PRAIRIE PLANTATION FOR SALE.

timbered, and about Sgo will be iu cultivation the pres
ent year. The owner selected this body of land, spe
cially for his own use, before the Land Sales, when the
| rick region of the Choctaw Nation w-as unsold, and be-
i fore him, and having resided in the county several
I years previously, had acquired such a knowledge of
j the Lands as enabled him to make one of the Lestioea.
j tions in the Prairie. This plantation lias been settled
j five years, and if there lias been a case of fever a-
■ mong the negroes durin the time, the owner does ;
! not recollect it. Five hundred acres were planted in i
! Cotton last year, and notwithstanding the ravages of I
j worms, drought. Ac. produced 720.000 pounds seed
j cotton, from a close calculation, which at the present

structure with steps on sides, in lorni and
appearance, so far as the trees would allow us
to make ,t our, like the sides of a pyramid.—
Diverging fiom the base, and working out
way tnrough the thick woods, we came upon
a square sloue column, about fourteen feet
high and three feet on each side, sculptured
in very bold re),ef, and on all lout of thesides
from the base to the top. The front was the
rigtue of a mao curiously and richly dressed,
and the face, evidently a portrait, solemn,
sier», and well ftued to excite terror. Thu •
back was of a J flerent design, and unlike any
ihing we Lad ever seen before. Thesides-
were covered with hieroglyphics.—This our
guide calk'd an “ Ido!;” aud before it at a dis
tance of three feet was a large block of stone,
also sculptured w ith figures and emblematical
devices, v. hid; he called an altar. The s.'ght of
this unexpected monument put at rest atoucc
and forevei, in our minds, ail uncertainty in
regard to the character of American antiqu
ities, and gave us the assurance that the ob
jects we were in search of were interesting,
nut only a.; the temains of an unknown peo
ple, but as works of art, proving, like newly
discovered historical records, that the people
who ocenpied the continent of America were
not savages.
