ubly lmvo plenty of puticuts who commit
health aud life to his quackery. Tito doctor
in Connecticut nemo twenty yenrs ago who
cured consumption in all its stages with rain
water drops, was an innocent fellow enough,
especially as ho charged nothing for Ins drops,
and only made each patient buy u book filled
with certificates of his womlorful cures. But
most quacks do not deal in rain water. Their
nostrums either kill or cure, nnd generally it
is tho former. Yet they declare they nover
lost a patient. There have been somo such
quacks in Cholera practice, who have assor
ted roundly that ail their patients recovered,
when in fnct corpses wero strewed all along
their pnth, many of thorn killed without tho
help of Cholera nt all. The mere safe impo
sitions ofquackory are practised upon thoouro
ol diseases of parts of tlio system—such us tho
eyes, the cars, the teeth, &c. One declines
he can make n bald head sprout with all the
freshness of youth and enttso ringlets to flow
from an old poll, luxuriantly as they do upon
the head of a mermaid. , lie Ims plenty of
cortlficatos of success, and thousands pay free
ly a dollar, or whatever the price may he, for
a phial of the precious, fructifying liquid, and
apply it from day lo tiny to tiieir unvogetating
pates, nnrl wait, und feel, and look in tlio gloss,
to catch the first germinations of new locks,—
but wnit in vain. Tlioy find at’last that the
only way to fulfil the promises of the quack,
is to buy'a “scratch” of tlio barber. Deafness
can be cured infallibly by filling tho cars with
“tho Imperial, never failing, sound-restoring
soporific,” poured warm upon the tympanum.
Hundreds try it,'and all hear less than ever;
though a few imagining that they hear nois
es which were never made, give certificates
of wonderful cures. No one, so far ns wo
know has ever promised to mnke new teeth

Charity:—Among the graces that adnm
the Christian character, (hot of charity has
ever been considered tlio brightest,, tho pur
est, the best. It is a gem of tlio first water;
no cloud con obscure it—no rude hand sully
its purity. Its sister graces dwindle ’nwoy in
its prcscnco, nnd in tlio hour of expiring na
ture, it remains tho only solitary companion
of the departed one, that sustains unmoved
the shock of death. Indeed it may he termed
in nn eminent degree, the must distinguished
characteristic of Christianity, the Alpha nnd
Omega of all religious truth. It received its
.birth in the bosom of divine benevolence, nnd
wns fostered under tho beamings of 1)10 Son
ofRij-litcousncss. And tv hen tho lips of truth
uttered some of its first councils, Charity was
tire theme, the subject upon which was lav
ished; divino oloqucncc. And where'er this
hcnvcn-liorh-spirit has found its way, there it
has ditluscd the breath of Paradise, shedding
around (he blessings of Providence; and pro
claiming a jubilee to tho sons and daughters
of misfortune. ‘
Slaves in Cuda—In Tudor’s tourinMcx-

slaves imported into the Island of Cuhasinco

Tho rumor which has been flying l _b rol 'S' 1
all tho papers in the country, that E. h. Av-

to be unfounded in fact.
