the tenant must continue to pay it : an thc.t sipoe

The Me Hat ton Crevasse Closed.— The Baton
Rouge Advocate, of Monday evening, 10th instant,
says •
lu our last not ice of the crewsse below this i ity,
tbe piling on each aide had been advanced to with
in fifty feet of cloning, through which the water was
rushipg in a rapid current. On Saturday, Cob
Hebert stdpped operations on tfaqmain work and
directed a zigzag breakwater to be constructed
across the enrren* above the point for closing. Tin#
was d*uic with entire success on Sunday, by means
of two rows of piling filled ‘in W ith bagd of dirt,
which er\ ed to oUeek the tore*of the current nufli
cientiy ‘or the piling on the main levee to be j.fined
near the centre cf the crevasse. This plan has ef
fectually settled the question as to whether Ihr* ov
vßsseoould be mastered.
If tbe weather permits the bagasse and dot work
will be completed to day, and the uew levee so
strengthened as to defy future danger. The water
has receded from the larger portion of the planta
tions of Messrs. McHattmi.
We are informed by W. S. Pike. Enq., of Baton
Rouge, that, the crevasse has been completely closed
and that it is the opinion of those who arecoinpetent
to jL*dge, that the cane on the p antations will not
be injured. This is gratifying intelligence.
Musical Ta ste in America. —An Americau so
joumiog at Rome, Italy, w'ritee to Dwight’s Jour
nal of Music, now’ published by Oliver Hitsou i k
Cos., of Boston :
Perhaps the only thing in which 1 am disappoint
ed in Italy is in its music, and the musical cultiva
tion of its inhabitants. It is true that even the
smallest, towns have opera house*, but the style of
ferformauce is poor. Then, like many other people,
had expected that in Italy, music was in tbe do
mestic circle, brought to almost professional per
fection, and that every other young man w?u* a
Mario, and almost every young woman a Cfrisi. —
But I find myself much mistaken. Asa general
thing there appears to be no more real taste for music
here thnn in the United States ; certainly there are
not half or a quarter so many piano forte? or baud
organs in proportion to the population, if that is to
be taken as au Index.
A Woman's Ready Wit.—The following “take
in’ is too good iu its way not to deserve somewhat
more than local publicity : A few days since one
of tbe clergymen in a certain parish was. quietly
seated in the sacristy of hi3 chapel waiting in these
belove-tide times for the next comer, when, as he
was preparing to depart, a * couple” presented
themselves—their appearance did not indicate that
however rich in one another's love, they had aught
else to boast of, at least as far as the world’s gear is
concerned. His reverence was aecordinly rather
moderate iu his charge; he would be content with
jCI, lie said. Alas ! that sum, though small, was in
advance of what they had calculated on. One
half exactly was the utmost they had to offer. Here,
then, was a difficulty; but a bumper for woman’s
wit! it waa'nt to be insurmountable. Castings
cheering g arce. and oue that was lull of meaning
at her partner, who was altogether disconsolate,
‘under the circumstances,*’ she turns to his
reverence and begs that he would be so good as to
wait just for a few moments, while she runs over to
see if some of the neighbors would not assist her to
‘ rise’’the required amount. There bt'ing no ob
fectiou on this point, 9he went out, aud in a short
time returned, placing the full sura on the table,

we came in lull view of Strong’s Island. The Star

God had not left them t .1 actual want.
The last of September we left this iatand to at
