banded to lutn must have been the 18th of Janua

jsci.tuK-iit with which the event was coupled must
tuai lto increase his annoyance. It appears that
t! a- oCI .oil had been B-ved up as the dale of the

a. will have been learned by the last packet, was
pos-p ine l, or rather changed, by the Russians
hen IT previously compelled to fall back irom the
j,. -\ 1 . .rb "d of dial river as fast as possible, after
a I ..I four cannon and 4,'j00 men in kdlsd and

In the lace of those circumstances, with the en- 1

conveyance of arms and stores to Batoum InTurk
isii ves- Is under their protection, and the des
pa'ch of a Uritishsteamer to Hehastopol to demand
the m a-- of certain English engineers, captured
from a Turkish steamer, and also to notify the Kus

vo vis, a most all persons are now looking upon
hasduties as having virtually commenced and ure
antici) ating the miniodiate depsrtaro of the Rus

Nevertheless, there are some who yet entertain
the conviction tbetthe Czar will hesitate to aocept
even all these things as necessitating that fie
should retort with an open duHanee. ‘-With the
exception of his stnltire of six feet four,” they say,
“there is nothing hut meanness and cowardioe in
h's comp- dtion.” To support this view they
point to ni» attack on tho Hungarians just at the

tenacity with which he insists upon dealing with
Turkey “alone." (Such nman, it is affirmed, will

Tho public arc still without tho details of the

that tho sin -ess of the Turks wnsnot over stated,
and that alter three days of hurd lighting tho Ros

on " e lull of January, to abandon every hope ol
attacking tho Turks according to the Emperor’s
orders at K ilulat on the 18th, and lor winch du
ring many previous weeks all their preparations
had been maturing ...
With regard to the progress of hostilities in
Asia, there H also an absence of any fmtherin
furmPion. Among minor occurrences lately nar
rated is an instance of determination on tho part
of a Turkish sailor which has inflicted great mor
tiflestkin on Vbo Russians s' Sebastopol. Some
time before the buttle of Sinope they captured a
Turlti Ii sb line r in the Itluck Hca, and a week or
two ago, while tills prize was lying at Sebastopol,
out of the seamen who lnid been taken in hor,
contrived to get Into the hold und to create a leak
which caused her to founder with everything she
hud on board.
Other annoyances sustained by Russia have boeu
brought to light in the fact lliut ilio Duchess of
O-leuns has, as it was anticipated would be tho
case, repudiated tho recent fusion betwcon the
legitimists and the sons of Louis I'hilippe, and in
the wavering conduct id Austria, whose perplexi
ties at the danger of hor position in offending
Kinds on the one hand, or being its victim on the
oilier, uro becoming very manifest. It is said that

On tho 9ih, the Turks having remained over
night on the field beyond Citalo, attacked tho ro

Krnj iva with the loss of cannon and immense
slau liter on both sides. On tho 10th tho Turks

Kalafat. The Turks wore oonunondod In this ac

The ah n o victories wero otlicially announced to

It was at first intruded t<> semi a portiou of the

current th at tluwho o ot the Russian fleol had sail

Kussl n ships cf-war wore oif Errerouin, probaMv
expecting to intercept the Turkish convoys, (which
was under the protection of the allies,) carrying

On the receipt of this at Vienna, the English,

The Porte's demand Is that tho note shall bode

TUE OLD CUUECU.
Nsy, doom not yet that dear old pile,
My Infar.t steps have troi ;
A mother led to*- through ita aisle
To learn the w*y to God.
Ah! tear not down that time worn aeat,
Where by her aide w.*s caught
Ere yet my lip* could vow repeat,
The gem of pious thought.
Nay, cast not forth to common air
The sacred breath within,
Too deep Imbued with holy prayer
To mi ogle now with sin.
Oh ! let not Christian deed be found
By reckless pride inspired,
To r«nk with his of old unowned
For Fagan temple fired.
Or modern hands, with Cromwell rage
'Gainst ancient relics bent,
Blot from oar city’s Christian page,
God’s earliest monument.
Spare yet,oh, spars the old church bell,
While hearts are left which feel,
Fad warnings in its solemn knell,
Sweet menior.es in its peal.
Ob I spare—till one who’s fate may fill
An exile's grave at last,
Can come no more, when these are still,
To mourn their influence past.
Pause till such hearts in silence rest,
Then hurl the old bell down,
That modern ease, too long oppressed,
A neighboring chime may own.
Tarry, at least a few brief years,
That then no hearts may bleed,
No by-gone race with fruitless tears
Deplore the ruthless deed.
Tarry awhile, that dta’h may hush
The lingering wish to save ;
And earth conceal the indignant blush
That kindles in the grave.
Then let the Old Church meet its lot,
Approved by Fashion's nod ;
That prior may dear crate the spot
Our fathers gave to God.

LITKttPOOL, Jan. 20.—Great uneasiness continues to
exist on the subject of the Eastern Question, and it seems
now almost impossibi *to avoid war. This, with the great

Cottou, and creat-d an anxiety among importers to place
the late arrivals on the market as soon as landed, thereby
giving buyers an advantage of & iu the middling and
better cl ssesof American.
The sales for the week are estimated at 45.100 bales.

NOTICE TO COTTON PLANTERS. "
IMPROVED COTTON til AH.—The subscriber would
inform the Planters of Georgia and the adjacent State*,
that he continues to manufacture COTTON GINB of a supe
rior quality, at his factory three miles east of the city of
Macon,on the Central Railroad. Having, within the last
year, enlarged liis Factory and made great additions to his
machinery, and having the very best of workmen, he is now
prepared to supply the country with Gins unsurpassed (la
any respect) by any made in the United States. The sub
scriber would not speak disparagingly of any Gin Factory
in the State; yet he thinks It no presumption to say that
his Gins are more universally approved than those from
any factory. Every Gin sent from hia factory within the
las' year has given entire satisfaction; he has not heard
the first complaint, but has been informed by many, the
hG Gins are superior in every respect to any they bav*
ever seen in use; and in all probability. thor» ( g D 0 other
factory in the Stat-that ha* met with such success. Ue
attributes the tine performance of his Gins to the personal
attention which they receive from him in their construc
tion. Every Gin that leaves hia factory, is closely inspect
ed by him during the time of its building and afterwards.
He has never desired, neither does he ever intend to, build
more Glds than he can properly see to himself. Therefore,
all those who purchase Gins of him, may with confidence
expect a good one, for he assures the public that no other
kind shall leave his shop, as bis undivided attention will in
future be given to the building of Gina.
As an evidence of their superior quality, he refers the
public not only to his numerous patrons, but also to the
premium list of the last Agricultural Fair of the Btaie of
Georgia, where it will be seen he took the premium over all
his competitors,(some of whom were quite formidable.)
and injustice to them he would say they exhibited speci
mens of work hard to beat. And as still further evidence
of the character of his gins, he would state that the Com
mittee appointed to award the premium afier the exami
nation made by them, each purchased a gin from him be
fore they left the ground. And notwithstanding the late
ness of the season, his gins were so much liked by people
visiting the Fair, that he sold twenty during the week. He
is well prepared to try all his gins before they leave the fac
tory ; but he deems it unnecessary from the fact that all
his gins are made alike. He does not build a poor gin for
one man and a good one for another. But he will try all
gins when requested to do so.
Contracts can be made with my traveling agents, or by
letter addressed to me at Macon, Georgia. All orders will
receive prompt attention. 0. W. MASSEY.
