WARE-HOUSE AND COMMISSION
BUSINESS. 7
T HE undersigned have foru.ul aeppari^jershlp, un
der the firm of YONGE & BE AIL, lor tlie
transaction of a general Comm i o n aud Ware*
House business, at the old standVv'iu. P. Youge,
in Front street, opposite the new brick dwelling of J.
IL Shorter, Esq. They intend to devote their exclu
sive attention to the above business, tnd by strict at
tention thereto, hope to merit j and receive a liberal
share of patronage. When cotton is intended to be sold
immediately, they will make no charge for storage,
and will attend to tho sale of the same, if required so
to do. Haring a general acquaintance with the pur
chasers and a true situation of the market, they believe
that they can generally more than save the commission.
Their charges will be in conformity with the rates
rate? agreed upon by the ware-hou«e and commission
merchants. WM. P. YONGE,

with a whip; then there was such clapping
of hands, stamping of teet, and shouting c.t-
core, till at last the thing settled down with a
long and loud horse laugh. 1 stared nil round,
to (iud out what they wore laughing at, but
could see nothing but the man and the whip.
Thinks l to myself, I must either lack brains,
or these people wit; fbt 1 saw nothing worth
laughing at, when the uproar ceased. There
nest appeared a fine Geld oi' corn, with woods
aQd waters, and every thing as natural as life.
Presently, a whole lot of single men and danc
ing women came running out of the woods:
they danced, sang, and cut all kinds of capers
for near half an hour. This, I thought was
well enough, only tha lasses were their frocks
shorter than the fashion ; and the ladies had
no shawls on their necks, although it was win
ter. When I came otu, thinks I, this is uo
school for morality, and no place for young
men to sit; so I never went back.
At this time, (1791,) 1 don’t think there
w«ve six pianofortes in the city ; now, I sup
pose, there may be teu thousand. The lass
es were till better employed ; then they were
the trite yokefellows, always drawing equal,
helping and cheering their good men as they
trudged along with the cares and burthens of
life. The mother aud girls made all the
clothes in the family. No merchant tailors
and their five hundred dollar bills in those
days; no notes lying over. In fact, for the
first fifteen years I lived in New York, I nev
er heard of a protested note; hence I infer,
that the pressure in the money market is half
owing to playhouses and piano fortes; because
tlie solitary little playhouse at that time. I
don't think, would hold over three hundred
people; but now we have seven or eight play
houses, aud those so large as probably to hold
three thousand, each, I have heard that
thirty thousand dollars a week won’t support
the playhouses. Now, only to thiok how
many butchers and bakers’ bills might be paid
with this money! I heard of a man living in
a five story house, who oue day, while at din
ner, had the baker’s bill, amounting to tweo
is foremost.
