Niagara la W later.
Niagara Falls, Jan. 16,1864. -
Niagara is in all its glory. Grand, sublime, im
posing it always is, but now it is] more—it isras
diant with beauty. It not only awes, but it fa- i
cinates; it is not only stupendous, but it is ex- '
quisite. lie who has never seen Niagara in mid- (
whiter has never seen it inaHitaßuperbness The j
summer tourist knows it only in its sternest as- (
pect. Except that rainbow, which ever spans the
“hell of waters,”there is ordinarily notone touch | ’
of beauty about Niagara. Wildness there is, rug- ;
gedness, vastness; yes, aud an overwhelming j
sublimity, a sublimity incomparable. Therein ev- ,
ery other natural curiosity in either hemisphere is ,
tame beside it. The vastest mountains cannot vie j i
with it in effect, for it has, what they cannot have, i
movement; and magnitude in motion is always <
more impressive than magnitude at rest. But this 1
unmatched grandeur is now combind with as
matchless a beauty. The frost has wrought a
fairy work with the grim old cataract. It has ,
thrown about it a garniture that outshines the
wealth of “Ormus or the Ind.” Every rock
glittarß, and every stone, every trunk, every branch
every twigg, every gnarled root, and every with
ered blade of grass. The frozen spray has trans
figured everything. From the edge of the flood
to the foot of the precipice it has sheeted tba
banks with the purest Parian. It has hung the
crags with gleaming icicles. It has encrusted the
trees, both tho leafless and the evergreen, so that
they stand out before you likcehiselled emerald. —
This incrustation is nearly an inch in thickness,
and yet, it marvellously preserves the form of the
tree, underlaying it, even down to the tip ot ’he
smallest twig. Aud so with the tangled bushes
that skirt the brow of the rock ; nothing can be
more fantataic than their luxuriant, snow-white,
involute tracery. The ground, too, entirely free
from snow, whitened over with this same gleaming
coal of frost, is put in keeping with the scene.—
None who did not behold it can imagine the effect
of the clear rays of yesterday’s Betting sun as thev
glanced through the spray which floated off to tm
Canadian side, but burnished witn an unearthly
lustre the landscape teal overhung the roaring
gorge. Verily, I have ecen the flowering time of
Niagara.
There is another winter effect on Niagara which
is worth noticing. The large quantity of ice borne
down from the Lake iB completely pulverized as
it plunges down the abyss. But, though disinte
grated, it is not dissolved, and the river, a short I
distance below, is completely covered with its
floating particles. As it is hurried along much of
it gradually disappears in the turbulent torrent,
but a large portion of it reaches the whirl below
Lewiston, aud there floats about like thick snowy
froth upon the surface It entirely covers the
large ba-in, and presents a most extraordinary ap
t pearance as it is swept about at the varying im
r pulses of a thousand currents and eddies. Till
- one has seen the whirlpool in this state he does
t not half know the conflict of its waters, Every
- movement is made apparent. There is a certain
cohesion in the triturated iee, but it is so slight
i that it readily yields at every impulse of the water
i beneath ; and you rnay see a field of it, perhaps an
acre in extent, siowiy swinging around in one di
rection, while within it, and form a part of it, are
i patches borne along in directions diverse, some
i even turning in. circuits directly opposite. This
i gyrating coating covers the basin, for it is replen
ished above as rapidly as it crumbles off into the
i current below.
There are very few strangers here. Tho large
hotels arc all closed; the curiosity shops arc
locked up; the Indians are hybernutiug; the ferry
boats are in winter quarters, and not even the
Ice-Kir.g Jotum would dare venture behind the
cutaractnow; but still I am bound to say, if you
would see Niagara “ aright,” come and view it ill
January. The “pale moonlight,”ldoubt not, be
• comes Melrose right royally, for all that Sir
IVultcr, who was so profuse in his praise, wus
never there to see; but as for Niagara by win’er,
I can testify yet more positively. Not in longlow
i poetry, but in plain blunt prose; not by faith, but
by sight, I can affirm tliut Niagara’s best days are
the shortcrut days. J. R S.

