A* that story ia all to so iulo the Northern
newspaper*, I might now at well uarrnte the
whole. Mr. White, with Mr. Butler, call'd
U|Min Gen. Jackson to induce him to recall
his order for more troops from Florida. The
old man, who is now very peevish, anti who
has been sorely vexed by this Florida war,
was in a storm of wrath at once. “ I will
not," he replied. 44 The people, of Florida
have been cowards," he continued : 4 * I wish
to God, the Indians had exterminated them,
eo that their wives might tnarry braver hus
bands, and raise up a braver race of son*.”
Mr. White ruggetted that even theTennessr-
aus had not b»*en able to do much. 44 It is a
d i — d lie," said the old man. 44 1 do not
mean to say this of you, but of those who
say any thing against them." At another
suggestion which came from Mr. While, that
want of provisions often compelled the Ten
nesseans even in face of an enemy to retreat,
the reply was—"this is ad —tier lie still."
* 4 Ood forgive ms forswearing,” he turned to
Mr. Butler and said, (Mr. B. belongs to the
church)—* 4 but them cowards provoke me
an," This story is now told in all the circles
of the city—and I hove ns much reason to
believe it, ns that Gen. Jackson opens his
house to-morrow fi»r the reception of compa
ny, aud offers all his visitors a nibble ut his
great cheese. Talk not then of VV ise and

L.NPAKALLLl.Ll) URAVEKY OF A WOMAN—AT
TEMPTED MIKDER.
One of the most daring acts of villiany
that has been recorded for some time past,
was committed in this county, on Thursday
night, I ho 4th ir.st., hv a negro fellow belong
ing to Mr. John Mathews; living five or six
miles south of this place. The outrage was
s<» great, the circumstances so revolting, and
the presence of mind, bravery. at.df-povjrs-
sion. activity, strength and skill of the lady
«»ii whom the murder was attempted to be
perpetrated, so uncommon, and almost so un
natural in woman, that we cannot forbear
giving all the circumstances ns related to us.
Mt. Mathews was absent fre m home, nud
bis wife, three Kina.I children and the negro
composed the family the night this demon
attempting to take the life of his mistress.—
Mrs. Mathews, unconscious of danger, was
attending to her usual business, when, early
in the night, a whistle was two or three times
heard at the window, the negro being in the
house wi*h his mistress, having just finished
making a large fire. [We will here remark,
that Mr. M. is said to hove a considerable
sum of money at present, nud there is scarce
a doubt but his negro, in partnership with
some other, cither white or black, hud made
a plot lo take the life ot Mrs. M. to get the
money.] When the whistle was heard, the

