sia has already come to an understanding with
those States and Au.tria. The King is strongly
impressed with the necessity of endeavoring to
preserve Germany from tho e-ilatnil ies of war, and
to stand by those States whose territories are more
exposed to attack than those of Prussia. Prussia
will preserve an independent altitude, and will
resist every attempt that may lie made to influ
ence her conduct, come from what quarter it may.
The strength and tho sword of Germany will ouly
bo employed to defend German interests.”

Sweden.—No agreement with Rnssia for the re
cognition of Swedish neutrality, in the lorm pro

Swede is delighted at it. Gothland will be now
garrisoned by 10,000 men, iu addition to which two
entrenched camps—one to the northof Stockholm,

Gheeck— The news trom Greece is still unfa
vorable and a subject of some annoyance to the
Turkish gov irnment. A serious encounter oc
eurred at Artn between tho i urltish force and the
rebels in which the latter were completely routed,
with a loss of a hundred and fifty killed, and great
numbers wounded Fuad Eifendi has been named
commissary-general utJunina and started throe
days ago with the re inlorcements sent by govern
ment. in that direction.
Vienna, Marcli 23 —According to private ad
vices oi the 18:h from Epirus, the insurrection is
not spreading, but u private dospatch in the O st
Correspondez says that Su i and nearly all the
aonthenn maritime districts of Albania have risen.
The insurrection extends from ono end of the
Pindus mountains to the othor. Tsavellas is pro
claimed commander in-chief of the insurgent army.
Advices direct from Albania and Thessaly show
that tho Sultan’s troops are retaking o l tho posi

wero seized by tbo insurgents. Besides the 6000
Turkish troops landed at Volo, 25- a) have been dis

An Interesting Cate.
A onse of oonaiilerahle interest is now in conrso

the carpet bag contained a large amount of gold,
waited upon the gentleman and demanded pay
ment of freight. The regular price of freight on

Tho passenger refused to pay the freight, on the
ground, we understand, that even if it did contain
gold, (which hodid not admit) having brought it in
the passenger car as baggage, and a-sumed tbe
responsibility of ita loa‘ himself, the Road was not
entitled to tho prico of freight ohafged for the
transportation of gold. Moreover, he denied tho
righlof tho officers of the Road to know the con
tents of his carpet bag. As there is a special rate
for tho transportation of specie, it was necessary

be known, before the exact amount of the charge
for freight could be determined. Under the law

CHARLESTON, April 14.— Cotton— This artice was
very much neglected for several days preceding the date of
our last publication, and the market, whietftiad been in a
languid and dr< oping condition, settled down at a decided
decline of ou the arrival of the BalUc. The mid
dle g qualities at the time were valued at The
market at vhe opening cf the present week presented no
new features, as the sales of Friday were limited to about
800 bales, at corresponding prices On Saturday, howev* r,
t peratioDs msy be said t»have been su*pendid. as only
2)0 bales were sold at ncminal rates. Thus stood the po
sition cf affairs when the mirket ooemd on Monday wi«h
the Europa’s advices at band, showing a decline ta the
other side. The sales of Tuesday were rather large than
otherwise, t ie transactions having reached nearly 1600
bales, establishing a farther reduction of on our
previous currency. On Wednesday the dejaaud fell off, as
the sales were limited to about 500 bales, at pi ices similar
to those paid on the previous day. Yesterday 1200 bales
were reported to have been sol J, «nd the market closed in
rather an unsettled state, at about the above rcduetiin.—
We have altered our quotations accordingly, to which we
woul I with confidence refer, as approximating as nearly as
possible to the true position cf the market at the dote of
