There is one salject which we feel It to be a doty to
mention In connection with the cotton trade, as it is of
vast importance to the eottoa planters of tbs United
Btatea, involving both interest and reputation. The
•dm taints cf Liverpool brokers and manufacturer*
against send and dost in American cottons are oud and
ioag. To soch an extent was I . carried in packing the
late crop, that they have memorialised the American
Chamber of Commerce to arrest the practice, If possible.
Besides the depreciation of our cotton, the actual loss on
the crop of 1858 is estimated at the enormous figure of
*e< kindred thousand halts ! It Is to the interest of
every planter to do what he can to arrest this disrepu
table practice.

Wednesday buyers came forward more freely, and sales
were effected to thhe*xtent of fully 15,000 bales, prices
being •till Irregular and rather more in favor of par
•basers. These targe large pales left the market with
but a moderate supply ot desirable lists, and factors
were lndined to ask rather more all prices at the open
ing of the market on Thursday, but buyers did net re
spoud to their claims, and with the unfavorable weather
ths business fell off to about 8600 bales Yesterday
satuy weather caused almost an entire suspension of
business, the sales being oonflned to barely 500 bales—
making a total for the past toree days of 39,000 bales,
and for the weak of 43,600 bales, taken prlncpal y for
Great Britain, with some purchases for France, the Con
tinent of Europe, Spam and oar Northern ports. With
respect to prices, we have already stated that fact rs,
under unfavorable European advices and a considerable
pressure of stick, were tndaced to ascept the offers of
purchaser* In the early part of the week, whioh Involved
a decline of fully 4o per lb. Since then there has been
a struggle for a sUII further redaction, but It has been
generally resisted, and it will be seen that a very good
eitent of business has been done, which has been mostly
on tbs basis of the decline above stated. We have to

UTILITY of lightning rods.
That they are eminently useful, no one ean for a mo
ment doubt, who has ever teen the devastating and de
structive effect* of this subtle, but powerful fluid. And
it Uno less a fact, that Iroa Llghtuing Rods neretofore
used, have proved to be entireiy inadequate to conduct
a charge of electricity, owing to the size of the rods, or
to their soon becoming coated with rust, which destroys
their conducting power. We are now able to offer to
the public
A GENUINE COPPER ROD,
With a Silver or Gold Plated Point
THAT WILL NEVER RUST NOR CORRODE.
With about EIGHT TIMES the Con
ducting power of New Iron.
The following table, showing the relative conducting
powers of the several metals, waa prepared by Pro!.
Wormely, and eertitied to by Prof. Smith and Maupin,
of the University of Virginia, as correct and undeniable.
If we take wires of the following met*ls of tquai thick
ness aod length, and pass through them the same
amount of Electricity, and represent the conducting
Eower of silver, (which is tbe best metallic conductor
nown,) by 10U, we shall have the following result:
Silver 100.0] Cadmium 24.51 Lon 12.3
Copper 91.5[Zinc 24. Lead 8.2
Gold 64.9|Tin 14. IPlatinum.. . 7.9
From the above table, it is very obvious that either of
the first named six metals would be better adapted to
the construction of Lightning Rods than Iron, so far as
conducting power is concerned.
Col. Clough, U. S. A. I Dr. A. Campbell,
Capt. Bowman, U. 8. N. | Bethany College.
Pror. Philips, Prof Webster,
Female Sem. Staunton, Va. | U. S. Mil. Academy.
Copper, on account o f its conducting power and dura
bility, is the best of all metals for Lightnißg Rods.
In reviewing the records of tbe most remarkable
strokes of lighting, we find that a Copper Rod, three
fourths of tin inch in diameter, or an equivalent quantity
of Copper in any other form, has been able to withstand
the heating effects of every discharge of lighting occur
ring within the experience cf mankind: and in most
instances a far les* quantity has been sufficient to con
duct safely the most powerful discharges.
In all cases, the metal should expose as great an ex
tent of surface as is consistent with strength, and shonld
be perfectly continuous fr >m the point to moist earth.
The Lightning Rod* of AMOS LYON, are construct
ed upon scientific principles, and fulfil all the conditions
for tho efficient conduction of electrical discharges.
Bimilar bands of Copper have been employed In the
British Navy, with perfect success.

HAYWOOD’S
BALM OP SAVANNAH!
TOR
Cleansing, Nourishing & Beautifying
THE HAIR.
IN presenting the BALM OF SAVANNAH to the
public, the proprietor dees so without any of the
hesitation attending the Introduction of anew and un
tried article, fer it has now been fifteen years before the
public, and each year has added to its popularity The
demand for it having increased so far beyond my pre
vious facilities for its manufacture, the proprietor nas re
cently completed arrangements for producing it on a
more extensive seals, and at the tame time adding to its
former excellence, by the result es a long practical ex
perience in its use.
The following vouchers are gentlemen well known,
and can be attested •
Sataasaj, August 3,1838.
J. M. Haywood, Agent—Dear Sirs I cheerfully
comply with my promise, to give vou nay opinion ot the
merits of your Bala of Savannah. After using it for
some two years, I id prepared to speak from experience,
and do not hesitate to pronounce it the best prepara
tion for the hair that I have ever used. For several
years I had suffered from dandruff, which, at times, es
pecially during bad health, threatened to destroy my
hair 1 tried many remedies, which had been recom
mended to me, without benefit, until I made a trial of
your Balm, which net only removed the dandruff, but
kept my head free from it, at the same time stimulating
the growth of the hair and imparling to It a healthy ap
pearance. I have recommended Uto my friends, simi
larly afflicted, who, in every instance, experienced simi
for benefits from its use. I esteem it a pleasant and
convenient article for dressing the hair, possessing most
la the virtues claimed for the popular cosmetics of the
day, with none of their deleterious qualities. I feel con
fident that it only needs to be known to the public to
become universally popular.
Very respectfully yours,
W. T Tbomfsof,
Editor of Savannah Morning News.
To all whom it mat comcihk i
The obleet of this is to state that I have, for seme
months, nsed Mr. Haywood's Hair Tonio—known as
the Bails of Bavanaah —and have found it incomparably
superior to any other article of the kind. Its use twiee
a week is quite sufficient, net only to disengage the
dandruff, Ae., from the hair, but to prevent its formation
in any applicable quantity. It maintains the hair too,
in that moist and pleasant condition, which so many
other specifies pretend to do, bat almost always foil—in
so far as my experience goes. J. L. Locke,
Late Editor of the Savannah Republican.
Mat Sfi, 1858.
Mr. J. M Haywood, Agent > It gives me pleasure to
certify to the unequalled qualities of your Baim of Sa
vannah. It is the best tonio for the hair, as well as the
most effectual exterminator es dandruff I have ever tried,
lly hair has been inclined t > foil ont aicce my attack es
Yellow Fever in 1854, and among all tbe preventives I
have tried, the Balm of Savannah has been the most
successful. This much I say most cheerfully.
Yours, Ac., F- W. Alexander,
Late Editor of the Savannah Republican.
