1 \NKEK Mode of Testing Courage.—It
is well known that in the time of the old*
French war much jealousy existed between,
the British and Provincial officers. A Bri

Puluatn instead of giving him a direct answer,
requested the pleasure of a persona! interview,
with the Major. He tame to Putnam’s tetlr,.

smoking his pipe, and demanded what com

“ What you know,” said Putnam, “I’m bug
a poor miserable Yankee, that, never fired a.
pistol in my life, and you must perceive
that if we fired with pistols you have a due
advantage of me. Here are two powdee-
kegs ; 1 have bored a hole, and inserted a slow
match in each; if you will be so good as to-
seat yourself there, I will light tL&matches,
and he who dares to sit the longest without
squirming, shall be called the bravest fellow..”
The tent was full of officers and, men, who.

their laughter to squul. The signal was given,
and the matches lighted; Putnam contiu4W>6l

matches—but the British officer, though a
Grave tellow, could not help casting longing
and lingering looks downwards, and his ter
rors increased as the length of the matches*
diminished. Thespectators withdrew, onesy
one, to get out of the way of the expected ex

inch of - the keg, the Majot, unable to endure
longer, jumped up, and drawing out his match,
cried out, “ Putnam, this is wilful manli-t;
draw out your match; I yield.” “My dear

hurry, they’re nothing but kegs of onions!”

ANiMAL MAGNETISM.
The excitement on the subject 1 of animal 1
magnetism does not seem to abate in Boston.
The Post of Wednesday morning contains
the following paragraphs :
Animal Magnetism—Result favor
able to Pit. Coi.lyeb.—Yesterday after
noon, ilte committee held their fifth tneeiing
in the Temple. The member opposed to.
Dr. Collyer's theory objected to having any
more experiments attempted upon the regu-
(.!;■ subjects, Frederick and Sarah, on the
ground that they suspected collusion to ex.-
ist between them and Dr. C. It was then
proposed that he should try an experiment
ou a gentleman present, who was a stranger
io die Ltoctoi, but not to some tnembets of
the committee, The opponents of Dr. €-
said they would be satisfied, with successful
experiments ou this gcutleinan, as they had
fqll confidence in his intelligence and in.-
tegrily.
Dr. C. then commenced the magnetizing
operation, and put the gentleman to sleep,
and kept him in that state for upwards of an.
hour. Whilst asleep he caused thesnbject’s
fingers to move, and hands to tremble, by
holding his own fingers over them, and'alsil
by holding a natural magnet over them-—
After various other experiments, Dr. C. by
the reyers'e process, awakened thegentleman.
At the close of the business the following
resolve was passed unanimously.,
‘ Resolved, That while this committee re
frain from expressing any, decisive opinion as
to the science or principles of animal mag
netism, they freely confess that in the experi
ments of Dr.. Gollyer, certain appearances
have been presented, which cannot be ex
plained on the supposition of collusion, or by
a reference to any physiological principles,
known to them.’
