Once upon a time, during a debate in the U. S.

painted warriors dead upon the field; and the
town of Hadley was thus saved front conflagra

and heartfelt congratulations; than followed
thanks and praise to God, nnd then (lie deliverer

or two among the people could have told who lie
was, hut they prudently hold their penco.
Amid Itiu douse forests and mighty rivers of-
America, the stern piety of tnc Puritans Imd ac
quired an imaginative cast, almost unknown in
the mother country; nml thus, unuhlo to account
for thu sudden disappearance of the delivering
stranger, tho people of Hadley believed that ho
was an angel sent from God, in unswer to their
prayer, to rescue them from the henthon enemy.
With tho traditions of the Indian war of 1675,
that belief bus been handed down to our own day ;
and it was only a few years ago, on tho hanks of
the pleasant Kunneboc, that a fair descendant of
tho redoubtable Captain Church rotated to the
writer tlio foregoing legend ns un indisputable in

"Spiritual Knocking*.”—A chance for Believers.

bility at least of such phenomena, although of late
lor somo reason, these notices have been fnrloss
frequent than formerly.
I havo had a good deal of experience in these
matters, nml knowing the "raps” to he the worst
of imposturos, it seems high time tlmt (hey should
como to an cud, if any one tests (ho matter, eithor

The ridicule and distrust with which the expla-
nntWi of llto" Buffalo Doctors,” as you term them
was received two years ago, were not warrant
ed hy any circumstances or facts connected with
tho case, and iltoso who have carefully oxamined
into their matter know, that their explanation was
true. It is easily tested. Hundreds of persons
aro known to produce tho same identical sounds
in tho precise manner thus pointed out ;and whore
persons tiro ignorant of their truo source, thoro is
hii air of supurnaturaliicsN, as ir. thoso produced
hy the Eox family.
As to "Spiritual writings,” so called, they are
simply cases of sclf-dolusion; if any person is
credulous enough to believe that a person's hand,
in writing, is moved by tho spirit of some deceased
person, instead of his own volition, lot him cher
ish his delusion ; only let a guardian be appointed
to look alter his oilier affairs. As to table-mov

phenomena exist, of which I have no proof, satis
factory to my own mind,) I presume, now believes
that they are caused by deceased spirits.

chair in extreme despondency, "1 knew it wou!4
come to that at last. I have always tho’t that
something had would happen to me—that I should
do something vory wrong—kill somebody in a mo
ment of passion, perhaps; but I never imagined
that I could bo mean enough to bo guilty of de
liberate larceny.”
u But there .nay bn somo mistake, Judge 1”
" No mistake, Polly. 1 know very woll how it
catno about. That fellow Stcrritt, keeps tho
meanest kind of liquor and always did—liquor
mean enough to nmkoa man do any sort of mean
thing. I have always said it was mean enough
to make a man steal, and now I have a practical
illustration of tlte fact t”—and the old man burst
into tears.
" Don’t ho a child!” said hia wife, wiping away
the tears; "go like a man to Slorritt—toll him it
was u little bit of & frolic—pass il off as a joke-
go and open court, and nobody will ever think of
it again.”
A little of the soothing system oiwrated upon
the Judge as such things usually do; his extrema
mortification was finally subdued, and toSterritl’s
he went with a tolerable face. Of course he had
but little difficulty in settling with him fot, atlda
from the fact that the Judge’s integrity waa un
questionable, ho had un inkling of tjie^ joke that
Imd been pluyed. The Judgo took his seat in
court; but it was observed that ho waa sad and
melancholy, and that his mind frequently wander
ed from tho hiisinos* bo fore him. There wa» a
lack of the sense nnd intelligence that usually
characterized his proceedings.
Several days pass,id away and the businoM of
court waa drawing to a close, when, one morn
ing, a rough looking sort of a customer was ar
raigned on a charge of stoaliug. After tlio clerk
had read the indicmetil to him, he put tho ueaal
question:
"Guilty or not guilty ?”
44 Guilty—but drunk," answered the prisoner.
"What’s that plea?” exclaimed tlio Judge,
half dozing on the bench.
44 lie pleads guilty, but says he waa drunk,"
replied the clerk.
“ VVhnt’s the charge ugrtinst tho man ?”
44 He is indicted for grand larceny.”
" What’s tho case?”
44 May it piesso your honor,” said the proeoout*
ing attorney, 44 tho man is regularly indicted for
stealing a la'go train of money from the Colum*
bus Hotel.”
“ He is her? and ho pleads—”
" Ho pleads guilty, hut drunk.”
“ Guilty, hut drunk ! that is a moat extraordi
nary plea. Young man, you aro certain you
were drunk?”
" Yes sir.”
44 Where did you get your liquor?”
44 At Storriu’s.”
“ D’ye get none no where else ?”
on hia liquor, and afterward*
“ Not a drop sir.”
" You got drunk
stole his money ?”
,%4 Yes, sir.”
" Mr. Prosecutor,” said tho Judge, "do me th*
favor to enter a nolle prosequi in that man’s case-
That liquor of Sterritt’s is mean enough to make
a man do anything dirtv. I got druux on it the
other day myself, and stolo all of Hlorritt’s spoons.
Release the prisoner, Mr. Sheriff. I adjourn the
court.”
