JOB FEINTING
Neatly and promptly executed at this Office.
Force ok Imagination.—A few yearn
ago n celebrated phys!* inn, author of an ex
cellent work tif imagination being desirous to
add experimental to Ills theoretical knowledge,
mado application to thn Minister of Justice to
be allowed nn opportunity of proving what
he assorted, by an experiment ou a criminal
condemned to death. The minister complied,
witit his request, and delivered over to hunt
mi assussiu, a man wlto had been born of dis
tinguished parents. Tho physi.cian told him
•hat sevoroi persons who had taken nn inter
est iti bis futnily imd obtained leavo of the
minister that ho should sutler death in some
other way than on the scaffold, to avoid tho
disgrace of ri public execution; and that the
easiest death lie could dio would bo by'blood-
lelliiig. Tho criminal consented to tbo pro
posal and counted himself happy in being
freed from the painful exhibition which ho,
would else have been mado of, and rejoiced'
at being thus enabled to spare the' feelings or’
liis friends and family. At the tqqtoimedi
time the physician ropuired to the prison, - and:
the patient having been extended on a table,,
liis eyes bound, and every thing being ready,
lie was slightly pricked near tho principal
veins of tho legs and arms with the point of*
a pen. At tile four corners of tho table were
four little fountains, filled with water, Iron*
which issued small streams, falling into basin*
placed there to receive them. Tite patient
thinking that it was his blood that trickled in
to the basins, became woukcr arid weaker by
degrees; anil tho remarks or the medical men
in uReudauts in reference to tho quality and
appearance of the blood (made with that in
tention) increased tho delusion, aud he spoko
more uml more faintly until his voico was at
length hardly audible. The profound silence
which reigned in tho apartment, and the con
stant dropping nf the fountain, had so extra
ordinary tin efiebt on the brain of the poor
patieut, (hot all liis vita! energies were soon
gone, although n very strong man l and he
died without having lost u single dirip of blood.