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2‘th, 1837.
Katijiq th« oio cueksk.—If I was call
ed upon to concentrate the doings of Con
gress—of the Cabinet—of the Serial©—of
the lLmse—of every hotly iu Washington,
for oue day, in oue word, I should any,
cheese. What! cheese? Yes, cheese!cheese!
cheese! The whole nation's Representa
tives have been devoted to—a cheese!—
Washington’s Birth Day baa been celebrated
by a cheese! You think your correspondent
a little 44 mod," perhaps ? Yo forty tbous-
aud gods of Athens, I invoke you all, if I
have not a right to be a little mad, when all
I hear, all I can see, ull I enn amell is, cheese,
rank, stinking cheese! Hear then what 1
have to say.
Undoubtedly you have heard that the
President has' been presented with a cheese
of 1400 pouuds. The White House wns
throwu open to day, and to day it wns to be
eaten. Two days ago the official Globe an
nounced the official fact! No sooner wns
this important fact announced, than all Con
gress, all the fashion, all the buouty, and the
intelligence of this, arid the surrounding ci
ties. were seized w*lh a phrenzy for this
cheese. Almost the first thing the Senate
did this morning was to agree to adjourn at
one o'clock, to go and eat the cheese. The
first thing the House did was lo begin to ad-
joura logo and eat the cheese—aud as the
House is such a lumbering mass, it can nev-
•r do what it would, until it is too late, and
therefore, ce*N not adjourn till 3 o’clock,
when all the ohee&a was eaten up; yet all
the House did was to talk of the big ship, and
the big cheese, cries of “order,” calls for ‘ad
journment,’ 4 ayes and noe.s,* ‘no quorum.'
“suspension of the rule"—the big ship and
the big cheese were all the House did, talked
of, thought ofdoing—and while less than a
quorum was left behind, who thus could do
no business, all the other members were off
eating cheese.
You think I exaggerate, perhaps / Exag
gerate ! it is not possible even if I were dis
posed. No pen driven by mortal hand can
even describe this scene. 1 went to the Pres
ident's House at half past one o’clock. At
one, the doors were open. A motley crowd
of all colors, from white anJ black and mul
atto to blue and speckled and yellow—of all
sizes from squalling children to six feet In
dians—from dashing woman to gartered
knight—of all trades from noisy coach dri
vers to sage law givers, were blocking up and
absolutely jaming the broad spread doors—
seized with this phrenzy for cheese, ami hav
ing learnt from long practice the art of edg
ing through a crowd. I reached the tables,
but alas ! unhappy me ! there was no cheese!
Fists-fulI were brandished on high. Hnnd-
kerchicfs-full dangled in the air. Hats-full,
(ves, hats full!) greased lousy heads—but
mid get the axe to defend themselves with, if
danger should approach them. He did so,
and placed it against the side of the house.
In a short lime, while Mrs. Mathews was
stooping to pick up something she had drop
ped, hecaught her by the neon with one hand
aud reached the other for Ids axe, swearing
he intended to kill her. She rose from her
stooping posture, broke his grasp, and threw
him so far from her by her quick motion
and strength, as to be able to get the axe
first, which she did, and fearing he might
take it from her, pitched it nut as far as she
cOuld in the dark, where she thought he
would hardly again find it. The negro think*
ing he could accomplish his demoniacal pur
pose without it, again rushed at Mrs. M.
with the intention of throwing her in the fire.
He threw her upon the hearth, but she juse,
as she says, with rtnewtd strength, and
strange as it may seem, threw him on the
floor. A scuffle forsomo minutes ensued,
when the negro rather gelling the advantage,
got her out of the house aud by hfir heir
dragged her some, distance in tho direction of
a pond, where he said he iulended <o drown
her. Having a gate or bars to pass through
she there once more regained her feet, aud
determined to make another struggle for her
life. He here thought of, and drew, a large
dirk knife frera Iris pocket, with which he
thought to despatch her. She saw it, and
immediately, fearlessly, and vigorously gras
ped it. Each endeavored to wrest it from
the other, iu which neither succeeded. She
finally, howevet, turned his own weapon
upon himself and although yet firmly grasp-
by each, she succeeded in cutting his throat.
Thus it ended. He supposed his life was
near enough ended, and left her. She im
mediately gathered up her children, aud set
out lor the nearest neighbor's, where she
gave the alarm and a search Ibr him was
commenced. YY'e learn, that he has since
been found, and that the wouud in the tlirout
is not severe enough to cause his death.—
Pity but it had been, for his life ought to be
taken by her hands.
The struggle lasted for a considerable
time, and we have given the particulars as
near as we can recollect them. If any er
ror is made in the statement, it is uninten
tional. Mrs. Mmhews certainly deserves a
a great deal of praise for her conduct.—
Where is the woman iu a thousand, that
would not, from the great alarm, havp stir
rendered her life immediately into the hands
of the demon? He told her, during the
fight, that lie had made a large fire for the
purpose of burning her and her children in
it that night, and at one time came very
near putting her in it. His life should be
ihe price.ofhiseonduci. N.Curoliu* pupei
there was nothing but crumbs left for miser
able me ! Mr. Benton was in one corner
expatiating upon cheese. Mr. Van Buren
was in another room smelling of cheese.—
The whole House was nauseous, rank, aye,
atiuking, (this is an English word in pretty
mouths over sea, and here imjKilite,) wi.h
cheese ! The whole 1400 pounds was gone!
Every body smolt of cheese. Women were
cheese. Mr. Webster was cheese. Mr.
Woodbury and his amiable lady were cheese.
Nobody talked ot any tiling or thought of any
thing but cheese. The music sounded—hut
the music was cheese. The ladies flirted
and flouted—but cheese, high and overpow
ering was the cheese, aud at Iasi the whole
mighty multitude retired, driven ofiT by the
cheese.

