Wo take it that the political “ upper teo H of our op-
pononte ore a hard aet of cnotomera to please. In
1840, and iu fact ever aince, a certain act of very
truthful and overly decent poNticiaue haa made it a
buBinem to abuse the Whigi for their fiddling and rev
elry , noise and confnaiou, during the ever memorable
cauvaa of ghat year. Now the tune ia changed; aud
a meeting of the frieuda of Gen. Taylor is ridiculed
for ita deoeucy, aud upbraided for uot disturbing the
city with unueces»ary and unbecoming vociferations.
Old Zack hns never been remarkable himw'lf for blow-
ing hie own trumpet aud kicking up a row, uulees wheu
duty required a noise, but wheu ho Kir wuked the
thunder tones of the fray, few have be«n able to stand
the ccufusion of his feaiful onset. IIis friends, iu sup
porting him, will follow his example. As yet thvy
have scarcely found an enemy strong enough to pro
voke their wrath, or call iu exercise their dormant pow
er. Iu the north and northwest the democracy, almost
in mass, are flocking to the standard of Van Buren ;
aud here, in the South, thousands of th**m nrsrullying
to the baiiuer of Old Rough nad Ready The Whigs,
however, kuow full well the adversary with which they
have to coutond. They know full well that every spe
cies of fraud, and forgery, and fukehaod, will be brought
to bear in the contest; tint a hundred thousand office
holderm, barked by the pluudered spoils of the country,
are openly in the field, and iuteud to die iu the lust
ditch, or defenl the election of an houest man to the
presidency.
The contest is, strictly speaking, between the spoils

Bet'vccu the ticket, now before the people of

I calculate on giving my vole and feeble aid to the

who ia my choico for itie first office within the

ting for Mr. Fillmore, for the Vice Presidency, i*
imposed on mo lit/ a regulation beyond my control.
Could I consult my own feeling*, I would vote
for Gen. Taylor and Gen. Butler, but thia liberty,
according to the prevent arrangement of tee elec
toral tickets, ia denied me.
Mince the date of my letter which haa been al
luded to by the paper* above spoken of, I have
made several epceches in favor of Gen. Taylor,
but not in the capacity of Elector, and never un
til Tueaday last, in a public diacuuton at Calmw-
ba, have I raid any thing, ormly, about Mr. Fill
more. I believe him, however, to be a man of
high honor, of great integrity, and of command
ing talents.
The remaining an Elector, under the circum
stance* by which I find my*elf surrounded, ia
with me a matter of volition, and if I were con
tinued on the ticket and the friends of Gen. Tay
lor ahould prove successful, with the Information
I possets on the *nbject, I should, without hoai-

but at the mine lime would reaerre to myatlf Ike
right to rote for Mr. Fillmore or not, 04 f might
hereafter, on a full examinaliem into hie public
nett and declarations, determine him to be sound
or unsound on Ike new territorial queetiem.
I greatly prefer that some other person ahould
be selected aa Elector, in my place. It iu a sta
tion which I at no time have sought, and I would
not be the inurnment to produce discord among
the .upportere of Geo. Taylor, on Ita question
of the Vico Presidency, either in this Stole or in
any other portion of the Union. Again, I ham
not the time to spare from my proteraional en
gagements which ought to be devoted to a can
vass oo important in its character, and which ap
pears to be eo little understood by the great body
of the people. ,
For them Masons I most respectfully decline
the post of Elector on the Taylor and Fillmore
ticket, hoping at the same time that Gen. Taylor
may succeed in ilia aspirations, and that the coun
try may ham tee benefit of his services aa Presi-
