Q, lite a largo number of strangers have been in
Cass villi? during this week ia attendance upon the
Commencement exorc.soa of the Oassville Female
College—giving the town a lively and animated
•ppearanco.
The Commencement Sermon was preashedin
tho College Chapel on Sunday morning, at half
past lo o’clock, by the Kev. Lovick Pieroe, D. I>.,
from Gen. ii, 2$ : “A d A lam said, This is now
bone of my bone, and flesh of my llesli ; she shall
be callod Woman, because sh* wan taken out of
man.” From this rather singular text, the rever
end doctor preached a sermon of much power, in
which he insisted on Woman's entire equality to
tnau. This position ha supported with arguments
possessing a good deni of force anil originality,
though in some instance a, we thought, ho was
more specious than profound. The latter part of
h>s sermon, which was devoted principally to the
subject of Fetna'e K location, was conceived in the
speaker’s happiest s vie, and should have been
heard by every friend of eduoation iu Georgia. In
a word, tho entire discourse was of a high charao
ter, and will bo Jong remembered by those who
heard it.
The examination of the different classes occupied
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The examination was conducted with great fair
ness, and the young ladies, almost without excep
tion, diil themselves and the institution great
credit. We oatmol refrain from mentioning, par
ticularly, tho examination of the Junior Class in
Avideuces ot Christianity, French and Plaue

French and Natural Philosophy, of the Freshman
Class iu Fug;ish Grammar and Algebra, and cf

evinced by their attention and good order through
out, the great interest they foitin the examination.

IJut this is not all. There was an old charter
existing in Texas, creating the Company called the

Company having orgau’zsd, not being able to sell

that thero were tweDty millions. They immedi

when Mr. Chutfiold came to c'ose his purchase,
they required him to pay *IOO,OOO for their bhare
of the stock. This was the single advantage ob

AJI the rest, wo consider, displays the moat extra
ordinary infatuation on the part of me people of
Texas, to say nothing ot the responsibility incurred
by the leading managers in thin affair, who repre

to protect it. .......
The Moonshine Company obtained the addi

Kky. Dit. Stilxs, and His Mission. —Some time
past, l)r. Stilee, through tho Booth, as
agent of tho American Home Missionary Society,
who*o object was said to be the spread of the Gos
pol among Southern heathen of both European and
African origin 1 This agent, we believe, was hero
and at Columbus, Montgomery, &w., preaching,
and collecting funds in uid ot his mission. On
his return to Connecticut, he made a report to the
“General Association of Connecticut,” which re
suited in the following Resolution being adopt
ed :
Resolvedy “That while we have heard tho state
ment of Dr. Stiles with much interest and high
respect for himself, and with a desire to co-oper
ate with all that wo deem wise efforts to extend
the Gospel of Christ, yet that this body regard
tho American Home Missionary Society correct iu
its position not to grant aid to slaveholding mis
sionaries.”
After this we hope that the Southern Churches
and people will allow this abolition “American
Home Missionary Society,” to take care of the
Gospel wants of their own heathen, north of Ma
son's A Dixon’s line. Such hypocrites should nev
er have boon permitted to interfere with the dn

Relic or an Explosion.— On yesterday the
Dredge Boat of Mr. Baldwin, at work on the Gar
den Banks, in the river just above Wiitiofc’s ship
yard, about two hundred feet from the wharf,
brought out a steamboat boiler, measuring some
fifteen leet in length, it was secured, placed on a
fiat boat and conveyed to the shore, whero it fi
nally proved too much of a load for th* hn«t, and
all went to the bottom together. As the water,
however, is not deep, it will require very little
troublo to raise it agaiu. It will be placed on the
wharf to day, wboro it may be inspected. Capt.
