From tht Charles! tm Ceurisr.
Late from Rawann.
The steamship Isabel, Capt. Rellins, snired
at this port about midnight on Saturday eren-
Ingfram Havana which pert she l»ft on Tues
day last. She touched at key West on ihe
evening of the same day.
The only impartant item of intelligence
brought by the Isabel, Is that refining le the
ease of Mr. Thrasher, late editor of the Spanish
journal the Faro Industrial, the publication of
which It will be recollect.d was suspended by
order of the Captain General.
A correspondent Informs us that Mr. Thrash
er’s paper was considered a Cresle organ, and to
bein opposition to the Spanish journal, Diorio
de la Marina, the editors of which, together
with a clique of old Spaniards, wore consequent
ly hia enemies, and had influence enough after
the execution of Lopez, to procure the suspen
sion of his r»p«r. which was done about the Ist
of September last. This was ruinous to him,
inasmuch as the demand for his paper had in
creased so largely aa to induce him to Import a
new preas from Now York, and to incur other
heavy expenses to bring out his issue in proper
style- all of which labor and expense was, of
course lost. He, howovsr, retained the hope
that the Captain General wouia soon allow him
to resume his publication, and in the mean time,
devoted hiraeeif to the alleviation of th» suffer
ings of those cf his fellow countrymen who
were then about eallhir for Spain es prisoners.
But these very acts e‘ kindness to these whom
the Spaniards deemed pirates, made him still
more obnoxious to his enemies, and likewise at
tracted the attended of tha Government officials
towards him, who thsraupon accused him of
having been connected with the expedition, al
though thay could not definitely understand in
what precise wey the connection bad existed.
The police, therefore, were o-dered to watch
strictly all hie movemants. His letters were
stopped and examined at the post office, but
these being msrely letters of business, and
thanks from the relatives and friends of the
prisoners he had succored, nothing to criminate
him could be eliei»cd from their contents. The
police were then Informed that his private cor
respendsnee erne to him by the steamers.
Consequently when the Georgia arrived from
Now Orleans,ltwo policeofficers gent-ely dressed
In citizen's appar»l, followed him rn beard end
perceived him receive and poeket a letterhnnded
rim by the clerk of the beat. The officers fol
lowed him to the shore, and on his lauding ar
rested him and took him to tho bureau cl the
Chiefef Police, where ha was searched but no
thing was found on him bet the letter elready
alluded to, which waa merely one on purely pri
vate business. He was, however, dettfned un
der surveillance, sleeping at the police bureaus,
ard taking his meals at iho different heteie. al
ways accompanied by a police officer. This
state of affairs lasted two nr three days, when
all at oace a letter was prwinced, which wss
said to have bean found sealed, and directed to
Mr. Thrasher, on ths desk in his office, and al
though there was no nest mark on it cr any
thing to indicate whore it came from it was
alleged that It had bson brought by the Georgia.
It was then handvd to Mr. Thrasher to open,
which he did in preeence of the officers, and to
his utter astonishment dlscovcred'that It was
written in cypher. He at once protested his
totalirnoraace of its contents, end from whence
It could possibly have emanated But his denial
waaef no avail, and ho was Immedia’ely placed
in solitary eenflnotnentin the prison, where he re
malnad until Saturday, tee 25th Bit., when he was
removed to rhe Punta Fort, and there placed in a
dungeon ; whieh, oar correspondent has been in
formed by those who know the place we I, is an
excavation in tho rock on a level with the sea,
always wet below anjl damp above, and having
only a small round holo to admit the light. In
this loathsome den the only furniture Is a board
with two cleets on the ends, which serves as a
bsd at night, and In the day as a scat to keep
the feet from ths wet end s Imo of tho bottom.
No one was allowed to visit him, and Mr. Owen
states that he applied for permission, hut receiv
ed as a reply from the Captain General, that he
should be admitted as seen as any one.
On the day prior to ihe departure of the Isabel,
oar correspondent eaw ths mother of Mr.
Thraaher In tears at the office nt Mr. Fx Consul
Owen, endsavoring io get some Information re
sneering her eon. Sh» wished to learn front Mr
Owes if ehe could see tho Captain General.
Ha answered no, but suggested that the judge
would give her liberty to see him. This pro
eroding of Mr. Owen seems, says our corres
pondent, strange, when it Is wsli known that he
could have taken her la a moment to the Cap
tain-General, to whom she merely wished to
state her Seaira to epeak a word ol com nrt to
her son, and see whether he had any provisions
supplied him, &e.
A report was current al the sailing of the
Isabel, that Mr. Thrashsr had been tried and
condemned to the Mines, but although it was
believed that auch was the care, no authoritative
confirmation of tho rumors had been made
known.