M ATANZAS, Jar. 20.—. Since our last advices of sth u’.L,
Sugars have come in mere freely; but few sales have been
made of Clayed, which we quote as followsFor Cacuro
9. Throe prees are almost nominal however, at present,
as few transactions have taken place the last week. Os
Muscovado Sugars a crop of about 1500 hhda. has been
soli at rs ;of Inferior color, but good grain; for this
description of Sugar there is soire enquiry.
Molasses has declined to 2# rs., for clayed, scarcity of
vessels has been the principal cause, and may bring about
a farther decline.
Coffee arrives very s’owly from the country, and is eager
ly taken as it cornea in at s9&lo#,the exports will be small,
as most purchases are made for home consumption.
CHARLESTON, Jan. 27.— Cotton—' There was a good
demand for most qualities of thi * article during the two
days preceding the date of our last publication, and the
transactions w re characterized by a considerable degree
of firtnnessin prices at 9(&9#c. for the Middling to Good
Middling, and for the Middling Fair qualities.
The demand, however, in a great degree, seemed to have
cl< sed with the week, as the operations of Friday last—the
fi'St day of the present week—were limited to some 12C0
bales, but so far as prices were concerned, the position of
the matket had in no wise changed. A considerable de
gree of activity pervaded the market on Saturday and
Mon .ay, resulting in the sale cf over 4000 bales during the
two days, and at the close of transactions on the latter day,
there was a decided stringency in prices; but the tenor of
the advices by the steamer Niagara, which reached us on
Tuesday, threw a damper upon the market, and for a mo
nunt, materially checked operations—salts only about 1000
bales. The demand revived c n Wednesday, which was, no
doubt, stimulated by the increase in the tonnage, and quite
an active business engaged the attention of dealers, until
a Ute hour, when it was ascertained that the operations
had reached the large amount of 8900 bales. No decided
change was reported in favor of sellers, but it was qui e
apparent during the day that the tendency was in their
favor. Yesterday the sales reuched 8100 bales, and the
market fully sustained its position. The sales since our
last c mprise 12,540 bale), against the receipts in the same
time of 12,911 bales. In comparing our quotations of the
previous week with prices recently paid, we find that some
qualities have advanced a full >4c.; and we have accord
ingly altered our quotation sto correspond with this im
provement. The transactions are as foliows, viz : 838
bales at 8>»; 629 at&*; 209 at 81000 at

ary to Good Ordinary Middling to Good Middling
; Middling Fair 10> g <§>10#; and Fair 10#c.
The market f>r all descriptions of Long Cotton continues
quiet, although the aggregate amount sold, rather exceeds
the transactions ( f the previous week. Holders have net
been to make much progress at the decline of 2<&8«.
reported in our last, and have been unwilling to meet pur
chasers at a gi eater concession, hence the comparatively
limited sales. We renew the quotations given in our re
port of the 20th inst., but in the present unsettled state of
the maiket, they must, to a great extent.be considered
nominal. We quote Florida?, according to cleanneßsand
fineness. 2"<&29c. Santee*, Mains and Middling Sea Islands
from 3*'@,400.; and very Fine and Extra, 45<&,55c. and
upwards, as in quality.

range of s3#(&4. We quote Ordinary to Fair sß#@B%;

NOTICE TO COTTON PLANTERS.
IMPiIOVED COTTON GlN*.—Thesubseriberwould
intorm the Planters of Get* via and the adjacent States,
that he continues to manufaetcre COTTON GINS of a supe
rior quality, at his factory thr ,* miles east of the city of
Macon,on the Central Railrotd. Having, within the last
year, enlarged his Factory an(. made great additions to his
machinery, and having the ve*-y best of workmen, he is now
prepared to supply the country with Gins unsurpassed (in
any respect) by any made in the United States. The sub
scriber would not speak disparagingly ofany Gin Factory
in tli-‘State; yet he thinks it no presumption to say that
his Gins are more universally approved than those from
any factory. Every Gin sent from his factory within the
las year has given entire satisfaction; he has not heard
th; first complaint, but has been informed by many, tb»
fc’f Gins are superior in every respect to any they have
ever seen in use; and in all probability, there n> no other
factory in the Btat< that has*met with such success. He
attributes the tine performar.ee of his Gins to the personal
attention which they receive from liim in their construc
tion. Every Gin that leaves bis factory, is closely inspect
ed by him during the time of Its building and afterwards.
He has never desired, neither does he ever intend to, build
more Gins than he can properly see to himself. Therefore,
all those who purchase Gins of him, may with confidence
expect a good one, for he assures the public that no other
kind shall leave hi? shop, as his undivided attention will in
future be given to the building of Gins.
As an evidence of their superior quality, he refers the
public not only to his numer «u» patrons, hut' also to t?:e
premium list of the last Agricultural Fa»r of the State ol
Georgia, where it will be sees he took the premium over al
his competitors,(some of whom wer*. quite formidable,)
and injustice to them he would say they exhibited speci
mens of work hard to beat. And as still further evidence
of the character of his gins, lie Would st ate that the Com
mittee appointed to award the premium after the exami
nation made by them, each purchased a gin from him be
fore they left the ground. And notwithstanding the late
ness of the season, his gins were so much liked by people
visiting the Fair, that he sold twenty during the week. He
is well prepared to try all his gins before they leave the fac
tory ; but he deems it unnecessary from tne fact that all
his gins are made alike. De does not build a poor gin for
one man and a good one for another. But he willtry ali
gins when requested to do so.
Contracts can be made with my traveling agent?, or by
letter addressed to me at Macon, Georgia. Ali orders will
receive prompt attention. o. W. MASSET.

they ever failed to protect valuables from fire, whereas
other makers’Safes have proved utterly worthless in va

have occurred recently. Read the following from Messrs.

Medicines, Ac.:
Albany, July 27,1852.
This is to certify, that on the 23d of July, 1652, our en •
tire stock, composed of Turpentine, Alcohol, Oil, Paints,
Medicines, Ac., was consumed by lire; so rapid and severe
was the fire, that we were unable to close our Safe, until
Mr. Pohlman subsequently entered at the peril of his life,
and closed the doers. On forcing the safe open, alter all
this exposure to the lire, which made us fearful for the
safety of its contents, its valuables were found uninjured 1
We have so much confidence in the security of the Fire-
King, that we shall immediately replace it by another.
