I N undertaking the publication of a paper, de

pursunsive encouragement* nnd gratuitous prom
ises of Mippoit, of many of the most influential,
enlightened nnd respectable member* of the New
York community. It is, to n certain extent n field
unoccupied hy others, and one which is deemed
important to be filled. For while the politician*,
the theologians und tlie literati of oar country have
each their separate oracl^x, which (like that of
Delphos) proclaim aloud and defend their several
opinions and interests; tho cause of fashion, of
plcosurnhle entertainments, of taste and recreut

kind, appropriated sololy to their encouragement
and support. To paint *• life ns it is,” without
the artificial embellishments of romance; to speak
of it* propensities for enjoyment, its appetite for
pleasure, nnd indulgence, and its tendency to en
ter into occasional follies, is*to do what many must
approve, and no one can condemn. For it is cer
