DEATH OF BISHOP WHITE.
The Philadelphia papers arc in mourning on
account nf the death of the venerable William
White. Bishop of the Episcopal D'tosces of Penn
sylvania. He is said to have been the oiliest Pro
testant bishop in tho world. From his vast ago
mid distinguished services ip tlte cause of Christian
benevolence, this most excellent tiuin has filled a
large space in tho a flections nf the American peo
ple. He was remarkable fur llie general kindness
of his action towards the professions of nil creeds,
and y when men nf high religious feeling und groat
toleration depart, wo regret their'loss with a pe
culiar pang. .
There is too much of the true spirit of religious
intnleralinn abroad in the lurid. 1 Religious contro
versies are becoming alarmingly violent, and one
faith is held up by the-others as obnoxious to the
cause of civil liberty.' We detest such bitter con
troversies, nnd always put them down to the score
of n bad and uneliarilablo spin!—come they from
what quarter they may, Truly then, do we la
ment that n light which shone with such n con
stant and meek flame, as that which has just been
quenched, has) departed. We trust his example
will linvo a proper influence upon |lic violent uud
biggoted of all professions.-—U.S. IfW.

In the Republican Herald of yesterday overl

would remain in thnt neighborhood for two or

him; Nevitt, nnd asked him what that item wilf,
pointing to the charge of $106., He said a hun
dred dollars for commission. T expostulated n lit
tle with him, but found him firm, mid I immedi
ately determined on pursuing tho course that
have in lire case, and I left the room in n short
time, without saying one word to him when 1 left.
He also stales that since lie received the note, he
had not laid eyes nit me. I have not been absent
from Columbus from tllnt lime toillus more than
three nr four hours at a lime, and almost every
dny 1 have passed op and down Broad street from-
two to n dozen times. I have seen him frequent
ly, ami l know he has not forgotten trie—but J
have never even passed the usual compliments
with him since tlte Dili of Juno, for I viewed him
just such n monster in human shape as I did not
care to have any thing in say or to do with. The
same day, that is, tire 9th June, I saw two nr three
individuals who were with Nevittl from this place
till they landed at Baltimore, who ktjew of this
business that Nevitt was to see to for me, whom
1 usUitd what they thought,Nevitt charged ms as
commission in the case, nnd not one or them said
more than 15 nr 20 dollars. I then told-tliern o,f
the charge, and they advised mo not to pay it. On
iMt evening one of mV friends told tne of-this
publication of Nevitt’s. 1 immediately left ray

that l.tlitl mil see him, bol I now reflect, autl re

und I will repay.
Io life third and last place, I was to notice this
man's belief of me, &c. &c. In'regard to my
honesty, those best acquainted with me know best,
and if j. 0, Nevitt does believe mo dishonest, that
does not make it go. In regard to. his pronouncing
me a base liar and n scoundrel, 1 call on him to
take it buck publicly or leave lire State, or I shall
proceed in the case agreeable to counsel, 1 am
