lucky, und that, as “ Christmas comes but
once a year," all the beauty ol said county,
and of two or three adjoining, would grace
tlte occasion. Such au opportunity of wit
nessing one of tho characteristics of the
good old State of Kentuck, was not to he
lost, so I hired a horse (N. B. I paid for
him,) und rodo for the scene of action,
where 1 arrived about six o’clock, P. M.
But little preparation was necessary to
mingle in the festivities which had com
menced an hour previously; for, yon must
know that country folks are not shackled
by fashionable hours, nnd I entered the
room, where nil was life, among the nether
appendages at least. I instantly felt dt
home, though 1 knew hardly a soul; for I
Prenmu"e“red& White I saw that every ono was pleased writ, every

Pungem vials | ning>
| It is one of the peculiar gifts of the un-
i tutored Kentuckians, to set at ease all
I around them, by liie unostentatious cor-
| dinliiy of their manners, and the hearty lios-
j pilitlily that ever greeis a stranger; though
as will be seen in the sequel, they are
quick to avenge nny imposition upon it.
j Tho first ob|ect that arrested my ntten-
jtiou was,1‘ompev the musician, a port,
i ly gentleman of ruler of 14 stone or there-
I ahuuts, who was ensconced behind the
door, and was working every muscle in his
body; to furnish wliul lie termed “ fuss rale
music.*’ Ilis body was lazily thrown
| back into his chair which groaned, (if ever
| a chair did groan) with tho unusual burden,
, while his head and feet together served to
keep time. His eyes were slightly closed,
us it' the melody of his own fiddle was too
overpowering for their lids, and there was
a sort of half grin on his lips expressive of
exquisite delight; which Waxed into an
whole evening, to ascertain the true char
acter of his physiognomy. As might be
expected, his partner is the smallest lady in
the room; (malt always goes by contrast;)
and he is someti.nes troubled by losing her
in the crowd.
But here comes a couple; to every res
pect the antipodes of the either. The
male is about throe feel, mid the woman is
six at least, I do wish poople would match
themselves more entirely. I cau’t con
ceive why u duck should set up to dunce a
|ig with a crane, or a mouse with a drome
dary. Now, I ant by no menus sure thut
she sees him at all, and us to hearing him if
he could speak—don’t dream of such tt
thing. Unlike the lengthy suhject we
hnvo just dismissed, his feet have much
unanimity of movement go, and lu-
gpliter vary like a sparrow’s or kanga
roo’s, He dunces Mil Up in u heap while
that type of loiigitude his partner, jumps
almost as high its Iris head, and just now
lit on his toes, to Iris huge discomfiture.
They ought to be sent no Bachelor’s
Elysium,’’ und forced to dunce together
eternally.
But move back a little, for there Is ho
ordinary dancer at work nutv. Ho must
bn a genius, for his movemenls are errutic.
I wonder what he is skating on the dry
lloor for. Away he jumps to ono side;
nnd ution, before you get your eyes fairly
on trim, he is o:i the oilier. One would
il'ink he Imd a head wind, and like Com
modore Trunnion, wished to tack through
tile reel. His legs uppeur to belong lb dif
ferent bodies,
“For one, us ir suspicious ol Ilia brother,
Dusirous aeouia to rult uwuy from lliu other;”
itntl you may, consequently soon expect
nullification and disunion. There ought
to be u mill pond everlastingly frozen for
his particular benefit.
All! whom huve we here; witfl out ici-

to look forth from a powerful ntind T He
is a talented youth I afii sure; perhaps

