LINES FOUNDED ON A LATE PACT,
litis. Bridget Adair lived up one pair of .loirs,
In nolreot loading nut nfSoho j

Without being blnst with n beau;
But It happened ono May-tiny,—tho morning was fine—
Atld alto heard in l,or passage n tread |
It wnsjttst ns the clook of St, Ann’s had gone nino,
And Miss Bridget wasjitstottt of hod.
Tito tread it drew noarer—tho knocker it st'rr'd,
“ Whoso tltoro!” said fills. Bridget—a whisper wao
heard,
Of—" Rlodatn, l dio for yon l”
‘•What! for tna docs ho dio!” said tho lovo-otrickon
maid
To tlio glass as slta Imstlod in Imsto,
Slid ndjusted her gown—putnenpon Iter Itond,
And adorned with it rilihon ltor Waist.
Pit-n-pntwctit Iter Itonrt, as sho opened tlio door,
''And a stranger appeared to Iter view :
Stopping in witli a smile, nnd a how to Ilia floor,
IIo said u Aludnm I dio for you,”
If olio llkod Ills dtmtoanor, so courteous nnd meek,
, Yot his look was enough to ninnxo ltor)
For Ills fitoo appoarotl black ns unwashed for n wcok,
'And Ills board nskod tho aid of a razor.
At length Ita nddrossetl ltor, in litis killing strain—
" Miss Bridget 1 dye for you ;
And horn nre tho silksIvhiilt you spot mo to stain,

Ah Ilia! disappointed nnd nearly in tears,
Standing still with n gapn nnd n shire,
You would hardly hnvo thought, Ittid ynn known Iter for

’Twos the lovely Miss Bridget Adair. .

Awful Catastrophe.—The three story brick
building on tlio stmth elde of Canal street, und bet-
tween Comp and Magazine street, occupied ns tho
IMrnier’a Hotel aud kept by Charles Armstrong,
fell to tho earth last night nl half past two o'clock.
Repairs hnd lately been making in the lower sto
ry, titiil it is presumed tlrat too much of the sup
port hnd been incatiliously cut away.
Tho hotel wns occupied us mi eating arid lodg
ing house, and it is calculated, contained at tho
moment of the dreadful Occident between sixty
aud sovcniy inmates. Tlio billiard room, which
bad been very full till late nt night, had closed
only a short time before. A young gentleman
who left it hut a fow minutes before tlio fall of
tho buildings, states thnl he pnssed to tlio opposite-
sidu of the street, to his boarding liouso, went on
to the gallery iu front, where lie heard threo dis
tinct nnd loud cracks, rcso'mbliog the discharge of'
smnll oannoh then a sound like an earthquake, as
ilia mass fell, and for a moment after, one, and on
ly one, appalling cry, ns if by tho united voices of
the suilbrers! The ularm was directly given to
the citizens, the bells rung, and engipo companies
turned otit.
Number two distinguished herself again in tli0
enuso of hnmaaity. Dr. Campbell was imine-
dintcly on lira spot rendering surgical and medi
cal utd. At half post three o'clock about fifteen
of lira sulTurcrs bad been rescued from tho rubbish
uml saved.' Tho voices of ninny could be heard
under the crushed muss and when we left, to make
this brief notice hundreds of citizens were exerting'
themselves to extricate the mangled and bruised
bodies of the victims of this awful cnusuality.

LUCKY TOM.,
A secret worth RuowiNO.—Tom Spooner
was tho luckiest dog in the world, at least so said
his old cropies, ''lie began iiko a poor good for
nothing njeelranio,” thoy would say, without n
cent in tho world—without a whole shirt to his
back, half uphoo to his feet, and with nothingbut
his hands tp work with. And yet Tom, Spooner
isoqe of tho most woaltliy and influential men
among us. ” Wlrat n lucky dog Tom Spooiier has
been.” llowent among those who started in life
with him, list who wore now tho fruquentnrs of
a -shops—idlo and dissolute, by tho namo of
ky Toni. It puzzled his old friends not a lit
tle to account for bis luck, lie had no rich re
lations, and though not extravagant, ho was liber
al. “Hb was no skin-flint." Could ho Know somo
art of mngictlrat would unbosom tlio treasures of
tho earth, and spread its gold before hint J Ho
paid ho attention to the words of fortune-tollers,
and gold finders v Ira merely staid at home, and
yet his course iiad been attended ypar after yoar
and week after week with a wonderful share of
good fortune-good luck. Hb must bo lit posses
sion of some secret of which others arc ignorant.
What cau it bo! “What on oartli can it uo!" If
Tom had a lot of pork to dispaso. of, people Were
always willing to pay hint a couple of cents more
a pound than any other person 1 And the dug !
he was altvays lucky enough to pay his debts 1
lie was never so unlucky as to fbel- tlra grip of a
sheriff, or hear the creak of the jail-doos. Tom
married. "Why! this poor mechanic has taken
the sweetest and most beautiful girl in tlio place.
Who would hnvo thought it 1 What o confounded
lucky dog Tom Spooner is ! lie must liavo got
lira girl by nraglc~yes, nothing less than magic 1"
Ann then Tom’s^gnrdeo was o picture of neatness;
the fences wore never known to blow over, os did