that endure, flash like the lightning; they
scorch the soul, but it is warmed tor ever.
Miserable man whose lovo rises by degrees
upon the frigid morning of his mind ! Some

he deems eternal sunshine. But then how

to forfeit and fling away all former hopes,

There are twenty-two theatres in London.
The nightly receipts of the King’s theatre,
average $d00. This theatre is now solely
confined lo the representation of Italian ope

always go in full dress. It was built at the
i ntense of 100,000 and rents for 8.000.—
The season annually commences towards
tho end of Februaty,* and ends in August.—
The theatre is open only three nights in tho
week. The expense of building Drury Lane
theatre was nearly 300,0001. It will ac
commodate upwards of 3000 persons. The
present rent is 6,0001 per annum. Covent

not quite so large as Drury Lane. The

1821. It is capable of accommodating a-
bout 1500 persons with comfort. The sea

The Olympic theatre is capable of contain*

It is not capable of containing more than
800 persons with comfort. Astley’s theatre
is large and commodious. About 2000 par

I he season begins at Eastor and ends in
September. The Queen's theatre is very
wmMlI, incapable of containing more than 800.
The Y^ictoriu theatre, (formerly the Cobutg.)

part of London, within the jurisdiction of the
Lord Chamberlain, without a licence from
him, and no new piece can be produced at
any of the theatres without the approval of
the dramatic censor. That office is now
held by Charles Kemble.

RightcoutncBS cxaltrth a Nation, but Sin it a re
proach to any People.
Notions, it ia said, liave nu souls; nml
iheroforu ,:re not accountable in another
world, for their sins iu this. Hut however
this may be, if not punished in their nation
al capacity, in a future stole, for the crimes
which 8tuined their history here, yet the ter
rain consequence of vice will closely follow
and inevitably overtake them : for vice is the
sure springing setftl of calamity ; and when
sown, even in sport, will most surely be
reaped in vengeance and iu wrath—as well
by nations es individuals.
Righteousness exalteth a nation: that is, by
the establishment of just and equal laws, by
a prompt and firm enforcement of them, the
confidence of all people in the perfect pro
tection ol person aud property is amply se
cured. Industry and enterprise is encour
aged, stimulated and excited to exertion, from
ilie lull certainty entertained that the fruits
of each man’s labor will be enjoyed by him
self and his hei(s; the products of industry
accumulate; the permanent improvement of
property goes on, increasing in result, in a ra
tio conespondiug with the increased invest
ment.
Rut sin is u reproach to any people: It
wastes away the moral energies of file. It
paralyzes industry. It saps the sources of
public revenue. It dries up the fountains of
public prosperity; and sooner or later it will
undermine the (nippiness of the most flour
ishing community.
No corrupt aud profligate state, con be
prosperous and happy. No abandoned and
vicious individual cun dwell iu the enjoy
ment of peace mid content. It is only by
following the precepts of virtue, by the prac
tice of industry, beneficence and frugulitv,
that any one enn assure to himself a life of
happiness, of peace ond tranquility.
The laws which are laid down in the Holy
Scriptures, fot regulating the conduct of
itiunkind, are tint the arbitrary impositions of
a despotic ruler, but are the merciful revela
tions of a benevolent Being, who, having
created all things, knoweth what uppertaiti-
eth to onr gond, and who bus kindly laid
down rules for the government of our con
duct: which, when carefully followed, will
