DEEP PLANTING.
A patron of ours in for mod us a few weeks
since, that while taking his fodder, ho dis
covered a great difference in appearance
between two pieces of corn, which were
planted at the same time, and in the same
kind of soil. The fodder on one piece of
ground dried up so fast that he could scarce
ly get through with stripping it before it
was entirely burnt up, to use the common
phrase. On going to the other piece, he
found it green to the ground, and in good
plight for stripping. He was struck with
the difference in the two lots of corn, and
on reflection recollected that on getting
ready to plant his corn in the spring, he ran
a furrow with a large shovel or bareshare
plough, after which he followed with a
small plow called a bull tongue, running
it pretty deep in the same furrow, till he
got perhaps half over the piece, when he
concluded to plant the balance in the sin
gle furrow, and discontinued the use of the
bull tongue. The result was, that the part
planted deep in the opening made by the
small plough, where the larger one had
previously been run, produced a third more
fodder, and of a better quality than that
planted in the shallow mark made by the
large plough alone; besides the great dif
ference there must be in the weight of corn,
the latter drying up too fast of course to
make a proper article for bread. This
should be remembered by farmers, and the
evil of shallow planting avoided, especially
, since all seem to think the seasons arc shor
ter, and much drier than formerly.—South

Curing Butter. —The following mode
of curing butter, 1 belive, was practised in
the parish of Udney, in Great Britain. An
account of it has some time since been
published in this country; it is, however,
yet far from being generally known, and
many to whom it is known, have not paid
that attention which the importance, of the
thing requires. I have a wis.li that it
may appear in the Register.
Take two quarts of best common salt,
one part of saltpetre, beat them up together
and blend the whole completely; take one
ounce of this composition to every sixteen
ounces of butter, work It well into a mass,
and close it up for use.
The above, by some, is this proportion
ten ounces of salt to four ounces of clean
sugar.
The following is the commendation given
of this practice, in the Pennsylvania Far
mer :
“The butter cured by this mixture ap
pears of a marrow-like consistence, and
never acquires hardness nor tastes salt; it
eats as sweet after being kept three years
as at first. It must be noted, that butter
thus cured requires to stand three weeks or
a month before it is fit to be used ; if it be
opened, the salts are not perfectly blended
with it, and sometimes the coolness of the
nitre will be preceived which totally disap
pears afterwards.”
The mixture will not cost more tiian one
cent per ounce, which is sufficient for cu
ring one pound of butter. Country farm
ers, is it not worthy of your attention ? As
much so as sweet butter is better, and bears
a higher price.— Farmers’ Register.
Rheumathism —The following receipt
will he found, upon trial, to be a simple but
invaluable remedy for rheumatism. Take
a pint of the spirits of turpentine to which
add half an ounce of camphor; let it stand
till the camphor is dissolved, then rub it on
the part affected, and it will never fail in
removing the complaint. Flannel should
be applied after the part lias been well fo
mented with turpentine. Repeat the appli
cation morning and evening. It is said to
—be equally available for burns, scalds,
bruises, and never fails of success.