“Full many a gem,” *e.
How uhstacted in the midst of life; and
how little he appears to enjtly the revelry
of the dance ! He wears a frock eoai;
which is usually inadmissible; but his tal
ents tire a cloak for fhati 1 wish 1 could
cultivate his friendship, for I love the so
ciety of talented mon. But how's this!
Oh he dances cross legged! However, the
sons of genius ate allowed to be eccen
tric ; und besides, a student cannot bo ex
pected to study tile greets Very attenlivo-
iy*
“ l’ray, sir, is not that young feljow, in
a frock coat, a man of laluuls 1 lioes lie
not sometimes sour aloft on the wings of
thought, and piorco tho very sky with his
intellect V'
“ Ay,” was the laconic unstvefi,
“ I was suro of it! sure of .it! d’vo here
Tom'! Dou’l you bulievu in Lavutar
now! There’s no doubt about it. 1’
never was mistaken ill my life !”
“He,sir,*' continued tho person I had
interrogated, “ho sir, is the very genius of
village tailors! bet I suspect never soars on
any wings but Iris goose’s and is not accus
ed of piercing with any thing but his nee
dle !”
I was thunderstruck I
“ A tailor! n cobbler of clothes ! Oh !
impossible ! utterly impossible !”
I wish the tailor’s goose down the fel
low’s throat, and Lavutor in a Dutch ov
en with nil my heart. Hero have 1 been
delving through Lavutor for vearS—like
a woroi that Went through twenty four vol
untns, never penetrated by any other living
creature—and all, to mistake a tailor for u
genius ! Itis ton bad !—
“ But who’s this with such a fino coat
and whiskers walking through the dance
with an air of studied grace und norichal-
once ! He looks like a citygentleniun.”
“ And that is,” said U person beside
me, “ Doctor Lcgratid, front tho city of
C.”—“ Doctor Legrand, from tho city of
C.!—Doctor Legrand! Why, sir,
I
have livco there all my life, and never be
fore heard of Doctor Legrand. He
ample gateway, exhibiting u double rotv of i be a new comer; but let me look at hint.
say, illy jionfey, arn’t yott is doctor !”
At this startling query, and no leu startling!
manner in propounding It; the muaic, dancing,
mid conversation instahtly ceased, and tha room
was as silent as thrtufth It had been empty.
Doctor Legrhnd, froth tho city of C., some-
what thrown off his shard, looked at his querist
in unfeigried astonishmom; but in a moment,
recollecting liimstolf, his expression* changed
to yipe of supreme anger and contempt.
Hia whole ftumfe quivered with rage, aa he
exclaimed,
".k®!*? y°hr bold, instantly; yob Scoundrel,
I II thake you repent it,"
"Oil! well now,” said th« Iriperturbable Six-
footer, with a camion’s mouth sort of expresliori
in liis eyfeS, »• you need’nt think ybu are a gwalb
to bully und body hereabouts; for you arn’t; but
if ydu at a real doctor, lot it out, and-w^-.”
‘ Let me go!” screamed tilts infuriated
black-legt “let me go you rakcal 1 I'll have
satisfaction for this insult.”
“ That you shall," quoth mine host, whfi
having been iptormeo uf' urn imposture,
now entered tilo loom; “ Here, Harry—
Bill—Saddle that hie sorrel hone, and brine him
out !”
This was the knell of the doctor; tkho how
submitted to whatever might come;
By this time tho ball room presented a scene
of indescribable cottftisiou. The gentlemdti
had all collected round the soi disant doctor;
while those Indies who had reriiuined through
curiosity, fled from a scene not likely to be much
to their tasto.
The discomfited black-leg, finding nothing to
be gained hv blustering, tried the effect of ad
appeal lo the geuerosity of his hearer*; but only
received such responses as,
“ Tar und feather him 1” from ohii.
“ Hide him on a rail!” frdiu another;—while
a third exclaimed;
" Give hint forty, save one !”
" Ay ! a little oleaginous extract of hickory,
which is synonymous, is generally beneficial!”
echoed a pedagogue front behind.
-“ Mark him with two slits end fi cross "1
echoed the dealor in pork.
“ Nick him !” ejaculated liie jockey, on •
high key.
“ String him tip under the second section l"

At this moment, Bill popped Hit greasy feed

the emphasis on the iutal title with a half smolht

tor’s Bucephalus was already )u wailing. He was
about to mount, and, indeed Was half way to his
seat, when the militia captain, with the coolness
of a warrior, dragged hiih down, determined, as
he said, that no rule of military ethics should bb
infringed in his presence.
“ 1 say thy friend," said lib, with ludicrous
gravity; “ you’re no soldier; or you’d know Si
how you ought eternally to retreat, face to ihd
enemy !’’
With this soldierly council, the captain lifted
him to tiie saddle, us ho termed it, in reversed
order, that is, with his back to the horse’s head.
The captain then drew a roll of stout cord front
his *fotaging cap,’ made of 'coon skins, with
the tail pendant from behind, and proceeded de
liberately to fasten the feel of Dotilor Legrand,
front the city of C. under his horse. As he
stepped back from the completion of the job, the
jockey cried dt the top of his voice at the same
time extending his whip,
“ Clear tiro track—the rider's mounted !’’
which was instantly followed by the captain,
“ Attention the whole ! Quick time—forward
march !”
As tho last word was utlored; the jockeji
brought his whip with a loud crack on the flanks
of the doctor’s steed, the company set up a
shout which was joined by the gobble-obble of p
veteran turkey over head; the horse sprang furi
ously into the road, and the clutter of hisjhoofip
was soon lost in the distance !

While the donee is yet in its vigor, let

partaking of its pleasure.
Here comes # young tree of a fellow,

find enough adipose mailer, in his whole

if his color were the right kind, could eas

“ He is not a doctor any more than you,
and is a black-leg.”
“ Well now,” continued the aforesaid

But I tell you what, stranger, lie's a chop-

“ He's ridin on the wrong nag this time

For a moment 1 felt for him for I well
knew that hia chance for mercy Was small;
but my city pride waa effectually rooted,
and 1 looked for the result with interest.
The whole room was bow startled by
the loud tones of the six-footer, who; after
considerable roanoeavering was enabled to

arm.
