by the last Legislature, it becomes our duty to meet and
take counsel together, as between friends ami citizens
of the same county, and subject to the same destiny ;
and prepare to discharge our duties faithfully and fear
lessly, in this important crisis in the history of our coun-
try.
Resolved Therefore, 1st. That we wish nil our fellow-
citizens in every part of the county, to unite with us in a
Convention to he held at Newton, on the lay of
for the purpose of selecting two candidates to he
Voted for as delegates to represent this county, in the ap
proaching Convention.
2d. We believe that neither the honor or interest of
this State at this time, nor the peace and happiness of
her citizens require a dissolution of this Union, and we
will oppose by any and all honorable mentis, the election
of any one as a delegate to said Convention, who advo
cates either disunion or secession as a remedy for pres-
ent evils; or who refuses to come out openly, candidly
and unreservedly, and pledge himself, if elected, to op
pose nnv and all measures which may come before tho
Convention, proposing as a measure of redress for what
has transpired, to sever the connection between this
State and the General Government, or establishing a
Southern confederacy, instead of the Constitutional
Union of these States.

nate candidates to represent the county of Baker, in
Convention to be held in December next.
Mr. Strozier moved to lay the substitute for the whole
proceedings,on the table, which was carried

port, and it was adopted.
On motion, the blank was filled in the resolution, fix
ing the time of the Convention at New ton, on the first
Wednesday in November next.
On motion the meeting adjourned.

upon me, and desired that I as Secretary, would sub
stitute the resolution below for the second resolution in
the majority report, in my official report of the proceed
ings of the meeting, which I refused upon the ground
that the report had not been Amended by a vote of the
meeting, but ns an act of justice to Co). Tift, I can
state that in bis defence of the second resolution, of the
majority report, he expressed himself against Disunion
ns a remedy, for any thing that has transpired, nnd in
favor of the Convention confining itself to '‘constitution
al measures.*’ and in his speech proposed to me to altqr
the 2"d resolution of the majority report* so as to read—
“ Resolved, That the measure of redress prescribed
by the Convention, should be within the pale of the
Constitution; in the opinion of this meeting a dissolu
tion of the Union, should lie made the remedy for griev
ances, only when all other remedies prove ineffectual “

At a meeting of the citizens of Randolph county,
held at the Court-house on the lfitli inst., for the purpose
of taking into consideration, means and m
preservation of the. Union, and for the
other business relative to the same.
On motion, John Hendrick, Esq., w
chair, and Edmund IV. Hodges, Esq., w
act a- Secretary.
On motion, the Hon. W. Taylor explained the object
of the meeting.
On motion of W. C. Perkins, F.sq , the Resolutions
adopted at a meeting of the “Union and Southern
Rig ills” party in the county of Bibb, was adopted,
nnd a committee of thirteen was selected by ti e chair,
to present the names of lour suitable persons, as candi
dates for Delegates from this county to the Convention
called by the Governor:

Brown, II. L Taylor. R. OTnnner, W. Coleman, G.
Smith, D. B. Chambers, J. W. Oliver, T. Jester, A.
Ba^s. A. Brown, B. II. Perkins and W. Harrison.

mously request Col. A. M c l)o u<* ald to address it, and
the Clmir appointed Col. J. E. Brown, Hon. W. Taylor
and Eugene Douglass, Esqrs., us a committee to wait
on anil make known to him the request, which they did.

the meeting for a short time, and entertained them to
their great pleasure nnd satisfaction, upon the issues be
fore the country.
The committee of thirteen made their report, and
selected the

H. G. JOHNSON, Esq., B. H. RICE, Esq.,
as candidates for Delegates.
On motion of W. C. Jenkins, Esq., the meeting unan
imously ratified the nominations, and each nominee ac
cepted and pledged hinself to go for the preservation
ol the Union, and to oppose all measures and means that
w ill either directly or indirectly tend to destroy it.
On motion of Capt. Muhin, the proceedings of the
meeting was requested to he. published in the Columbus
Enquirer, and all other papers in the State.

Mail Robbery.—Three pouches of mails, made

The Crescent City arrived at New York this
morning, from Chagres, with San Francisco dates
to the 1 ith September. She bringa three hundred
and forty passengers, and over a million in gold.
There was no Cholera at Chagrea at tbe time of
the departure of the Crescent City.
The steamer Tennessee arrived nt Panama on
the 4th ultimo, with a million of dollars in gold,

The Slave Law.—Mr. Crittenden, the U. S.
Attorney General, haa published on opinion, pro
nouncing the Fugitive Slave Law perfectly con
stitutional.
The New-York Cotton Market was firm yester
day, 700 bales sold at unchanged prices. Flour
haa declined six cents per bbl. ltice unchanged.
Provisions firm. Sugars are depressed. Coibe,

Herry Clay at Home—Orand Reception.—
Tbe Hon. Henry Clay met with a noble reception
on bis arrival home. Tbe Lexington Obeerver
says:
Ho arrived about 9 o’clock, amidst the firing of
cannon, the ascent of rockets, and the blase of
bonfires. He had choaen to come in the night to
avoid all public demonstration, but, aabe stud, in
substance, in the few remarks be made to the vast
concourse which greeted him on Ms arrival, the
friendship of his neighbors was ton vigilant for
all his precautionary steps.
When be descended from his carriage three
loud and long continued cheer* went up mm the
immense multitude who had gathereffm front of
the Phmnix Hotel. In a few momenta he appear
ed upon the balcony, and briefly addneeed the
