Curious Lam Suit.—A law suit of a very
.singular nature has just been decided bcfo*t?

ono of the Aldermen of our city, in the shop of
A certain knight of tlm razor, in speaking of dm
manner fn winch candidates for office were (to
uso his own expression) libelled in dm public
prints, declared that he considered such publica
tions did more good than harm »o die parly, and
jocosoly remarked. “ I would give five dol
lars a day to a smart clever fellow to write
against me.” Tho suit above mentioned was
brought by a person who, being present, hoard
the reward offered, and who, on the trial, proved
that ho had written many severe philippics
ngainst the Alderman, the defendant in the suit,
in ono of our evening papers, and therefore lie
appealed to tho law, doiminding judgment for
eight days lubor at j$o per dav, amounting to
$*10.
The trial occupied tho whole day and until
0 o’clock in the evening, whon the jury not ex-
nelly seeing the propriety of making a gende-
man pay for words spoken in tho precincts of a j i
tonsor, most probably in jest, brought in a ver
dict for tho defendant. Whatever may bo the
general tendency of such writings, they did not
stand tho. Alderman in such stead, for he lost his
