slaved by the vice of Intemperance, bows
tho neck to n despot, who not only de
stroys bis character and usefulness in this
Svoilil, but perpetually goads him on in the
way to everlasting misery beyond the
grave. '
But blessed be God, there is a redeem

But the terrific picture stops not here.
Let us glance at some of tbe effect* of lu-

a few remarks to the temperate drinkers t
It is the province of the human stomach,
to require more nnd more of the same
kind of stimulus to produce the same
quantum of excitement', in proportion ter
the time those stimulants have been im
plied ; Itenco the excitement produced by
tlio daily potation of ono glass of brandy*
for ii gitieo time, will, for its production,
require an additional quantity, until buforo
the unhappy victim is aware of It, n quan

and il there went no other argument
against temperate drinking, the single fact
of the temperate drinker being ulwnyg ex.

into the immeasurable fields of contempla
tion ; the subject is inexhaustible. Let us
turn our attention for a few moments, tn
matters of fact; and if, in the develope-
menl of fads, the calculations should seem
exaggerated, 1 beseech you to pauso before
yon reject ilinni, as there is not a doubt
hut they nre below the whole truth upon
the subj'cct; they aro the result of tho la
bors of competent men having access to
documents of undoubted veracity.
It is ascertained beyond a doubt, that
there aro 72,000,000 gallons of spirituous
liquors consumed annually in the Gniled
States; nnd this consumption, divided
among n population of 12,000,000 of ppo-
ple, making an equal dividend of six gal
lons a piece to every soul; but as wo know
thlit a large proportion of this number is
composed of females and childicn who
drink none, the dividend among tlice who
do drink, must be considerahly'larger.—
Lot every reflecting mind, consider for
one moment the incalculable misery which
must and actually does ensue, from the
consumption of such a vast amount of this
soul destroying poison. This 72,000,000
gallons of spiritous liquors is estimated to
cost mo consumers 66 2-3 cents per gal
lon, producing tho appalling aggregate of
48,000,000 dollars,« sum more titan three
times tho amount necessary for the annu
al support of (he government under which
we live. What a tax, to be paid by the
deluded victims to a love of ardent spirits,
and desliued to be borne chiefly by those
who are lens! able to support or spare it!
nnd for wltnt ? — to procure the necessaries
and comforts of life ? fio; but to under-
step, unheeding the precipice just befuro
him; business first culls him, then tho
love of dissipated company, or wliat ho
falsely styles pleasure, until he forgets to
return at the accustomed hour. ILs wife
with a heart palpitating for his safety, a1>
most frantic with fearful apprehension^
anxiously bugs llte door post awaiting liiir
return. His children catch the sympalhcv
tic impulse from a mother's heart; they
sigh, they look, they watch their mother’s
anguish, hot fear to ask the cause. Tbe
day wanes apace ; the sun has descended
behind tho western hills, and yet im sound
of returning footsteps is hoard. She watch,
es still, and still she lifts her eyes und
heart to heaven, and in the fervor of her
soul, she invokes the Fatlior of her spirit
to save her husband from tbe dreadful con-
sequences of intoxication, till the sable
shades of night obstruct her vision, nud
she retires little bolter than a maniac.—
Alas,for him!
*• Nor wile nor children more shill he behold.
Nor friends nor sticred homo."
Infatuated by (lie allurements of his
Bacchanalian associates, he p ,,take* of
the poisonous nectar, until bereft of his
reason, he falls a victim to the assassin's
dagger.
I would that this picture were the ef
fusion only of n fervid imagination, mid
not tho faiui outline of a melancholy truth.
Oh! fellow-ritiaens, could you realize one
h.ilftbe wretched ness which resells from
even ti mperaie drinking, you would from
your inmost soul, loath iho verv thought
ot that liquid, which is daily covoring ihe
earth with tapiue,murder, devastation tuef
