O, let my harp like Judah’s lyre,
To silence be consigned;
Each sound extorted ftoni tho wire,

TEXAS.
We havo been favored with the following
copy of a lettot written by a high functionary
in the service of the Mexeait Government,
addressed to a respectable house'in this city.
Mexico, 10th September.
Dear Sir :
Snnor Don S. R. ****••, who was sent
to Texas last year, on a private mission by
the government of the ex Vice President Fa
rias has just returned to this capitol and repor
ted on the rapid increase of that, colony. lie
visited most of tito settlements situated be
tween the Rio de losNueeos and the Sabine
river, namely, Dewitt’s Grant, Austin Friars,
Brazoria, Sun Jacinto river, Galveston Buy,
ns far as the small towns of Harrisburg and
Nacogdoches.
From his personal observation it appear*,
that the iucrease in the population, as well as
tho improvement anil {advancement of that
vast and beautiful portion of our republic
within (lie last two years, are most extraordi
nary. lie estimates tho whole population,
between the two ubove rivers, at 45,00(1 in
habitants. The arrivals of settlers at Mata-
gordn, Braznrin nnd Galveston Bay from New
Orleans, and the ports in the Allantin, inclu
ding New York, exceeded last year three
thousand people, and nearly a similar number
had entered the territory of the colony, by
land, through Nutchea to Nacogdoches, from
Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Illinois, Ken
tucky,Ohio, and other Western States.
Trie crops have yielded this year a rich re
ward to the farmers, for not only have their
lands produced plentifully, but as the agricul
tural produce cannot keep pace with the sad
den increase of consumers, all descriptions of
grain brought a good price in the colony.
Wagos were likewise very high on account
of tbo short number nf laborers and mechan
ics, tito great demand for all descriptions of
labor. Capital fell short to carry on the nu
merous profitable operstionsof the new comers,
but more so to fill up the vast field for enter
prise opened in every section of tbs couutry.
On the whole, the Tcxnnns have reason to
feet by litr happier in that colony than tha
people in the Central States of this republic,
being free from all kinds of Taxation, from
the military, from piieetcrnft, political intrigue,
apd finally from excitement and commotion.
A law,-allowing free toleration in religious
trisuers—in ndnpion to the establishment of •
Judiciary, and trial hy jury, 'was sanctioned
Inst spring by the joint legislature of Cohuhu-
itt and Texa«, there being great probability
that next spring—when the population wilt
certainly exceed 50,tHK)—the Texanos will
petition .tnd receive from'our government tiro
separation from Conhuha and the establish
ment of their own, nt Sun Felipe, with tho
consequent right of electing their Representa
tives for the General Congress in Mexico.
To the present day the people in Texas
have given vnequivoeal proof of their deter-
rmuntion to nniirifain their Union with the
Alexictiu Repu blic. Indeed were they under
any othergovei'umenl whatever they could
feel neither inoriMniiepondent, more free, or
more exempt rronV taxes and othor shackles
than they are now.
Under such considerations, and haring no
hopes of an immediate termination of our in
ternal dissentions in these) sections of rite Ke-
utbiic, I, as wnii as ten or twelve respecta-
>le friends, havo come to the determination of
selling our property here, and settling in Tex
as with our ftimiitrs next winter. Should
you not, therefore, have negotiated my-scrip, I
request you'.not to .dispose of a single sitarts
under twenty-live cents per acre, as besides
rite flattering prospect of the colony, and the
friendly disposition of our govemq*eat towards
the faithful, peaceable aa<Tindustrjuns Texan
os, 1 find it preferable to, locale forty or filly
families in my grant, than to dispose of my
scrip at the low prices you quoted ipyoar fa
vor of the 25th June.
