We trust, however, that our fears may trot
be realized—That the freshen ul Alabam.
will put him in the right track, and standing
npon their chartered rights, expel these
federal mercenaries from their.territoiy. or
make them bow to the majesty of the law.
The people of. Alabama shou'd prepaie
for the worst—they should place their
Slate in on attitude of defence—and if
Gon. Jackson dare attemp/ to concentrate
a force within its borders for lha purpose
«f putting Her eitiaen* to the bayonet—let
them meet the iovaders with the ancient
spirit of their father., at their ivater’s-edge,
“dispute every inch of ground-drain eve

burn every blade of grass, and make the
last entrenchment of liberty their graves.”
If that crisis arrives when llto sword most
be drawn to repel federal aggression and
assistance be requisite to sustain the sov

sons, falter not for a moment, there are
thousands of free spirits ill the land, whan

Thn Creek Controversy.—To tho ex
clusion of ourusnal quantity of miscellaneous
lending, wc Iwve to-day devoted a large
portion olonr paper to the Creek Contro
versy. This question is now a topic of ab
sorbing interest in Alabama, and if not
speedily adjusted, will bo productive of
much feeling in the v other States. The
measure proposed by tho President, oven
if sanctioned by taw, (which wo question
most seriously,) is beyond doubt one of «
most arbitrary kind, and directly opposed
. to the spirit of our institutions. It carried
into execution, it wilt produce a degree ol
distress and suffering umong the Citizens of
tho new counties in Alabama, scarcely a
ever equalled in thiscoutrv, and distress,
tpo, to which the guilty and tho innocent are
alike sobject. We cannot but admire (ito
mild and temperate, but firm and decided
course adopted by Gov. Ivaylc; and sup
ported as he is in a just case, by the whole
people of his Stale Wc hope we will be en
abled to stay the hand of desolation so im
prudently outstretched. Tho candid rea
der will perceive that ho is perfectly wil
ling to concede to tho Government every
thing usually claimed bv it in such cases,
but appeals to the civil tribunals to protect
tho Slate against what he believes to be uu-

and privileges. Let the question be settled
in this manner, and wo doubt not alt may
yet be well.

which, even the most moderate of them

they tiad prematurely begun to hail their

setting up the trophies of conquest on the

The enforcement Bill.—One of the first
subjects to which the southern members of

diroct their attention, will be ibe repeal of
the odious Act annihilating the Sovereign

but by the absolute and uncontrolled will
of irresponsible majoii'y uf Congress,
which is worse than any species of mon

Union can know no peace. Tito southern

Should a Slate so ample in resourr.-
and so indefatigable in spirit as Georgia
really is, oarnestly arouse and resolutely
address itself tu the noble und incalculably
useful schemes uf improvement, which are
just now beginning to be agitated, it is im
possible lo predict wnat wonders may be
wrought by her in a foiv years. There is
certainly every thing to entice and compar
atively nothing to dolor, in this glorious
field ol enterprise. Localities, lacilities
and intmodiaie results ul siupeftduous hen
ofits, conspire tu animate to the undertaking
and enlist the purso and capacities uf the
country in the prompt and confident pi ose-
cution ol the great work. We lire far
from supposing that ihe laborious details
connected with a general and judicious di
rection of Rail Roads in Georgia are ye.'
perfectly explored and thoroughly ascertain
ed. Enlightened scientific ruconnoilsanhes
aru demanded, to combine every practica
ble advantage and avoid every material
misconception and incongruity. But in
formation enough is before every one of us
already to know that a main construction
connecting Columbus and Macon with Sa
vannah, is feasible and practicable, and
would act as a wealth-creating talisman
upon a vast and feriilo region ; speedily
making ' (be wilderness blossom as the
rote." Without pretendtog to assiga nil
tho reasons for the idea, to us it as apparent
that the existence of natual outlets by the
Ocmulgee and (he CHaltaltdoclim, sltoudl
throw no damp upon this enterprise, but in
a liberal and permanant consideration of
the subject, so far from superceding its im
portance, or bringing into question its ulti
mate utility, rather enhances the one and
will be found lo bo happily promouve of
the other. Tho statistical geographical
and commorcia! principles upon wnich this
idea might, we think, he vindicated, will
not now be insisted upon, from one want ol
both preparation and room. Let it he ro
mnmbured, ho'.vnvc-r, that an increase of
competition is the life of markets, and mul
tiplied avenues of trado accumulate capital
and quicken demand. A number of co -ex
isting options ns to the disposition ol com
modities is tho best restraint und the stron
gest safeguard against depressing combina
tions and leagued monopolies in any one
m irket. The just influence that tho uu-
ciotit, generous nnd almost sole sea-port of
our own Staio ought lo exert in this affair,
wo do not urge. It would be ludicrous to
insist upon disinterested considerations upon
such a subject. But in a community who
have common burdens to sustain, it is
certainly excellent household policy
throw as much as possible the profits uf
nur traffic and thu sktnitnings of our agricul
ture into thu l ip of our owu principle em

tain sense that of llte whole State, and

To the gro.it rood which is contomplatod

speedy and entire success. Our visions
of its completion aud happy effects are al

Nrwspapbrs.—It is an astonishing fact,

never read a newspaper, and who know
hut little more what is going on in their
