THE LATE STORM
Tht Baltimore American *ay« n slip from
tbuNotfolk Herald under date of the 15th
toefont, 3 o’clock, P. M. taya :
The gale of laat week waa more terrible
and disastrous io its effects on the coaat. than
we had any idea of. Thie will be aeen by the
following atatement from a gentleman who
had melancholy evidence of iia violence. A
number of veaaela in diatreaa are reported off
the capes by pilots who have come up; and
upon a representation of the fact to Commo
dore .Wilkinson, in command at the Navy
Yard, he immediately ordered the U. S.
steamer Engineer to be got ready and pro
ceed to their relief.
A letter dared Old Point Comfort, and

At one o'clock, P. M. precisely, the Tale-
graph Line was connected through the whole
distance from New York to Buffalo, passing
through the following stations, vis: Troy,
Albany, Utica, Syracuse, Auburn, Roches
ter, Buffalo, being a total distance of 507
miles.
Upon turning the adjusting screw of the
magnet by Prof. Morse, all things were found
right, and Professor Morse sent hit compli
ments to all the operators on the line.
The first to answer was Albany.

time wh«*n 'he tempest wras driving her with
terrible speed upon the breakers. The wind
•t this moment changed, and drifted tie away
towards (he northwest. She lost her bow

various places by coming in contact with the
schooner Imperial, Capt. Reid, from Phila

One poor sailor had both legs badly broken,

The schooner's cargo was worth about

The schooner Walter R. Jones, from up

Another gentleman reports four vessels lost,

We observe by 1 lie “Old North State"

storm was also fell in that vicinity with grtv.t
severity. Trees were uprooted, and chim

some ten or twelve feet, and the bridges on
the ruad were nearly all carried away.
OENERAL TAYLOR IN EUROPE.
The Richmond Enquirer publishes the
following extiact from a letter to a gentleman
in Richmond:
Madrid. July 23d, 1816.
Taylor’s victories have been Jell more here,
in Europe, even than at home. For two
weeks (between the sailing ot (lie steamers)
our suspense w.is great ; but, when the news
did cmne each, American strutted nut as
large as life. The papers were sorely used
longer separated- they talk to each other by |
lightning.
This entire dialogue occupied somewhat
less than five minutes.
Valuable Invention.—By a machine j
invented for the purpose, a good quill is cut
into some thirty or forty “mbs,” or prrfect
pens, about one quarter the size of the usual
steel pens. One of these is inserted into a
holder, and the writer has sit once si peifect
quill pen, admirably prepared for writing and
equal to the best pen of former days. These
mbs are pul up in boxes of one giosscach.

LATEST FROM THE ARMY.
The arrival of the steamship Telegraph brings the
latest advices from the army.
On the 6th Gen. Taylor crossed the 9an Juan, and
on the 7th took up the line of march forSeralvo. where
Gen Worth had baited his command. Hay’s regi
ment from China were to arrive at Seralvo to join the
army there. Gen. Taylor, in his march, is prepared
lor any erne-gency—either an advadee or n retreat —
He permitted no soldier or officer to take more bag-
g igc with him than he can conveniently carry on hit
ua< k. AU the supplies for the advancing army, so far,
have been sent on by park mules, and the General ex
pects to have JO Jays provisions for II1000 men at He-
ralvo when he reaches it. The general impression is
that lie will there make a halt and not advance further
till he has advices from Washington. The troops now
on the road between Carnargo and Monterey number
near 12,000. None were suffered ti go but such as
were nhle and willing to stand tho fulighes of o long
march. This had the effect of reducing considerably
the Volunteer Regiments: few of them exceeded .**00
strong—many of them numbered even leas. These
Regiments arc: one from Tennessee, one from Mis
sissippi, one from Kentucky, one from Ohio, one from
Tex ts, (Hay s) the Baltimore battalion, a part of the
Texan Irifantry, reorganized, and McCulloch’s and
Gillespie's Rangers.
Tiiere were near 600 sick volunteers in the hos
pitals at Carnargo, and they were dying very fast.—
$o many were sick that it required neur a whole
regiment to attend to them. Those whom the Ten-
nesseeane lelt behind seemed particularly unfortunate,
fo r they had to call on the Alabamians to attend the
liviti' and bury the dead. Aa fust as these men get
able to leave the hospital they are discharged and
sent home. In fact. Gen. T. shows a disposition to
discharge all volunteers who are discontented and
wish to return io their homes. Though the number
of patients in the hospital at Mutnmoros is larger than
at Cam • '■go. tlic mortality is greater at tho latter
piece—near 3 to 1.
A per* in who has visited tho hospitals at tho dif
fere lit posts, hns said that if one halt of the northern
a id western volunteers who went to the Rio Grande
•re effective men on the 15th October, it is more than
he looks for.
Gen. Ratiersoti has been left in command of nil the
country from Carnargo to the mouth of the l iver, mid
he has been instructed by Gen. Taylor to issue an
older prohibiting the entrance of strangers into the
river and at Carnargo.
Gen. Butler was the man Gen. Taylor d
leaving in command of the lower country, hut
tersou did not reach Carnargo as soon as waa expect
ed, the order of things waa changed. Gen. P. ta rep
resented as being very much mortified at not being
allowed to accompany the advance.

Gctt. Taylor left for Montery on the fitli. The
of the StaAi and other invited guests, took dinner
the Col. Crons, twenty-two in all, being invited by the
whole-souled ('apt. J. A. Pralt. When dinner was
over, they commenced iheir miiruii towards the Aryiy.
Next day, Limit. French returned fur more sminufii-
tiou, a report having readied the Genornl that Sunia
Anna was on his march for Monterey with 15.000
men, and that nil iheir forces were on the march to
concentrate at Monterey,lo give the General n warm

force has gone, about B000 in all. Col. Baker will

been extensively used in the above diseases with such
i distinguished success, that the proprietor of the reci
pe has been induced to offer it to the public in ite
present form, in the hope thnt it may be the mean* of
