for his rebellion is, that the troops now marching
towards Acapulco, ostensibly for tiro defence of
that oily against Walker, have in reality been sent
to combat bitu and kis followers; end that they
have orders to assassinate him and all his adhe

New York Bay, Monday, March 12,1654. J
Mb. Editob:—Tho Bte*m.-hip Brother Jona

ing of February lttii, aud after an exceedingly
pioaaant pasaagt suchored in the harbor ot Ban
Juan del Bud early on tbe morning of the let in
slant. These* was unusually rough, a gale of
wind having been blowing for several days. The
greater portion ol the day was consequently con
sumed in landing the paaeengurs end freight.
There were nearly 8 u passenger- on board, about
4, Si ol wboai were in the steerage, composed p iu-
Cipallv of the roughest portion of tho population
otOaiiforma. The proce-a of landing, rlwaya no-
Cceaarily rlow, v»a* grea ly reUrded by the obeli
uucy and dog .u the manger dirpoeiiton of tbeee
people. As soon as the ship reached her moor
ing,, they took posaeeaion of the gangway leading
to the boats, trorn which the officers were unable
to remove them. Imagining that some peculiar
advantage, in the cboiooof muie* especially—was
to be dur.vcd Irom beiog first ou shore, they bad
determined to avail themselves of that advantage.
It is the custom of toe Steamship Company to
land their passengers freo of charge in their own
boats, but the mnabiianle also bring extra boats
along-ide to facilitate tbe landing, in which they
charge passengers a moderate pnoe. Tiiese boats,
iLe steerage paraengers would uolemploy, neither
would they suffer others who were thus disposed
lo do ao, but ralner insulted and abused them for
making tbe attempt. Many of the paaagngers,
theret ire, in the cabin, had Dot lauded from the
ship when mostof those in tho steerage reached
! Virgin Bay, the trunait acroes the couu'ry oc.upy
ing abool two hours, litre two steamers, the Cen
tral America aud Ume.epe were waniug. It was
nameoiaiely announced that the former would
sail in tbe evening, and that tho latter won.d be i
retained until ahe caoin pabaongerb with their bag- j
gage, the specie and express matter should arrive.
Another diffiouity at once arose.
The steerage passengers became impressed with
the idea ‘.bey were about to bo imposed upon—that
the Cibiu passengers w re to tare bolter tban
themselves —in a word, that something was to be
gained by waiting for the Ouietopo, and hence,
neither threats nor entreaties oould induce them
to embark in the Central America, the largest and
beat boat of the two. Tho agents endeavored by
all possible means bo induce them to goou board,
but ail of tbeir efforts were unavailing. Tne
steamer sailed with 200 pasaeDgers, leaving 400,
with tbe specie, freight ahd baggage fur the
Umetepe. The consequence of this lolly and per
versity will be seen, proved moet lamentably die
aatroua. Boon alter the sailing of the Cen'ra)
America, the wind, which had been blowing fresh
all day, increased until it swept a perfect tempest
aorusa the hake, and the Ooietepe waa forced to
take ratoge under tbe lee of the mountain, op
posite the village, during the night.
Beior* noon the next moruiug, she again made
her appearance, and anchored some Kuu or 4ob
yarda lrom the pier. The soa was exceedingly
rough, and tbe surl rolled in upon the beach with
tremendous fury. The steamer had lost her boat,
and some time elapsed before it was recovered,
after which mnch difficulty was experienced in
getting a line lo tho shore. Tnis accomplished,
the process ol embarkation cotnmehced. This
was effected by means ot' a large uir-ctambercd
iron launch, capable of containing comfortably 50
or 80 persou*. Three muds, with groat care, wero
successfully landed on hoard the steamer ; but on
loading the four.b lime, the man having the ooat
in obulge exhibited great impatience—provoked,
no doubt, by the obstinacy winch be had encoun
tered the previous night, and fearing he would
be unable lo finish his work wuile tho day-light
laslo, —and persisted in crowding her more Ilian
prudence und bound judgment could justify, and
she was pushed from tue pier with more tnan 8o
persons on board. As she slowly proceeded, it
heoauio apparent to all on bhoie that bhe was in
extreme peril, end nor progress wus watched with
paiutul uux.ety. Aa wave after wave struck her,
she was seen to sink lower in the water, until at
length, when about 100 yards distant, the whole
column of a heavy sea rolicl over her entire leugth,
filling her to the gunwales.
