COMMERCIAL.
Cl I A RLESTON, Dec. 23.— Cotton —There was quite a good
demand for Cotton during the previous week, and the
transactions, which n the aggregate reached 10,QUO bales,
may be ela>sc 1 amdng tffeheaviest of the season. The de
mand was to soma extent Stimulated by accounts from the
West, showing a heavy falling off in the receipts at all the
ports. During the exeujment that preva led prices gradu
ally stiffened, and wo closed our inquiries prepara
tory to our report of the lGthioat., hai advanced an ft®
ftc. The middling qualities at the time were quoted at
NJWZMtfc. and Good Middling 10@1 ftc. The market
opened on Friday last—the first day of the present week—
with a good demand, and during the day upwards of 1500
bales were sold, the above rates forming the basis of opera
tions. On Saturday, however, business may be said to
have been suspended, owing to a ram storm that prevailed
throughout tb day, the salts having been limited to some
20*) bales. The article was very much neglected on
Monday and Tuesday, and the market during these two
days wore a 1 tnguid and drooping apjearance. The stock
was accumulating on Fact *rs bauds in consequence of the
heavy receipts, and some of them anxious to relieve them
selves, were disp sed to sell on easier terms, and a slight
concession wes granted, uhich brought buyers out, and
during Wednesday a good d:mand prevailed, remlting
in the sile of ISoO bales. Yesterday the sitles extended to
S2OO bates. The demand was freely-met by holders, and
the week closed at- ft@ftc. decline pn Good Middling
