a, I had never tech one of these curious
phenomena of nnture, I went on deck to
indulge my curiosity,
'Piny what Is a waterspout?’ inquired
the Pasha; ‘I never heard of one before.^
•A waterspout, your Highness, is the
ascent of a largo body of water into the
clouds—ono of thoso gigantic opeiaiions
by which nnture, apparently withnid clfort
accomplishes her will, pointing oiu to man
the insignificance of his most vaulted un
dertakings.’
‘Humph! that's a waterspout, is it? ro-
plied the Pasnu; ‘l’in about as wist as be
fore.
‘I will describe it moro clearly ) your
Highness, for there is no one tvlii lias a
better light to know what u waters; out is,
than myself.’
A black cloud was over our heat s, and
we perceived that for sonto time it ms ra-
| pidly descending. The main bod 1 then
! remained stationary, and a certain lortiou
j of it continued bellying down nnti it had
assumed tho form of an enormou jelly.

neath then rallied on its surface, increasing
its agitation more and more until it!boiled
and bubbled like a large cauldron, throw
ing its foam aside in every direction. In
a few minutes a small spiral thread of wa
ter wns perceived to rise into the air, and
meet the tongue which had ironed it (tom
tho cloud. When the union had taken
place, the thread increased each moment
in its Size, until it was swelled into it commit
of water Sevpral feel in diamettlr, which
continued to supply the thirsty cloud until
it was satiated nnd coUld drink no more.
It then broke, the sea became smooth as
before, and the messenger of he vett flew
away upon tho wings of the Wind, to dis
pense its burthen over the parched bnrlh in
refreshing and fertilizing Sli'diVers.

'I wns very much interested in the chelri-

Highness would liko me to explain it, as it
will not occupy your attention more than
an hour.’
‘No, no, skip that Huckaback, & go on.’
Rut its soon us i had gratified my curi
osity, I began to be alarmed at my situa
lion, not so much on account of tile means
ofsupporting existence, for there was moro
tliun sufficient.
‘More than sufficient! Why, what could
you have to cat?’
Plenty of ftosh fish your Higltaess,
which had been luken up in the column of

Rut the cold wns dreadful, and 1 felt that I
could not support it many hours longer, nnd
how to get down again was a problem
which I could not solve.
