prepared to ray that they were the consequences
oul» of the incenotary appeals, lor some Ume past,
njh'icly m-de to our foreign populauon by some
of the l.aders of tt e Anti American par y, or that
rj e y w* re instigated by direct iaatructions of
Oreu e.ith fiendish hearts who control in a great
measure the paesions, and are aole to cictaie ac
lOßtf to tne Germans and Irish who made the*©
attacks. A 1 the lacta win probably be ascertained
iadi Tally, and tbeu tbe ret-ponsibility will rest
wn-ire it properly belongs. The circumstances as
detailed to us, and tbe confessions of some of t e
inferable wretches who were r ade the victims of
Uudr insane foiiy and murderous violence, show
that these a-sauits upon unoflending aLd inno
cent native-born citizens were premeditated, and
that the n ame attaches to others who are as yet
unnamed. . . _
\\ e n*ve not time to give de.ails. v\ e assert
however, and are sur that it will be proved by
respectable witnea-.es, that every act ol bloodshe i
wofi begun by foreigners. That in every instauce
wnorc mortal violence ensued, the beginning of
the riots wm an unprovoked slaughter by foreign
ers of i ot'ceaole Americans while quiet y passing
in the streets at a distance from the polls. This
if fur.ated the populace, and a prompt and terrible
resort to rnon violet ct oy which many foreigners
wore killed and much properly destroyed was the
consequenco. In the first ward about 9 o’clock ia
the mjrning, while the election was proceeding
quiet y at the poll-, Mr. Geo. Burge, a respectable,
and quiet American citizen was brutally assaulted
by a par y of Irishmen on Jackson S.reet, between
J oil r. on and Greene, without having given any
nroviCition, he was knocked down andhoiribly
beaten with stones and clubs. He attempted to
ej-c-po from tt;e fiends by wi.cra ,be was aiucked
and ran into the alley of an adjoining where
he was followed by his bleed tbiisty assailants,
and cut, stabbed, and beaten until ho wa* suppos
ed to bo deud, when one of these inhuman brute*
delibera eiy opened his knife and proceeded to
cut the throat of the murdered man. When this
tet of violence wan made known a party of Ameri
cans started in purtuit of the murderers, who
wore lly arrested and lodged in jail by
toe Mayor a;.d City Marshall.
In the as ernoon between three and four o clock
reverb Americans wore fired upon and severely
wounded while quietly riding or walking by the
G .rman brewrey on Jefferson street, near the Bear
grabs bri ige. Amoi g these were some gentlemen
from Jefferson county and several respectable cit
izens. One gentleman who was fired at was riding
in a buggy with hi« wite seated by his side. About
the same lime a period shower of bullets that and
ore rained upon every American paeser by from
:h© windows of someheuses occupied by Gormans
Siielby street in the neighborhood of Madi
son btroct.
A.i boon as these occurrences were made known
it was ascerteined that largo bodies of foreigners,
a/mod wuh bhol guns and rfics, bud assembled
u the neighborhood of the brewery and also on
rt.ioi y street. An indiscriminate slaughter of
Ameaican Cil zens was apprehended. An immense
crowd oi excited, maddened, infuriated Amer
icans assembled, they were fi. r od at from the
windows of the brew/ey and the houses on Shelby
streetj.and in seeking to arrostjthose offenders sc ver
m! men were bud'y wounded and the incensed and
infuriated mob burned the brewery and sacked
the hou-Crt from which the shots wore fired.
Iu the Bth ward, the most serious disturbance
occurred about 6 o’clock in tbo i fiernoon. A Mr.
Kbodos, in company with two friouds, all Ameri
can ci izous, was quietly passing upon Main street,
near Chapel, when they were set upon by a party
often Irishmen, who with horrible oaths swore
they would clean the streets of every American.
Fifteen shot wore fired upon them. Rhodes was
killed, and both his communions badly wounded,
one ot them boriously. The Irishmen then ran up
( bepet street, and on being pursued took ref'go
in a house at the corner of Chapel and Market
-troettq whence several shots woe fl:ed by the in
mates, by which several American citizens were
wound <l and two worn killed, u Mr. Graham and
and a Mr. Hobson. The firing from this house
continued for some half hour. The Irish were
armed to the teeth with fire arms of every descrip
tion, while the Americans wore almost entirely
unarmed, and were oh iged to got to their homes
to procure arms to defend themselves end their
friends from the murderous lire of the insano
wrotches who had made this attack upon them. Be
tween 0 and 7 o’clock, a sullio ent forco had assem
bled to capture the murdero r of young Graham; an
attempt was made to hang him, but we loam that
he iH still living.
In the meantime a fusilade of shotguns and
rifios wus kept up against auy American passing
by the row of houses at the corner of Eleventh and
\luin, hehmg ng to un Irishman named Quinn, a
brother of Father Quinn, a Boman Catolic priest,
covoral Americans wero w( unded by shots fi ed
from these premises, and tho attention of the
crowd was given to them. They wore filled with
Irishmen, and with loaded arms as tho sequel
proved beyond a doubt. An attempt was made to
drive them out, and tho houses wero fired, wheth
er on tho inside or outside wo do not know. W hile
burning, tho frequent report* showed that they
wore well provided with tiro am s; and the con
tossiousot a poor m.sorablo devil who was rescued
by Capt. Stone proves that they wero filled with
arms and contained thirteen kegs of powder pro
vided ror tho occasion. The houses are still burn'
iug, as wo write, and the riot is not yet subsided.
