A SIMPLE KKSIEDY roR THE CROUP — J'rilS
dungerons disorder, which has proved fatal to
cliildien, in almost every climate and rtittin-
lion, and which is the dread of many a:: anx
ious parent, may be. subdued by the timely
application of a remedy, which is not only
simple, but easily obtained. As soon as th'
symptoms of croup appear, Scotch snutf mu
be applied to thoihront of the child, either '
tho form of- n plaster, or by rubbing it on t(‘»
•brout and chest; this can easily be done ‘<y
mixing the snuff with any fat or oily sub
stance, which makes it adhere to th« «kit»--- ^
If applied too low. on the chest, it causes vomi
ting ; and tis the application lo the throat ap
pears to occasion nausea sufficient to throw-
out a moisture on tho skin, it is supposed that
this alone inis n tendency to ameliorate tho
disease. Thu -writer of this, has seen tho
must beneficial results from the timely appli
cation of this simple remedy, and.but recent- '
iy witnessed its efficacy in the case of a child
five years old, subject to this alarming disease
from its infancy. Tito family were called up
at midnight, and found the child laboring un
der all the distressing symptoms of croup ac-
cumpanied by considerable lever. A plaster
of Scotch snulf was immediately prepared, by
mixing it with some pomatum 'which was at
hand, aud spreading it on a bit of cloth cut
to extend pattly round the throat, nnd a little
over the chest. This was immediately ap
plied, but as the parents were too anxious to
rely on this remedy nlono, tlioy sent for a
physician,, but, by the lime tie arrived, the
disease was greatly ameliorated, the difficulty
of breathing , utving ceased, and a considerable
moisture appearing ou the skin, and the cough
and resllessness utso grcutly relieved. In this
stage of the disease, the physician recommen
ded tlto feel to be bathed in warm water, ur.d
u doso of castor oil tobe administered; the
child was then put to bed, became quite com
post), and by the morning all symptoms of
croup had disappeared.—Southern Agricultu
ralist.

Chronic Rheumatism.—-We are not ready
to add to tho number of tho remedies which
havo been prescribed for this painful disease,
without a certainty that such addition will bo
valuable in practice. This certainty wo are
convinced will attend the remedy it is the ob
ject of this article to bring before the profes
sion. It is a mixture of eqanl parts of the
balsam of sulphur and spirit of turpentine.—
Six drops of this mixture may be given morn
ing and evening, and the dose increased two
drops a day until it produces stranguary. when
tho dose should be diminished a little and con
tinued until the disease is removed. We Vrave
been recently informed of tho good eflecls of
this mixture in a great number of instances,
and one very remarkable case has fallen with
in our notice, in which the disease in its worst
ferm vanished before it in a few wocks alv
though tho patient had bocn long using with
out advantage the usual and other most pow
erful remedies for this troublesome and pain
ful malady.—Bos. Med. /nt.

.ariTTitto .versus Grumbliiso.—Mr*.
Trollope, the Eugliah Tourist, siiys, “An A-
morican spits from his cradlo to his grave—at
tho board of his friend—althc feet' ofhis mls-
iivm—at trie drawing roam of his president
and at the altar of his God. lie salivates for
three score years and ten—and when tho
glands of his palate can secrete no lunger, he
spits forth liis spirit, and is gathered to his fa
thers to spit no more-” An English tourist’s
habits of grumbling, may be written dawn ia
a similar style. He grumbles his way to' our
shores—-grumbles a two mouths’ journey
through 1J10 country—grmnblcs at our institu
tions—and, (if he ao not grumble himself into
our state prison for picking pockets) theu
grumbler his way across tho Atlantic to writo
a grumbling book for its grumbling readers.—
In fact, he grumbles from his cradle to his
grave—at tho feet of his king—in the kitchen
of his wife—and at tho altar of his God. He
grumbles for three score years and ten—and
whon his tongue, from old oge, can grumble
no lo.ngcr, lie grumbles out his spirit, and is
gathered to his fathors to grumble no more.—
