wore prepared to seo delegations from the adjoin
ing comities marching in with music and banners
in some considerable display; but you can imagine
our disappointment, when, after waiting until near
darken the evening before, the usual quietude ofour
village was not disturbed hy the arrival of a single
delegation. We did learn that some Itcelve mm
had arrived within a short distance of the village
and encam|HMl, not daring to make nn exhibition of
themselves in broad und open day light; this was
the Lee county delegation. (Their modesty should
be appreciated.) This we thought an unnropi-
tious beginning, hut still supposed that probably tno
warmth of the day, or some other cause, might
have produced some delay in their marches, and
that th»» morning’s dawn would usher intoour midst
a crowd. The morning arrived, but nothing more
of n cheering character to tho prominent demo
crats about our town, who hy this time Lef an to
show considerable sic us of chagrin and disappoint
ment. About ten o’clock, the democrats of tlie
county, with a sprinkling’of Whigs, began to ar
rive in “ numbers few.” A delegation from Baker
came in about this time, numbering all told, about
twenty, and w • were informed, from a democratic
source, that il required thn active exertions of sev
eral of tho most influential democrats in Baker
county (who had specially engaged themselves in
that business for several days previously,) to induce
that nutnlier income. This looks rather hud for
the cause of (’ass and Butlorin that county, which
has boon termed tho Democratic Gibraltar of tho
2d District. At eleven o’clock, about which time
we supposed the speaking would commence, wo
visited the stand erected for that purpose, nnd there
found the lion. Marshall J. Wellborn, tlieir stand
ard hearer, Judge Iverson, E. R. Brown, Esq., of
Sumter, and James M. Mitchell, Esq., of Stewart,
the speakers to whom was confided the honor of
expounding the democratic faith for the day. After
tho crowd had all assembled, which at no time
during the day, including Whigs, Democrats,
women, children, nnd negroes, nnd much the largest
portion of il wore composed of women, children,
and negroes, amounted to more than twelve hun
dred. It was announced that the hall would lie
opened hy a speech from Mr. Mitchell of fifteen or
twenty minutes’ length; we thought nt tho time
this was doing the Colonel great injustice, but after
he Imd made a speech, regardless of tho “ gag”
placed upon him, of more than an hour’s lengm,
much to the annoyance of the *• knowning ones,”
and particularly to tlieir “ worthy president of tho
day, and exhorter. 1 saw tho wisdom of tho re
striction, and that it would alone huve been dic
tated by an ardent desire to promote the democrat
ic cause. I would advise tho Colonel that before
lie attempts to make another democratic speech,
he consult a little inure tho textbooks of his
political faith; all that tho Whigs have to sny
about it is, that he gave us a “few more of the
same sort.” Next lit order came Judge Wellborn,
the democratic nominee, whoso name was announc
ed with quite a flourish of trumpets by the “ worthy
president” of tho day, but whose appearance op
the stand was not greeted hy a single demonstra
tion of applause or satisfaction by the monger
rowd assembled. But few of us ever having had

evident signs of disaptHiintinoiit, and we
begun to breath much more freely, seeing that
Gen. '1 iiylor and onr principles Hlood in no earthly
danger of a demolition at his hands. Tho Judgo
set out hy referring to the notice which had been
taken of his “ Paris boots,” went into a long de
fence of Free Trade, attempting to show the ap
plicability of the illustration made by him with tho
bools, and consumed the greater part of his time in
replying to an nrticle in the last Enquirer, and to
which ho said he had replied through the Deino-
crat and Times. Tho Judge attempted to be very
severe upon the Editor of tho Enquirer, denounced
the article alluded to as being a calumny upon liiiy,
cliurg. d tho editor of being ungrateful in* not re
ciprocal ing in a spirit of kindness the many pe
cuniary favors shown by him to the editor. Such
wore the principal, if not the only points discussed
by the learned Judge, in a speech of some two
hour’s length, and during thodelivcry of which there
whs not a single demonstration of enthusiasm made

am satisfied, from the slight attention paid to thn
Judged tiring his speech, and from other indica
tions ol mioasiiivsH pro valent among tho Demo-

when ho concluded, nml I think there was not it
single candid and unprejudiced mail who heard
him, whether lie Ik? Whig or Democrat, but will
freely admit that hn gained no laurels for himself
on that occasion, cither hh a politician or as a pop
ular speaker; nnd that he fell far, very far short
of sustaining his previous reputation. One thing
ia certain, that it will require something more con
vincing and powerful than anything t hut fell front
the Judge on that day, to make tin impression to the
detriment of the glorious cause of Taylor and the
Constitution in Randolph.
The Judge having concluded, the assembly, ir
