Wo ha re kept our editorial coluniu ope,,
until the lait moment, with tile faint hop.,
thal «e might be enabled to lay before our
retders lome conventional proceedings
tdicli would, be of interest.. They will
perceive from the aubjOined meagre report,
nat a* yet notbiog of public interest eon-
heeled with the object f&r which the Con
vention woo created, baa been transacted.
But although tbe great measure of redu
cing and equalising the Legislative de
partment of oar government has scarcely
advanced one step, yet we can with safety
say, that great progress has been made in
other objects; which if not of so much im
portance to the people, are vastly so in re
gard to party and personal aggrandizement.
We hazarded an opinion a few weeks ago,
founded mostly on the opinion of those
whom we thought competent to form a tol
erably correct obe, that the Troup pnrty
would be the;maj6rity iu the Convention.
We take ibis occasion to correct our orro-
neous belief. The Clark party ore the
majority, how largely so we cannot even
now state with accuracy, porhaps between
twelve and twenty. They have the pow
er and thoy havo thus far exercised it, of
'Controlling the Convention. If they are
really disposed to remedy the intolerable
evils at present existing, to give to each
freeman of the State.as nearly as possible
the same rights.—if they are disposed to
lessen the burdens of our citizens, and to
render unnecessary additional taxation to
meet the expenses of the government in all
this they will find zealous and cheerful co
adjutors in the Troup minority. If tbo
'objects of the Convention is left unaccom
plished, or but partially and inefficiently
performed, upon that party will assuredly
rest the censuro and the odium.
We seize this moment to say to our
friends that with in the three days past,
since the members of tho Convention have
met at this place, many things have taken
place publicly and privately, which when
spread before them, will create their ut
most astonishment and if we are not greatly
mistakeu excite their strongest indignation.
And as we feel it our duty it is-our deter
mination to lay before the people the act
ings & doings whether privately or public
ly performed, of those to whom they have
confied the important interests for wbicli
'the Convention was called into existence.
Thu'is the peoples Convention, they are
' entitled to he informed of the conduct of
their delegates and whether such an expsio-
tion shall tell for or against individuals, the
- people shall, (so far ns, it within our power)
bo folly and precisely informed.
In regard to the election of tho presi
ding officer, we will faroly say for tho
present, the cause of tho election of that
officer has been partially explained, in tho
correction ol our error itr relation to the
state parties, his great majority however
over Mr Crawford is to be attributed to
other circumstances and combinations, of
which our readers shall in duo time be fully
informed.

Tho convention met this day, at 11 o’
clock,*in the Representatives chamber, at

Intosh, was called to the Chair, and
Jotiph Sturgen, Esq. of the county of Up
son, appointed Secretary,
Mr. Poster of Greene, moved that the
CrMveniion proceed id toe election of a
President of the body, which, after consid
erable discussion on the nroprioty of first
taking the oath prescribed by the Legisla

Witt. F. ■ Gordon, John Y>- Mason, Wat.
S, Archer, Nathaniel H. Claiborne, and
Thomas H. Davonport; are ascertained to
be elected.
The result in tbe other Districts, will be
given as soon as ascertained.

C. F. Mercer, Esq.
Col. Beil obtained a majority over his
compittors in Shenandoah of near 800
votes.
Mr. LoyRil came to Norfolk Borough,
with a majority of 118 votes over Mr.
King. Borouglt and Elizabeth City coun

Mr. Jeffitrson says in h<s works, that
the American people will not bo deceived
in thcir.hopcjof national happiness, fi they
remain virtuous, and I think,” ho says,
“wo shall so long as Agriculture is our
principal object, which will be the case
while there remain vacant lands in any
part of America. When we get piled up
on otto another in large cities as in Europe
aud we slinll become corrupt as in Europe
and go to cadre one another as they do
there.”
Mr. Jefferson lived long enough to see
the eating commence long before there
was any lack of vacant lunds; nay, to see
tlte very fact of there being lands vacant,
which tempted to emigration, urged by
Eastern politicians, ns a reason for high-
hunded legislation to build up manufacto
ries aud keep the Eastern people at home.
Mr. Jefferson’s assertion of tho superi
or virtue of the agricultural population,
was adopted by the writer of Goo. Jack
son’s opening Message, and is warmly as
sailed by Mr. Adants in his long Report.

Singular Occurrence.—About sixteen
years ago, a woman swallowed, in a fit, a
paper of needles. Seven yeaTs afterwards
feeling n pain in her breast, she applied to
a surgeon, in this town, for relief. He
examined the breast, and, on pressing it
with his fingers, he discovered, to his stir
prise, the points of a number of needles,
which he extracted, and then arcertained,
for tho first time, that his pationt had
swallowed them seven years before ! A
few days ago tjic same woman applied
to tho same surgeon, complaining of a pain
in the sarno breast. On examining the
part, he saw that it was dicolorod, and on
pressing it with his fingers discovered
needle, which presented itself by the eyv
and not by the point i On examining the
needle he found that it tv’s? very little oxi

in this singular pincushion.

We have proposed to oxamiae some of tbo gen
orally receitod doctrines, upon tho sahiqot of
Government; which bsfee strive thiuk nothing bat
authority to sapport them, and which ought long
since to have boon exploded; among which is that
laid down and advocated by Blackstone, Psley
and othera, that men on entering into society give
np a part of their natnral liberty so tho price at
wnioh they porchaso the advantages of mutual
commerce, Ac. This preposition Will lor the

We aro aware that in attempting to cnnlrovort
doctrines which havo been so long received as
correct, we engage in an undertaking titan which
nothing within tha compasa of human effort,
seems at first view a more hopeless task.
There is about the homao family, a mental in
dolence which shrinks from tho labour necessary to
the investigation ofopinions and principles, tho upe-
nttion or which does not immediately and sensibly
affect ns individually; aud leaves us to fall in with
tho common correal of opinions, which chance or
the interest of othera may have thrown about us.
After having long assented to, or acted upon these
opinions, we naturally onough engage in their de
fence when assailed, because oar vanity and self-
love forbid the idea of the udmiasion, that with
all the means of arriving at die troth nt hand, wo
should, for a long coarse ef time, have cherished
a palpable error; and it often costs us, to defend
an absurdity thus loosely and carelessly adopted,
iufioitely more labour than bestowed in searching
after truth would have led ns to it.
Since we have been capoblo of making nny re
flections npon the nature of man and tho objects
of Government, there has been to us something
mysterious and perplexing in this doctrine, that
society or Government could not be formed with
out a relinquishment, by die individuals farming
it, of a portion of thoir natural rights. Nor has
the doctrine been divested ofanyofthisclinracier,
by any investigation which we have been able to
make, for die purpose of ascertaining Imw fur it
may be reconciled with principles undisputed and
indisputable, upon which it professes to lift found

for iL Yet, perplexing and mysterious as this
doctrino is it has been adopted by a universality of
consent, which brands a doubt ol its correctness
us political heresy, and in tho opinion of many bar/
even the right of investigating the validity of tho
aatharity upon whiclt it rests. Upon those there-

Let ns see now what he says of the law of nature.
" This law of nnture" says lie " being coeval witli
