The Character ®r Jc.u* Chrlat.
We fin I in the life of Jeens a anion of qualities,
whioh had nerer beforo met in any being on this
earth. We find embodied in bis example the
highest virtues both es active and ol'contemplative
, life. We sea nnitod in him a devotion touod the
moat intense, abstracted, unearthly, with a benev
olence to man the most active, affectionate and
oniveraal. We see qualities meet aud barmen.ze
iu his character, which are usually tho irht the
most unoonfrenial. We see s force of cltsraclcr
which diOeulsica cannot conquer, an energy which I
aalamity oannos relax, a fortitude and constai cy
which suffering ean neither subdue nor bend tram
their pitrjK)»e; connected with the most melting
tenderness ana aensibility of apirit, tho most ex
quisite eusoej>tibility to every soft and gentle im
pression. W e see in him the rare union of zeal
and moderation, of courage and prudence, of com
passion and firmness; we see superiority to the
world without gioorn or severity, er indifference or
distate to its pursuits and enjoyments. In abort,
there is something in tho whole couoepliou and
tenor of eur Savior’s chsracterao entirely peculiar,
something whioh so rtslizea the ideal model of the
most consummate moral beauty; something so i
lovely, to gracious, so venerable and commanding,
that tht boldest infidels have shrunk from it over- i
awed, and, though their cause is otherwise despe
rate, nave yet feared to profane its perfect purity, j
One of the most eloquent tributes to its sublimity,
that was sver uttered, was extorted from the lips :
of an infidel: “Js there any thing in Liin,” ho ex- '
claims “ of the tone of an enthusiast, of an ambi
tious seotary! What sweetness—what purity in
his manners; what touching grace in his instruc
tions; whst elevation in bis maxims; what pro
found wisdom in bis diacourse; what presence of
mind; what skill and propriety in his answers;
whst empire over his passions! Whe eis the man,
where is the sage, who ka ws how to set, to suffer
end to die, without weakness and without ostonta
Won. When i’lsto paints his imaginary just man,
eoversd with all the ignominy ot crime, and yet
worthy of all ths honora of virtue, hepaints in
every feature the oharsetor of Christ. What pre
judiee, wl.at blindness must possess ns to compare
the son of Boproniacua to the Son of Mary 1 How
vast the distance between them! Socrates, dying
without r>ain and without ignominy, easily sus
tains his character to the last; and, if thin gentle
death had not honored his life, we might have
doubted whether Socrates, with all his genius, was
anything more than a sophist. The death of 80-
orates, philosophizing tranquilly with his friends,
is the most easy that one oould "desire; that of Jc
• * sue, expiring in torfore, ineulted, moulted, ettcra-
Wkys whole people, is the most horrible that one
can fear. Socrates, when he take* the poisoned
cup, blesses him who weeps as he presents it; Je
sus, In the midst of the most dreadful tortures,
pi ays for his infuriated executioners. Yes! if the
life and death of Socrates sr« those of a sage, the
life end death of Jesus are wholly divine.”— Jilt.

The Preaching of Whitfield.
There wee nothing in tho appearance of this ex
traordinary man, which would lead you to aup
posethata Kelix could tremble before him. “ lie
was something above the middle stature, well pro
portioned, and remarkable for a native graceful
ness of manner. His complexion was very fair,
his fasturss regular, and lna dark blue eyes small
and lively : in recovering from Iks measles, ho
had contracted asquint with one of them; but this
peculiarity rather rendered the expression of his
oountensneo mere rememheral.le, than in any do

have seen him when he first commenced, one
would have thought him anything but enthusiastic
and glowing; but, as he "proceeded, his heart
warmed with hit subject, and his manner bccamo
impetnone and animaiod, till, forgetful of every
thing around him, ho seemed to kneel at tho
throne of Jehovah, and to beseech in agony for
his fallow beings.
After ho had finished Ills prayer, ho knelt for a
long time in profound silanes; and so powcrlnily

better qualities of American have been selling.
Considerable attention is now being directed here to a
- consideration of the probable receipts at the American ports
. for the first. thr:e mtnths of the present year, inasmuch as
a very general Impression appears prevail that, should
they during that period so fall off hs to dissipate the prus

The Manchester market, inlluenccd by tho sume causes

,0 The trade, without exception, concur that they have large

it from tho difficulty of procuring freightage, owing to she

, 0 stock in the hands of manufacturers. Th# dealers, how

3 “ somewhat better these article!?. The India
w merchants have dene ratner more in goods the last day or
id two, moved perhaps by th” approach of the mall, which is
jj. telegraphed from Trieste.
,d It was expected that ws should commence the new year
with a degree of buoyancy which is not experienced. The
» realisation of that expectation is interfered with hv more
“ than one cause. Although several well-informed Anacri
y cans are anticipating a large decrease in the receipts of
cotton at the porta of the Union, people on this side arc In-
II fluenced by tko fact of an exc ss of «tofi,Boo hairs over those
it of this time last year, with the probability, according to a
j. telegraphic announcement from New Orleans of December
. fifith, that those figures will bo raised to 450.000 next week.
j The ndvauceof the rate of interest from 2to 2>< cent.
11 by the Bank nf Eng’and, though not looke 1 upon with any
10 thing like uneasiness, is certainly regarded as a precaution
-0 ary measure which merchants may very properly have an
eye to, at a.time when the appreciation «,f corn and other
0 produce may still further derange the foreign exchanges ;
and, in !ee 1, the effect lntt ndeti is already percoptib’e tn a
'' greater haukwardnew to operate on the nnrt of those who
areeugaged in a bl anch of commerce which, like that to
® India and China, Involves tho drawing of long-dated hills.
0 Tho failure of Messrs. Oollman &. StoUcrfoht tends also to
