IVlien Freedom s t,saner sit's in night.
And glory leaves the world below;
Oil! who shall bring it back to light
And bid its stars more brightly glowf
Her sons shall startle at her call
And raise her banner from tho grave,*
lfar sons shall mount the fortress wall,
And shout witli glory, “lzt hkr wavs;"
Yes, let Irar wave while time shall last,
The symbol of the mighty free,
Nail, nail her strongly to the mast, l
And white she floats o’er land and sea—
Let vengeance scute the wretch that dare
One star to blot or stripe to tear—
llat horns, ix with the Eagle's flight,
Her fkme is traced id morning light.
Let Crescents and Palmettos ware
By wide Bosphors** classic shore,
IFiisre miscreants dig religion’s grave;
Or butlio their bratal bands in gore—
Bat let no impious mortal fling
Another banner to the lislil,
While Freedom's Eagle spreads her wing
Above Columbia’* mountain height;
'Twere better for to die mid fire
Titan raise another banner higher, J, E. D.
INTERVIEW WITH ROBERT BURNS,
It was uboul the year !7'J5, that I made
a lour for Scotland, with the solo hope ol
seeing Burns. I was successful. On
my arrival at Edinburgh, where I had
some literary acquaintance, 1 obtained a
letter ef introduction to him. 1 had al w y»
keen a great admirer of his genius, and ol
many traits in his charactei; and 1 was a-
ware that he was a persou moody, and
somewhat difficult to deal wi(h. I was re
solved to keep ill full consideration the ir-
rit;|bility of Itis position in society. About
a tuile from Iris residence, on a bench, uu
dnr a tiee, I passed a figure, which from
the engraved portraits ol him, I did not
doubt wns the pool; but I did not venture
to address him. On arriving at Iris bum
ble collage, Mrs. Burns opened the door;

into a uoaf apartment, and said that Ihe
would send for Burns, who was gone for u

bench by the road side. At first I was not
cutiicly pleased with his countenance; it
was not only dark and somewhat coarse
and vulgar, but did not look good teiu;iered.
I thought it had a Sort ol capricious jeal
ousy, us (if he was hull iuclinod to treat rau
as ui intruder. 1 resolved to bear it, mid
try il I could humour him. I let him choose
his turn of conversation, but said a lew
