Our corfWrv, JFrtwa, untl England have all inter

has hitherto cinfined herself to the non-official so-

Foreign Office, January Id, 1853
gf r ; According to the la>t accounts recuivnl
from you the Grand Duke of Tuscany still hesi
tate* on the subject of the Madiai.
Bu’this is a matter on which hesitation implies
fS ii punishment. It is ti e Home thing in cl-
lidemn a mat! to die by l!ie fire like S:t-
vonimhi, o< to put h m to death by the slow tor-
re of «n unhealthy prison.
It seems to be imagined, indeed, by some Gov-
irv.cntH on the Continent, that if thov avoid tlie
pctacle of an execution on the scaffild they
,ii escape the odium to themselves, and thcsyiii-
, v for their victims, which attends upin the
iiiidirooc.t of d-nth for oil* rices of political or
i^ioiis character.
Bui ibis is mi eriur. It is now well under. >od !

.*!< Xpert thui throughout Euri pc ho will be
ordered as having put u humuu being to death

U will be said, no doubt, that the offence of
rtncesCO Madiai was not that of being a Pro

ii the Roman Catholic ftith ; it at the Tuscan
vemment had the most merciful intention-, and
ant to have shortened the period >f impiison-
nt allotted hv law* to his offence; that such af
ire cannot be permitted to pass unpunished.
All this however will avail very lit'le. Through
i the civi fixed world, this example of religious
rsecution will excite abhorrence. Nor will it
die least of the reproaches addressed to the
iverr-n.ent of the Grand Duke that the name of
upold of Tuscany has been thus desecrated,
,! the example nt a benevolent Sovereign th^s

,ve no right to interfere. If this means that
icrfereiice by force of arms would not bo justi-

But if it be meant that tier Majesty Ims not the
