\Ve lvave read 'witli.fix&p&j) which language u
ido tttr to convey, a lollcr of SrE.tcEg RilEt,
detailing tho savage, brutal, and outrageous, con-
duct’of the State's agent toward him, in the coun
ty. of Murray. Wo doubt whether n parrsllel in
stance of cnonriity end cold-blooded mttrdcrons
conduct can be found on this sido those nseessin-
Hlc scenes, which disgrace tho bloody history of
the worst military despotism in the world. Sir.
Riley states that ho wos.abused by erciy black
guard epithet that vulgarism could henp upon him,
threntenod.-ln every menacing manner, and finally
ftedupon by'tho band that followed the agent;
~ and wounded in several places severely; If’ not'
dangerously. .He.was then sent off bleedingoed
exhausted tiirough the most inolemeht weather to
tho jail ofCasscoilnty, confined in a dungeon, ond
•• t» tto’mrannd issued that his friends should hnvo ho
communication with him. This was done under
Abe immediate view and by command of Wm. N.
SBisitePePretending to act under tho authority of
this State and bearing in his pocket a commission
as its authorized Agent. If half of Mr. Riley’s
narrative is true (and who that knows him doubts
•it) the Agent and his infamous abettors deservo to
ibejibeted and their names handed down to pos-

Tho Andrew Jackson arrives every Friday ond

Fhou llttlo specks of war that occasionally ap
pear in tho North-west, it would sirike a peaceable
. man that the State of Ohio and Michigan Territo
ry, arc likely to settle their dispute about tho boun
dary line according to the most approved mod
ern fashion (to wit:) by the arbitriment of the
sword. Tho Governor of Ohio, with bis aids and
subalterns, is marching it is said to the debatable
ground, where Major Generals and Brigadiers
chock full of wrath and courage are rallying the
militia, fur tho furious fight. The authorilics
of Michigan, determine J that said Territory shall
nut be lessened or weakened by a division of its
soil or a-surrender of its sovereignty, are said also
to bo making fit and proper preparations to address
lathe physical feelings of their opponents, cogent
and convincing arguments. Why dues tho Presi
dent suffer these “corporate" authorilics so to on-
,«hnger tho public peace and threaten tho dissolu
tion of tlio Union? What has become of tho po- :
Fency of Presidential Proclamations, that one is not
thn odered in the ears of these belligerents, and they
commanded by authority to go borno and keep the
peace? Where is tho regular army, that it is not
despatched to restore quiet, by murdering tho citi-
aens of these rebellious provinces? If tho people
«f a certain Stalo beyond the Savannah river were
to put on such airs, tho way tboy would find them
selves dancing on the open atmosphere, would be
somethin g after the pattern of t! lo Polandcre. It will
ao happen however, in republieks ns woll as olso-
wlierc, that fish are mado of some, and flcsli of
ethers.
Tiie chief Magistrate has in this threatened em
ergency ns wo understand, contrary to liis usual
' custom on such occasions, pursued a politic and
. prudential course by the appointment of individu
als! who are to pour tho oik of conciliation upon
<bo troubled waters' of discontent. . Mr. Rives,
•of Virginia, aud Mr. Rush of Pennsylvania,
are said to be charged by the Executive with
’this important and deliento task. Tho measure
Vo approve; of the men selected wo cannot say
Vo much. Mr. Rush has no doubt been rewarded
in this small way for Ids Into conversion to tho
^Democratic faith, and mny ho a man, for aught wo
Know, whoso thoughts are bent on peace. But
Rives, what has lie been solcctcd for? His im
pudent conduct in rotation to the French treaty
well nigh involved that country and this in a
most unnatural war, and will ho be opt to allay
the angry feelings of those already irritated? We
think not. He must ho a bad peace maker, whoso
imprudeaco stirs up strife and leads to war.
Wo much fear however that tho executive lias
S ursucd nosuchprudent course, and.that tlio olivo
ranch has not been extended to the angry. Wo
■ flay wo fear so; Jbr the President has an idea,
. strange as it may be iu a country lilio tM., shot
*ku sworn is n much more potent pacificator, titan
xhe arts of tho diplomatist, ortho arguments of the

