A Grand Regatta or ah Nations. —The
superiority of the Yacht America, over the
English Yach'f, seems to have produced a
very wide sensation in England, and the no
tion—a correct cue doubtless seems gene
rally to prevail, that Americans are greatly
ettperior to the English as ship builders and
sailors Ancfficerof the Riyal navy, how
ever. has taken up the cudgels in behalf of
h : s country men, and, in a letter, afterasaign
ing various reasons for the defeat of the Yacht
sqiadron at Cower, ho proceeds to make a
bo'd propos'tion for test ng the maritime ca
pacities of ail nations He says:
“Is England, the greatest naval po ver the
world ever knaw. to allow heiceif beaten in
her orn element 1 Our security, perhaps our
very existence as a free natiou, depends upon
cur naval superiority. Our pre-cminence es
a commercial people will in fut'ire depend
greatly upon the speed of cur ships. Let
us then challenge the whele world to campete
with us in naval architecture at a grand regatta
of all na'.iora—comprehending men-of-war.
merchant ships, and yachts-in like manner
us we have done this year in arts, sciences and
manufacturer. Let the different k nds cl
vers th be classed, and let every vessel which
enters fur the competition pay a certain sum
of money towards a grand vase for tre win
ning nation (having an appropriate inscrip ion.)
es a national trophy to be placed in i s acade
rry of arts Os co rse there might be. in ad
dion, other prizes. honorary or o herwise,
fur each class. I will venture tossy thatsuch
a grand regatta of all nations would do more
to reprove ship-building in one year iban it
has bten improved, comparatively, for the
last hundred years.”
Our Railroad asd Our Tows. —We took
a ride over the greater portion of the line a
few days ago. and found the work progressing
in handsome a y le. There are rome portions
that require only thr wooden eeperstructnre

and we have never, until we looked upon the
high embankments and deep excavations
