TIIE TREATY WITH MEXICO.
Evory one ia interested, of course, to know wlmt
torrilory wo acquire by virtue of tlio treaty now
ponding. According to the line reported in the
Journal* ns tho one laid down in the treaty, the
newly-acquired province* arc alone sufficient to
form an empire of large dimen»ions, and, when
given up by Mexico, will leave her but little more
than half of wluitHho claimed before Texas was
loti.
If we understand, by the Texas t°iritory this
side tho Nueces, then we assign to it tin area of
200.000 square miles; but if we consider it as
embracing nil on this side of tho Rio Grande, then
it contained 307,318 square miles. Mexico claim
ed all within both limits, and considers that, hy
tlio treaty in hand, site cedes to the II States the
100.000 square miles of territory called Texas—
that is to say, she cedes according to her view or
the carp—

Tho whole territory of Mexico, including Tex

THE NATIONAL SENTIMENT.
The speeches of Messrs. Wlntlirop, Hudson,
Holmes, Vinton and McDowell, of the House, and
of Messrs. Davis and Benton, of the Senate, up
on the denth of Mr. Adams, must have gratified
the feelings of every friend of tho venerable dead,
and ovory truo son of Massachusetts. Whore
all were so good It would he hardly fair to speak
of one in higher terms than of another; but wo
particularly pleased with tho warm, glowing
anti eloquent tribute spoken bv Mr. Holmes, of
No’.ith Carolina. Wo nave seldom, if evor, read
any eulogy more appropriately conceived, or one
which enrried a higher moral appreciation. It
was honorable to the Slates of South Carolina
and of Massachusetts, and honorable to the illus
trious deceased and to Mr. Holmes. We feci it to
be a privilege lo have this op|mrtunity to step out
from within the narrow confines of the party poli
tics of the day, and to take, as it wore, by tlio
band gentlemen like Holmes, McDowell, and Ben
ton, and to tell them that tlieirgenerous sentiments
are appreciated and returned by the peoplo of this
ancient Commonwealth. Such scenes as those
witnessed in the Henntc and House, on this occa
sion, speak well for our country, our public men,
and give us higher and bettor notions of our com
mon humanity. They show that nmid nil tho
strifo and tmnult of party warfare, there remains
yet beneath all a hidden fountain of manly sym
pathy nml generous regard tor high tulent, emi
nent public service, and private worth, whicli can
not always lie repressed; it must gush forth at
times, and when it does, it refreshes nnd strength
ens our good impulses, and gives new birth to bet
ter feelings.
Wo buliovo thnt one good which wo derive from
tho death of the righteous public servant, is the
opportunity which it gives to tho expression of
sentiments of broad national patriotism, making
its feel that wo are one people. It libomli/.OH pub

tained that that magnificent store nnd its contents
would lie destroyed. It originated from a defect
in one of tlio flues of tlio furnace with whicli the
various show rooms are heated. While a number
of ladies were in the second story examining some
goods Uie flames burst out,and in an instant the ut
most confusion prevailed, and before alarm could

smoke, and great difficulty was experienced in sav

Tiie Baltimore American publishes the follow,
ing extract from a letter received by a gentleman
of that city, hy tlio last steamship, from a relative
in England, a colonel in the British army:
*■ Wlmt n glorious time Gen. Scott haa had of it.
Taking an interest in his movements, I have watch
ed hit accounts of the same, and never reader
heard of a conquering army so clear of excess or
barbarity as that of America, uuder his and ether
general officers in command. One thought haa
often struck inc, and is often uppermost in my
iiiiml. It is, that America will sooner or later be
the great einporium of the world, and ntpertede
England. This country, owing to its expensive
government, and extravagant way of conducting
it, will be overloaded with taxes, and the shameful
neglect of Irolaud, which has been bronght to tho
last extremity of distress from mis-government,
will lie an everlasting stain on the history of Eng
land. They know not how to govern it.

A Mousing Politician Caught m me own
Thai' There is an amusing anecdote about Gen.
Cass going tlio rounds of tiie press, and which is
miile likely to be literally true. It is stated that
tnc President sent the treaty with Mexico to the
Senate, with tho approval ot himself and Secreta
ry of Stato in writing. Tho Senate went into ae,
cret session to consider the peace proposals, and af
ter an hour or two thus spont, the doors were open
ed, and Gen Cass at once gave notice that he would
call up tiie Ten Regiment Bill, and hoped the Sen-,
ate would act upon it without further delay. It
was intimated that tho peace proposals obviated
any action, at least any hasty action on the bill.
Mr. Cass said the Senators on his side were of o-
pininn thnt “ to halt now in our military operations
would bo fatal"—that there was more necessity
limn ever for passing tlio bill—that supposing a
Treaty had been mado, it had not boon ratified, and
Mexico might lie inclined to reject it, being an un
stable govemmont—hereto day, and gone to mor
row—"that me ought to make a powerful demonstra.
tiun, to have its eject in driving them into a Trea
ty"—that there need bo no expense incurred or
troops raised.
At tliis particular crisis of the debate, Senator
Mangum urose with an impressive manner and eats
neatness of spooch, and brought the military chair
man to a halt, hy raising a point of order.
Mr. Cuss, supposing Tie was called to order for
. refurring to subjects pending in Becret session, re
marked that" ho trusted ho should be allowed the
privilege," as others had been Indulged.
Hereupon Mr. Mangum, with great gravity, in
formed tho Senator that lie had entirely mlsanpre-
bended tiie point of order. The point Is, (said Mr.
Mangum raising his voice) whether the gentleman
was not giving “aid and comfort to the enemy,” by
proclaiming hero that we should make nmnoeifitl
demmstratiim with a view lo frighten the Mexi
cans into a Treaty; for hi* remarks may be pub
lished and may reach tho earn of the Mexicans,
and thus defeat Ihc object sought by the "gome tf
brag."
The scene is described as ludicrous and affect
ing. Tho Chairman of the Military Committee
was spcchluss, so hard had he ran his need against
the wall; whereupon the Senate being 'peculiar
ly, and powerfully excited,' on motion ol Mr. John
son promptly a^/uumed [N. O. Bee.