Wo have neither space nor time to enter into
auy particulars. We will attempt to do so to
morrow. A number of Americans w re slaiu by
the foreighers and a number of foreigners met a
heavy retribution. We do not know row many
have been killed, but have already heard of eomo
twelve or fifteen iu all, and some twelve or thirty
have been more or lews dangerously wounded.—
We will givo details to-morrow.
Who is Responsible sub the Riot.—This is a
question winch must be uuswored. There is a ter
nblo responsibility somowhero and tho proper
parties, lot them be may who they may, must bear
it. One thing at least is now known. The fo
reigners in this city, more especially the Catholic
Irish, from some cause and at some instigation,
wero armed to the teeth, and used their arms,
from houses behind barriers, and fiom their
skulking place* have tint down remorselessly,
u- ffending citizens as tkiy passed in tho streets.
Os tho terrible ihe hori bla consequences of these
assaults we have not the heart to speak. It will
bo the duty, and tho duty must he steru T y per
foimed, of tho Coroner to thoioughly investigate
tho fuels and when tho inquest is made wo shall
have no more to say.
Tiik Election.—There is groat excitement. A
number of list-lights have occurred, but with the
exception oi one tffair and the accidental discharge
cf a pistol, by which a man and a boy were woun
ded. No srrious harm has been done.
On Hancock street, a man named C4eo. Birch or
B.trk : was attacked by a uumbor of Irishmen and
was dangerously injured. Ilia feared that his
skull i« broken. She Irishman who inflicted the
blow was arrested.
In the Third ward a man named Henry Glass
attnokcd a Germm liuow Nothing, iu whioh the
former was worsted.
At tho court house several fights have occurred
at d during one of them, Bat. Tansey,an Irishman
U 'ape<l from the door in tho second story of the
west end to tno pnvoment below without saßtuiu
in any injury.
Tho police in the flightn ward have been very
cfll Jieut and but very lew slight disturbances. A
\ ry serirusaooldentcocarred there about 1 o’clock.
A man who is a wutvhmau in the Nashville rail
road depot, was shewing a pistol to James Jones,
a driver for Mr. Graham, lumber merchant, whou
it went off, the ball entering the groin of Jones
an parsing through him and also entering the
groin of a boy about nine years ot ege, named
Henry Young, who was standing immediately be
hind Jones. Young was taken to Dr. OriflUhs’s
«. fflee. His wound ia not u ortul, but very pain
ful. There is but little it any chance for Jonea’s
recovery. His wound bv Dr. Brewer.

Pierce ao4 Reeder—Carious Story.
The Washington correspondent of the New
York Tribune, who ia generally pretty well posted
in Washington affairs, tells the following singular
story in relation to the efforts of the President to
buy off Reez>eb, for iear of giving effmee to his
Freesoii friends and supporters. We give the
story for what it is worth and should not be sur
prised to find it true to the letter.
Correspondent of the New York Tribune.
Washington, August 5, 1855.
Many important facts have been transpired with
re?6ranee to tko dismissal of Gov. Reeder, but
there are one or two more, of whose authenticity
I can give you the most positive assurances, which
yet require to be Drought to the notice of an ad
miring world.
No sooner had the Govejnor communicated
with Mr. Pierce, alter he had arrived in the
Ea-tiern States from Kansas, tnan the President
beFOuirbt him to resigD.in order to relative tbe
chiet Magisirate of tl e Union from the embarrass
meutin which he found himself. Byway of
inducement, the President proposed to confer on
Governor Reader the appointment of Commis
sioner to China, then vacant by the return of Mr.
McLane. This tbe Governor promptly disclined.
This proffer haviDg thus proved insufficient, the
President made a higher bid. He now said that on
conditoin of Reeder’s vacating the Governorship in
Kansas, he would give him the place of ambassa
dor to England, trom which Mr. Buchanan was
soon to return. Ti e splendor thia of proposition
was a matter to consider, and aft or two days tbe
Governor gave his ultimatum. He offered to resign
if the President would write him a letter asking
him to do so, and publish it in the Uniont ogether
with his reply, it oemg understood that the appoint
meEt to England should be gazetted immediately
after. The President refused to publish such a
correspondence, and the Governor accordingly left
him.

A young American, writing of what he saw in
the Crimea,says:
“One would be surprised to see the difference
botweeu the feelings of the armies here. The Erg
iidh are all much downhearted, and do nothing but
lament their sad fate. It asked when they expect
to relurn home, they will say most decidedly ‘no
ever,’ feeling conlident that, if they esoape death
iu the battle, it is on y to be kept as subjects
for the cholera, which rageß fearfully.
Tho French, on the cou.rary, have made several
bowlJing aheys in their camp, and, with a canteen
full of grog, are perfectly regardless of their fu
ture late, never looking further ahead than next
meal time. It, however, speaks badly for the
discipline of the armies, to see the number of
drunken soldiers at all times and places. The
English are forced to keep sentries throughout
their camp, to prevent tho t rench from selling their
soldiers liquor, as it bos already caused the doath
ot several, it being entirely pure spirits. It sells
frum seven to ten Irwncs per bottle.”
lixAT WithoutFbel. —The problem of acquiring
heal without lue),appears to have been solved by
the invention of the machine of M. M. Beaumont
and Mayer, with which by means ot friction alone
they can make water bon. The machine, which
may be seen at their establishment on the Quai
Vaimy, contains 400 liters ot water, which is made
to boil in two hours. A cone of woo i which turns
in a cylinder, sous to produce the necessary
friction, is covered with tow; and that tow, in or
der that it may not catch on fire, is kept constantly
moirtened by a stream of oil which runß on it.
The heat gradually increases, until at last steam is
generated.— (Jaiignani.
