to my soul a link —
This made me burn thy very breath to drink —
My life.n thine to sink.
And therefore, as before the conqueror’s glaive,
Flies, without strife subdued, the ready slave,
So, when to life’s unguarded fort, I sec
Thy gaze draw near and near triumphantly—
Yieldelh my soul to thee!
Therefore my soul doth from its lord depart,
Because, beloved, its native home thou art,
Because the twins recall the links they bore,
And soul with soul in the sweet kiss of yore,
Meets and unites once more.
Thou too —Ah, there thy gaze upon me dwells,
And thy young blush t e tender answer tells.
Yes! with the dear relation still we thrill,
Both lives—tho* exiles from the homeward hill:
One life —all glowing still!
[Blackwood' s Magazine.
♦This moat exquisite love poem is founded on the
Platonic notion, that souls were united in a pre-exis
tent state, that love is the yearning of the spirit to re
unite with the spirit with which it formerly made one
—and which it discovers on the earth. The idea has
oPen been made subservient to poetry, but never with
*o earnest and elaborate beauty.
We are Wiser titan we Know.
Thou, who in the midnight silence
Lookeat to the orbs on high,
Feeling humble yet elated,
In the presence of the sky ;
Thou, who minglest with thy sadness
Pride ecstatic, awe divine,
That e’en thou canst trace their progress,
And the law by which they shine ;
Intuition shall uphold thee,
E’en though reason drag thee low ;
Lean on faith, look up rejoicing,—
We are wiser than wo know.
Thou, who hearest plaintive music,
Or sweet songs of other days;
Heaven-revealing organs pealing
Or clear voices hymning praise,
And would’st weep, thou kuow’st not wherefore,
Though thy soul is steeped in toy,
And the world looks kindly on thoo,
And thy bliss hath no alloy —
Weep, nor seek for consolation,
Let the heaven-sent droplets flow,
They are hints of mighty >ecrets, —
We are wiser than we know.
Thou, who in the noon-time brightness
Scest a shadow undefined;
Heur’st a voice that indistinctly
Whisper* caution in thy mind;
Thou, who hast a vague foreboding
That a peril may be near,
E’en when Nature smiles around thee,
And thy Conscience bolds thee clear—
Trust the warning, look before thee,
Angels may the mirror show, —
Dimly anil, but sent to guide thee, —
We are wiser than we know.
Count lew chords of heavenly music,
Struck ere earthly time began.
Vibrate in immortal concord,
To the answering soul of man;
<’<»• >•’.'«« rays ot heavenly glory
Shi 'trough spirit pent in day,
On wise men nt their labors.
On tue childrenat their play.
Man has gazed on heavenly secrets,
Sunned himself in heavenly glow,
Seen the glory, heard the music, —
We are wiser than we know.
The subjoined extract from the gifted Shki.-
lit breathes so much of the “Had, still music
of humanity/* that it must sink deep into every
hear*:
A Moon-lit Battle-Field.
How beautiful this night ’ the bahnies*. sigh
Which vernal zephyrs breathe in Evening’s ear,
Were discord to the speaking quietude
That wraps this moveless scene. Heaven’s el>on
vault
Studded with stars unutterably bright.
Through which the moon’s unclouded grandeur rolls,
Seems like a canopy which Love had spread
To curtain the sleeping world. Yon gentle hills.
Robed in a garment of untrodden snow ;
Yon daiktuHiie rocks, whence icicles depend,
So stainless, tha> their white and glittering spires
Tinge not the moon’s pure beam ; yon castle Hteep,
Whose banner hangeth o’er the time-worn tower
So idly, that rapt fancy deeineth it
A metaphor of peace : all form a scene
Where inusing solitude might love to lift
Her soul above this sphere of earthlmess;
Where silence undisturbed might watch alone,
So cold, so bright, so still I
The orb of day,
In southern climes, o’er ocean’s waveless field
Sinks sweetly smiling ; not the faintest breath
Steals o'er the unruffled deep; the clouds ot eve
Retied unmoved the lingering beam ofdav;
And Vesper’s image on the western mam
la beautifully still. To-morrow comes :
Cloud upon cloud in dark and deepening mass,
Rolls o’er the blackened waters; the deep roar
Os distant thunder mutters awfully ;
Tempest unfolds its pinions o'er the gloom,
That shrouds the boiling surge; the pitiless fiend
With all its winds and lightning tracks his prey ;
The torn deep yaw ns; the vessel finds a grave
Beneath its jagged gulf.
Ah ! whence yon glare
That fires the arch of heaven ? that dark red smoke
Bloating the silver inoon ? The stars are quench'd
In darkness, and the pure sparkling snow
(ileams faintly through the gloom that gathers roum .
Hark to the roar, whose swift and deafnmg peals
In countless echoes through the mountains ring,
Startling pale midnight on her starry throne !
Now swells the intermingling dm, the jar,
Frequent and frightful, ot the bursting bomb;
The tailing beam, the shriek, the groan, the shout.
The ceaseless clangor, and the rush of men
Inebriate with rage! loud and more loud
The discord grown; till pale Death shuts the acene
And o’er the conquer’d draws
His cold and bloody shroud. Os all the men
" horn clay's departiag beam saw blooming there’
How few survive, how few are twating now !
All m deep silence, like the fearful calm
That slumbers in the storm’s portentous pause;
Save where the frantic wad of widow’d love
Comes shuddering on the blast; or the faint moan
With which some roul bursts from the frame of clay
" rapt round its struggling powers
The gray morn
Ifawns on thvinourntul scene ; the sulphurous smoke
Before the icv wind slow rolls away.
And iha bright beams of frosty moroing dance
Alor.g the sparkling snow. There tracks of blood.
Even to the toiest’s depth, and scatter’d arms,
Andbfeless warriors, whose hard lineaments
Death’s selfcould change not, mark the dreadful path
Ot theovtsallying victors; far behind
Black ashes note where their proud city stood.
