lumbus Guards, adopted at a late meeting,
expressive of timir thanks to me, for tho ni.*tfi
ner in which I discharged mV duties ns An
niversary Orator, on the 22d Inst, and solicits
a copy of iny Oration for publication. 1 re
gret, Gentlemph, that it is not in.my power
to comply With the wishes of the company,
and of yourselves, thus kindly made known
to me. The Address, of which you solicit a
copy, was composed in some haste, and was
■ever wholly Written out. So much of ii,
too, as was .committed to paper, immediately
after the delivery of it, war destroyed*— w
expectation existing with me that it Would b
honored with any lurther notice. .Should 1
attempt to furnish a copy frojn memory irvony
discrepancies must doubtless occur between
it and the original,. which might excite ob
servation, and possibly disappointment.-—
With all, I am just leaving town* lb be absent
for severul days, and cannot, apart from all
other difficulties, comply with the call you
have mode upon me without greater sacri
fices of Convenience than 1 otn sure the
company would desire me to make.