A ncroam ot horror eusned which beggars all
description. Cries of terror simu taneouJy arose
from tbo tbe launoh and ilio -.uudreds of specta
tors Upon the steamer and on shore. Tbe aoa was
instantly covered with flouting objects, among
which wero distinguished many human forme that
had been washed from tbo boat, or had thrown
IhemaeUos overboard in the first moment olalurm.
Borne wore battling manlulty with the waves ;
i thers yielding themselves at once to despair, were
sinking without an apparent effort at safety—their
hands as if in supplication, ruined above their
head*, wtiilo in the midst of ail was tho lauuch,
halt filled with human beings, clinging with si
meet Uopeless agony to eaon other. The crowd
upon the steamer, unable to render assistance,
looked on with horror. The people un shore were
lohs constroiu.d. Hero women stood in clusters
and wild u'artn, and men ran to and fro, some
giving orders, outers cursing and swearing, and
lew knowing either whut tiny did or said. The
cooler headed, however, rushed towards the mis
erable apologies for boats that lay ulung shore, und
endeavored to gel them afloat.
But the natives were the first to discover tho full
extent of tho dauger aud render efficient aid.
With one wild shriek, and an impulse that would
have done credit to the best ol mankind, they
loro uff their scanty garments and rushed to tho
relief of the sutfirern—the women being the first
in tho benevolent and dangerous work. They
hesitated not to zsouul the cast, or calculate the
danger, but dashed uto the lurioua surf, heedless
of everything but to save their fellow creuturos
from death, and these strangers of another race,
between whom aud themselves there has been lo
sympathy aud but little kindly loeling. Brighter
examples of true Loroism could not bo imagined
ibun wero exhibited by thw>a rude aud iguuraut
people. A dozen native women rushed to a large
nungo that laid nigh and dry upon the bcueli, und
dragging it to thu waves, pushed it with almost in
credible speed through the water towards thu
launch. As they approaohod this, oue of the wo
mou aprang forward, tearing a halt dead child from
the arms of its drowning mother, held It with one
hand above her bead, and swum with her precious
charge lo ILo shore. Others buceuuod in saving
tho mother. Other oases of like oliumcter occur
red, ouenutivo man lost his life in his generous
efforts to save others.
Some ot tho pu-sengers clung to the laanoh until
she wits drawn ashore; others swain sately to the
beach, while still others sank exhausted beneath
the waves. It is impossible, as yet, to determine
how many perished. In less than an hour utter the
disaster occurred, eix'.aen dead bodies wero upon
tho beaoli, some dragged ashore by the natives,
others washed in with the surf. Beverul others
were subsequently found, and übout hail a dozen
more were known to bo misuiug. Fftty-one of
those in the launch wore saved. The first body re
covered wus that of a woman, upon whoso cloth
ing were fouud large sums of gold. Her busbuad
was also drowned, who also curried a thousand of
dollars, the woight ot which, perhaps, aided in
ouusil.'g their deaths. One man had upon him an
inflated lifo presetvor, but beneath it sub a boil ol
gold sufficiently heavy to weigh him down. The
persons of most of the drowded contained more
or less gold. It was not, tlioreioro, necessity that
made tnem steerage pussengars.
On tho ulleruoou of Sunday, March sth, the pas
sengers of the Brother Joimtimu arrived from Ban
Juau del Norte, about 160 of whom sailed the same
day for New Orleaua in the stoamship Daniel
Webster, the romainderin the Star of the West
for New York. This latter is oue of the finest
ocean steamers afloat. Her accommodations are
admirable in overy respect, while without au ex
ception, hor officers are experienced, and attentive
tu their duliiß. Tho passage irom Ban Juan, has
occupied eight days, aud oi.o more agreeable oould
neither have boon expected or desirod.