Tennessee River, 59 miles, (by the River) below
Knoxville, and 175 ab< ve ChattJ’.noojra. The Enst
Tcnnes-jc and Georgia Railroad, now in operation
to Athens, 55 miles above Dalton, will be finished to
Lcud:n, 25 miles further, by the first cf March
next.
Thia location offers extraordinary inducements to
men, as for several y&aisit will be the ter
minus of the Railr od, and will command in a great
msTJSixie the trade of tipper East Tennessee, and
portions cf Virginia, Kentucky and North Carolina.
And from its position aa the centre of a fertile and
populous section of country, it must retain a heavy
trade as cr tho Railroad is continued to and through
Virginia. A very extensive and rich region of
country, drained by tbo Clinch, the Little Tennes
see, and the Teliico Rivers, all of which are naviga
ble for steamboats, must always make this point its
market, and it must also command a large portion of
;hfj boating trade of the Tennessee River above Chat
*i»ooga. The ea«e cf access by navigable rivers to
Loudon from the immense iron and coal beds for
which East Tennessee is noted, renders it a most fo
verabto location for manufacturing purposes, and
strong inducements will ! e offered bv the proprietors
to these who wish to engage in manufacturing.
The situation is healthy and desi.-atle as a place
of resort from the lower country in the Summer
months.

SANDS’ SARSAPARILLA
IN QUART BOTTIiJSS,
FOR PDRIFTINO THK BLO«D, »Bd
for the cure of Scrofula, Mercurial Diseape®,
Rheumatism, Cutaneous Er uptions, Stubborn Ul
cers, Liver Complaint, Dyspepsia, Bronchitis, Salt
Rheum, Consumption, Fever Sores, Female Com
plaint®, Erysipelas, Lois of Appetite, Pimples, Biles,
General Debility, &c.
This preparation has now borne the test of over II
years’ experience, since its first introduction to pub
lic favor, during which time numerous imitations
have epiung into existence, founding their claims to
the confidence of the community on the curative
power® contained in Harsapariiia Root, the great re
putation and extended use of which has been mainiy
attributable to the many wonderfui cures effected by
the use of this preparation. While Sarsaparilla Root
forms an important part of its combina’ion, it is, at
the same time, compounded with other vegetable re
medies of gteat power, and it is in the peculiar cem
biuation and scientific manner of its preparation, that
it® remarkable success in the cure o. disease depend*.
Other pt eparation s imitate it in the style of putting
up, and in bearing the name of one of 11s ingredients,
and here ends their resemblance to it. Those need
ing a remedy and purifier like this, ar® requested to
note where this difference exists, and in making
choice of what they will use, not to take any other
bat that one entitled to their confidence, from the
longlist of cures it has effected on living witnesses,
whose testimonials and residences have been publish
ed, and who are still bearing daily testimony to it®
worth. The whole history of medicine has scarcely
furnished a parallel to the numerous and remarkable
cures effected by its ucc, and what it has effected one®
it can effect again.

INFLAMMATORY RHEUMATISM CURED.
Darsstowm, Ky., July 10, 1849..
Messrs. Sands—Gentlemen: It is my doty t® com
municate facts in relation to the beneficial effects of
your Sarsaparilla. My wife was afflicted with inflam
mation and soreness of the stomach of the worst cha
racter; her limbs and chest were much swollen ; she
had constant headache, and last spring was attacked
severely with Inflammatory Rheumatism. The best
medical aid we could obtain afforded only momenta
ry relief; and while in this situation, she heaid of the
many remarkable cures effected by th® use of Sands’
Sa.saparilla and commenced its use, which produced
instant relief, and less than six bottles entirely re
moved all the dropsical swelling and every other in
flammatory symptom, restoring her to perfre- health.

Nkw Orleans, Nov. 12, 1849.
Messrs Sands—Gentlemen: I take the liberty of
sending you a letter which may be of importance to
those who are suffering as I have done. I received
great benefit from your Sarsaparilla, having been
cured of a malady after suffering six years. 1 hereby
cheerfully certify to th® good effect of your medicine,
and I hope God will reward vou for ail the good you
have done. A chronic cough bad tormented me day
and night, and repeated attacks of fever induced me
to believe that I should die with consumption. Ona
dar, while sufferinga violent attack of burning sere-,
a friend persuaded me to try jrcir incomparable medi
cine, but to tell the truth, 1 had ne confidence in it. I
finally purchased a bottle, and by its aee. and the help
of God, I was restored to better health than I hed en
joyed for a x years. I cannot but bles® the author of
this admirable medicine
V\ itu great respect, I am, gentlemen,
Your obedient servant,
FERMIN GROUPAZ.

Messrs. Sands—Gentlemen : My wife suffered with a
distress and burning in her chest for many years, and
my daughter was afflicted from her birth with a hu
mor in her blood We consulted various physicians,
and tried numerous remedies, without much benefit,
until we heard, through Rev. Thomas Davis, of the
great medicinal value of Sands’ Sarsaparilla. On his
recommendation my wife and daughter decided on
trying it, and coon experienced permanent benefit.
My daughter’s skin assumed a new appeaiance entire
ly ; from being rough, hard, and scaly, it became
smooth and soft. My wife’s sufferings are almost
gone, and its use a short time longer, it is my firm be
lief, will produce a perfect cure.
You is, with respect.
