The sh xnoniue crowd armed tliemselves as they

rushed to the pedis and the tight commenced. The
Germans at first retreated to their houses, but *OOll
returued aimed with everything upon which they
could lay their hand*, and the melee renewed
111 earnest. The fight lasted nearly half an hour.
One stalwart German armed by his good Vfovv with
a clothes pole, committed terrible havoc, mowing
trem down rigid and left. Many a broken head
and battered crown will show testimony for a long
time tx» the vigor with which lie administered his
blows.
The Germans, although iu the minority, fought
Uke tigers. Hy this time several Irishmen became
fatigu' d and laid themselves down rather precipi
tately, but if closed eyes, broken noses aud c ocked
skulls were very sure indications, we should say
that they were considerably hurt. Suddenly the re
port of a pistol waw heard, and at the first shot the
irishmen started in a bee lino for home, despite the
attempts of one or two valorous ones who cried,
“Will ye ever come back, ve cowards."
The Germans gained ana kept possession of their
polls manfully, oguinst the attack of those ruffians,
and the disappointed crowd who canic up bold as
1 lions went back like sheep, save a few who wore
left stretched out aa trophies to the stunning blows
of German urms.
An hour or two later the Irish returned iu greater
force, and this time the Gcrmuus were overpowered
by numbers and dispersed. On both occasions fire
uruiß were freely used.
The police themselves were in many cases the
leaders in the tights, and as far as the city authori
ties were concerned, the town whb during the en
tile day at the mercy of a mob of drunken and fe
rocious men.
Among those who wore injured was Charles Wal
ter, a pcaceabte German, who, while walking away
from tlie polls, w&e followed by a dozen of brutal
Irishmen ax id beaten and shot. His arm was broken
and his head cut moat terribly. He was also shot in
1 the head, receiving a severe flesh wound, lie can
not possibly survive his injuries
Frank Seiffert, another German, was set upon

was a worthy man and leaves a wile aud a number

1 Perry Davis' Vegetable Pain Killer
Internal and External jßcmedy.
Opinions of the Press.
: AI - K presume no medical preparation ever offered to
i TV the public ha - been more thorotighl v tested than
PERRY ©AVIS’ PAIN KILLER. Thoiisanda of per-
Isons were they called on to do so, would cheerfully testify
tba. they have used it for various ills with the most sat
isfactory success. It is within our knowledge that an
immense amount of suffering has been relieved by it.
• Its proprietors, Messrs. Perry Davis A Son. save no
pains or expense in order to satisfy the public. Being
strictly honorable men, they observe the utmost uniform
ity in the manufacture of their celebrated Pain Killer.
The materials of which it is composed are carefully se
lected—none but the best quality being used. Bv these
means, the high reputation which the Pain Killer has
long since acquired, is atai! times triumphantly sustained.
In view of these facts, we are by no means surprised to
learn that Messrs. Davis & Son's sales are constantly in
creasing. While we congratulate our friends generally
that so valuable a preparation as the Pain Killer is placed
within their reach, we must be permitted to rejoice *at
the well merited success of its liberal and enterprising
proprietors.—Providenco General Advertiser.
Pkrky Davis' Vegetable Pain Killer,— Volunta
ry, conscientiously, and with much pleasure, we recom
i mend to our readers the above named medicine We
! speak from oar own observation and experience, when
we say that it removes pain as if by magic, from a parts
of the body, and Is the best remedy in nse for checking
diarrhea and removing the premonitory symptoms of
cholera. It is applied both internally and externally,
with the best effects, and none who have used the Pain
Killer would be willingly without it constantly iu their
houses —Cincinnati Evening Nonpareil.
We are glad to learn tnat the Pain Killer (Perry Da
vis’) is having so large a sale in our city. We have
every reason to believe it to be atm ost never failing cure
for pain, and as such is amedic_ne no family shornd be
) without.—Montreal Pilot.

we can ourselves bear testimony to the efficy of this ar

vere*tpain, in a great many cases, and know it to be a
good article for the uses and purposes to which it is de
voted, and even in cases where it may not prove infalli

A CUKE FOK DYSPEPSIA.
SCIENTIFIC men have more difficulty in overcom
ing and controlling the various symptoms of Dyspep
sia, than almost any disease in the world They are so
various in different individuals and cases, that it has
seemed impossible sometimes to obtaiu even temporary
elief from suffering. But a medicine has been discover
ed, which proves beyond a doubt, that in most cases a
permanent cure can be effected:
Dr. H. E. Morrill, a skilful physician cf New-York city,
in his remarks on Dyspepsia, says: “ The most effectual
medicine to improve the tone and energj r of tho stomach,
is that prepared by Dr. George B. Green, nnd ca the
OXYGENATED BITTERS.
I would publish the recipe for preparing this valuable
medicine, if 1 knew what it was; but as Ido not, I can
only recommend its use. It seems to me to be improper
ly called ‘ Bitters,' at least in the popular acceptation of
that term—for it contains no alcohol or other spirit, and is
rather sour than bitter. Though here, by the way, I can
not but earnestly caution the dyspeptic sufferer against
using ‘ Bitters,’ the basis of which is alcohol or other ar
dent spirits. They no more impart real energy to the
stomach than a whip gives strength to a horse. The
stimulation which they excite is only temporary, and
suro to be followed by a reaction, which at length will
inevitably wear out the stomach. Tho inedicino cf
which I am speaking, obviates these objections.”
We have no hesitation in pronouncing the BITTERS
a sure cure for Dyspepsia. None except those who
have suffered all the m'seriea of thisdisease, in its vari
ous forms, can appreciate the value of such a medicine.
Symptoms of the most discouragingnature force tiiß suf
ferer t j believe tb&tiiis case is so peculiar that no medi
cine can reach it. To all who reason thus, wo say, try
tho OXYGENATED BITTERS—they have received
the highest testimonials ever given in favor of any medi
cine. Prepared by Dr. GEORGE B. GREEN.

DENNIS' ALTERATIVE,
OR GEORGIA SARSAPARILLA COMPOUND,
pUKrAKEO by J. DENNIS, M. D., Augusta, Ga.,
1 for Diseases of the Liver and to Purifv the Blood.
It contains, iu addition to Sarsaparilla, the hydro-alco
holic extract of Queen’s Delight, (Stilliugia) White Ash,
Grey Beard or Fringe Tree, (Chionanthus) Tincture of
May Apple or Mandrake, (Podophyllum) and Blood
Root, (Sanguinaria.)
In small doses it acts as an alterative or laxative, in
larger doses as a mild purgative— with some as an active
purgative.
As an alterative or laxative, it has been found useful
in Constipation of the Bowels, Jaundice, Bilious Fever,
Fever and Ague, Sick Headache, Dizziness, various Fe
male Complaints, Chronic Affections of the Liver, second
ary Syphilis and Syphiloid Diseases, Scrofulous Affec
tions, Sores, Ulcers, Blotches, Cutaneous Eruptions, or
Diseases of the Skin, and all other diseases in which Sar
saparilla or alterative medicines are iu?iicated.
That it acts upon the Liver, may be kuowffi from the
fact, that in Jaundice, or cases of Biliousness, it causes
free bilious evacuations, readily removes unnatural yel
low tinge about the eyes and upon tho skin, and im
proves the health and spirits.
In Cutaneops Eruptions, Blotches, Pimples, and other
diseases of the skill, it causes the disappearance of the
Blotches, Pimples, &c., and greatly improves the com
plexion.
As a diet drink, it keeps the bowels free, tho liver
healthy, and the blood pure.
