rode law of ambition and of Stale necessity on
which he In voles the overruling Providence of the

they prove that (*ct>. Pierce ia restrained by no
misgivings in the prosecution of n national object
and that he includes in what he calls “a spirit of
■elf-sacrificing patriotism,’’ the abandonment of
■o<ne of the highest moral duties on which a
•talesman can act. The South never produced a
puhlic man, not even Mr. Calhoun, who ho entirely
adopted the cause of Slavery without a w ord of
apology for its crimes. We must expect no more
of the exalted sertinicnts which animated Mr.
Clay and Mr. Webster, even while they currie!
the Compromise Act of IS50. Under the appear-
ance of an energetic t» v ! w ill, Gen. Uierc-
expresses and obeys absolutely ami implicitly the
tendency of the party which raised inn to power.
The choice of his Secretaries o: ;• mbers of the
Cabinet indicates the entnr disposition. and his
preparations are said to haw been carried on to

he materially contributed to the success of t'.p

of the lewon taught, is, that all unnatural organiza

acterized by ttu instability of purpose and action, result
only in injury to themselves or are discreditable to the
trade in general. Employers havo therefore nothing

his return he was elected one ol the judges of the

All this novelty and versatility, i«,nf course, ex
tremely entertaining t<> a people with whom the
exp riencP of a single generation constitutes an
tiquity. Hut we cannot so far divest ourselves of
the old-fashioned hub t* of Europe, as l-» forget

Be the result what it may, the present aspect ol the

cause. But tt is with Presidents, as with Princes
—the acclamations that surround their accession,
are aoractimes tlie clamor of Impca which cannot
be fulfilled, and we await the occurrence of more
serious events and more regular communications,
to form a more just and more complete opinion of
the character nnd policy of tho American Govern

73 year*, tlm last fifty of which, she lived an upright

obituary notice having known the deceased for the last
10 years can testify that sh« was a consistent friend, af

needless to mention that, after dovoting two thirds of

In oV humble judgment, one half of thoae who
call themselves "Jour Printers'’ are a disgrace to
the profession, front the sitnple fact, that they are
uneducutetl ami iiudiKciplined in tlu* first rudi

their start as absconding apprentices, and setup
for Journeymen after being able to *et type, Hfier

as one who baa never been inside a Printing Of

among them are “jacklegs” who cannot show the

honorable dp-charge from their identures.
One idea, further. The pi ices demanded by
the strikers of Montgomery are higher tiisn the
present low rates of I'riuiing will justl y. The
ii.Mximuni cash price of a weekly piper is now
$2,00 per annum, all over tii-* South, and we no
tice that one or two of our hug.* literary journals
are a minuting the suicidal folly of Htill further
reduction in their terms. How then can Bmpr.e-

incomes are decreased ? Besides, the prices now
paid are 2o per cent, higher in the South than at
H»e North, where the qualifications of printers are
a much higher standard.