• Wb liavo been favored with the perusal of a
paper entitled the “New York Spirit of the Timet;"
and so effectually did its sprigbtlincss banish the
‘“Bines" with which we were enveloped, that we
feel in conscience bound to mnko a public ac
knowledgement of our gratitude, rind to rccora-
mond said paper to all Who may ho similarly af
flicted, its a specific against care—a panacea to ev
ery disorder of the imagination. Ho who can
rend St mid not entch the spirit of its mirth—he
who is not kindled by the genius which shines in
'every column; who derives no profit from its crit
icism and no plensnro from its wit—in n word lie
. who is not enabled by a perusal of that paper to
speak in tho authoritative language of a notentato
"begone dull core; I bid tlico begone from me,"
We say that that man mny safely lio in the sun-
•hinc without feeling its influence and wnndcr in
the bower of Beodemoro without cnjpying its fra-
panes. For ourselves wo hnvo long been hypo-
■ cbondriacnlly disposed; so much so that our friends
frequently pronounce us beyond tho roach of hell
JCbore; hut when wo opened the Timet and com-
bicnccd inhaling its exhilarating gas, there was a
sudden and sensible diminution of tlio heavy pres
sure upon our spirits, and soon we began to grow
affile UveLy'aadairy. At the firsttdraugbt wo felt
"pretty talubrioih," at tlio second “tomething bet-
Jir,” at tho third, in qaito a state of •‘jolification”
the tvPtld began to brighten in its appearance; men
trad things looked not so gloomy as they were wont
to do, and In a few minutes wo became self-satis
fied and at peaco with' all mnnklnd—cheerful In
despite of tho dyspepsia { happy in defiance of
embarrasments, and fairly kicked doctors and death,
debts and duns into tho middlo of next week. So
much for tho effect which tho Spirit of tho Times
bad upon us; we were disposed to try what effect
it would produce upon others. The first to whom
WO presented it was a man or lugubrious counte-
ttonce; he read and smiled—tho second wosnrocr-.
ryhenrtcdlurk; heroad ond roared. Every render
rennctl to find something congenial to his particu
lar taste. The jolly disciples of Momus spoke
witl?rapture ortho Salmagundi department—tho
Jocky-Club gontlamon were animated with tho
spirited and soul-thrilling accounts or the sports
gnd triumphs of the tqif—the tqWccltoneous man
fuutid politics, poetry;] criticism, satire\ indeed h
little of the best of-every thing, whilst all agreed
as to one pointvthat 'tho'labors of tho, inimitable
editor himself, formed tlio mast sprightly nod a-
grcesble part of his paper; Truo it is that wo
onebdofored one negative * against its claims, to
public favor. A noa-descript article ; the flimsi
est of all nature’s maaufactues ; a kiuJ off paste
board man, made up millinery and perfumery,
with oil. the beauty of bis harbor’s block; and tho
wit of his tailors goose; approaehod us in ft min
cing step, and said; with a most- delcctablo lisp on
the tongue, that as for Hs part (wo always- mnk».
such speaking vegetables use rite gender to which
they bolong)-“as forits part, it disdained tojMrain
the.strings of its waiscoat iti opening so'wide a pa
per merely to read a piece of importipeneo about
gentlemen's not paying tbeir tailors bill—such, stuff
was horrid tulgar and proved the editor an uriede-
coted plebion.” Convinced by the speech of this
non-pariel of butterflies, this fabric of mull-muslin
and moonshine that ho had unfortunately blundered
on something in tlio paper in which lio .saw, os in a
mirror, bis own insignificance too faithfully re
flected, we said to ourseiveO, “wo opino that the
objectors to the Tirnes will bi found chiefly n-
mongs'. these who fear tq look upon theirown pic
ture and who stand in mve of tho editor’s unspar
ing satire and graphic delineations.” A papor
which can thus mnko oven sorrow wear a senile,
and folly fcol contemptible, in which nature tri
umphs over fashion, and wit is blended with in
struction, musj surely possess higher claims to
patronage thnu the vast majority of tho “wcek-
lys and dinrnals.’’ Take almost any other pa
per ; oven the Now York Mirror, which is cer
tainly an ornament and an honor to tlio country,
and owing cither to iho length of its leading arti
cles or to their gravity, you will scarcely be able
to read it through.; yet wo defy any one to break
upon tlio Spirit of tho Times without giving It an
extensive if not a thorough p'orusai. ' What is the
reason of this? It is owing entirely to the-influilc
diversity of its materials and the unrivalled viva
city that perVaticS the whole. In these rcSpcdts
it has po equal. Now York lias ever been distin
guished for ability among its newspaper editors.—
There is ho of the Commercial, tlio renowned co
lonel of clrivnlric memory ; ho wields a formi
dable peu, powerful, piquant and preflic—there is
also the old Major of the Star, a veteran in the.
field of fun, who liuth long boon cock of tho walk
among die wits—and now this new knight of the
ink-horo, the protean man of the Tima points
his “gray goose quill" and secnis cocked and
primed tor an editorial tournament with tho best of
thorn.. We long to witness a “keen encounter"
between these high-mettled blades. Such glad-
atonal exhibitions always delight us if limited
to tiie shedding of ink, and load not to venesection.
A “paper bullet of tlio bralii” is pleasant enough,
but not so a leaden one (Vdtri a rifle-percussion;
and a sharp round or two of intellectual “cut and
thrust" is nothing uncomfortable; but oh! how
soul-shivering is tho “cart and tierce" nfn spanikli
epring back. As for ourselves, wo had rather our
own paragraphs should have uo edge or poiut
at all, than that which is borrowed from the
knife; and would much prefer their passing off
without producing any noise than that which is
made by tho ignition of- “villainous enlt-pelre.''
O, ye phlebotomizing wits of tlio South, when
will you lenrn to quarrel without unger and bnltle
without blood ! But stop—this is wandering from
the subject. Wo wore talking about tho Now
York Spirit of the Times. Woll, -wo pronounce
that paper one of the cleverest, best got up, most
pleasing and graphic in tlio cduntry. Do yon dis
pute it? Then subscribe for it, and if ut-tbocrid
of tho year, you do not agreo with ns, “well give
it up.” Bo your palate what it may, yon will
meet with much to rcgalo it. Tho banquet is
composed of every vuricly iff dishes, all seasoned
with finest spices and die first champaign, and ho
who sits down to the ropust will be certain to riso
up satisfied. Are you a friend to merit ?—y ou
will find it defended. Are you a foe to vico and
folly 7—you will see them well clmstiso.1.—
Are you fond of literature and fino writing ? yon
will bo struck with its brilliancy and originali'y.—
In o word wo know of no way in which you can
lay out three dollars that would be likely to result
in a greater share of pleasure and profit than for
that pnpor; except it be for our own; pny for onrs
first—bo certain of that. . With us but one regret
now lingers after the perusal of tho Times, and
that is, that wo could catch nono of the Editors
genius—that amidst such a profusion of wit wo
wore not ublo to gather n single spark wherewith
lo enliven a brief and hasty notice of its merits.
