I.oaia in sentiment from the balance of the South. When tho cauace that produce this sentiment aro taken into consideration, the effect j* not surprising. Fully one-half of the population of 8t. Much the larger part of tho foreign-born popula tion ia German, and the Germans of the Northwest are generally abolilioniela—in jii, especially, their occupations com pete with slave labor, and they are rapidly driving the fat ter from the State. Three- fourth* of the emigrants to Missouri are w foreigner# and Northern men, and my ol them go there with a view of ling part iu the “irrepressible conflict" between the white and elate labor of the Statu. The ifeiitiibal and St. Josephs Rail road , tunning across tho northern division of the State from east te weal, is under abolition control nnil ie a great promoter of the free labor movernont. 'he number of gin hoiixca destroyed by in tbe cotton-planting States within the last few weeks ia to great as to attract tpeeitl attention. Harrell. Ia it possible that tbe abolition war against slaveholders, which lh such a signal failuro at Harper's Ferry, is now prosecuted in a more stealthy mode 1 Thero ia something remarkable about tkeae fires—if they are accidental, science must ba invoked to explain tho latent cause; if tho work of ayalrmutic design, exposure and acvsro punishment e demanded. Our Stain Alttitary Syatem. One of the recommendations of Governor Brown’s Message, which we cordially ap proved, was tho abolition of tho Militia of Georgia and encouragement to Yolunteer companies. Our militia drills— they are seldom witnessed now—are stand- ig subjects of ridicule. No knowledgo diatsvcr of military discipline is derived from them, nor do they promota to any sen sible extent an organisat^m that can bo quickly rendered vtTuclive in esno of sudden emergency. Oar people, in such an emer gency, would b* found prompt to rally to their country’s call, but it would bo aa citi- . an an organixed militia. Nor does the militia system even accomplish tho livable end of arming the people. Moat families aro provided with fire-arms, it ia truo, but they are kept for gaining purposes for individual protection, and not ti-caune lbs “able-bodied citizen” ia bound periodi- islly to attend drills “armed and oquippod it the Inw directs.” Tho system, even vhen enforced, is but a lax upon tho time if the people, without cffocling any good result. Volunteer oompanios, on tho other hand, acquire better discipline, maintain tnoro of ths spirit of an organisation, are provided with arms of uniform calibro and effect, and can generally bo much moro promptly collected at any place of rendez vous. The encouragement proposed to ho extended to such companies, as n correla tive of tho abolition of the militia drill, would lead to the formation of many more volunteer companies, and thus give greater vfScisncy to that min of tho public defence which could be rendered promptly available in case of invasion or rebellion. This alone is what is needed for the public defence, for ibo whole population of tho Huto would rally in time, and cuuld soon bo rundcrod aa |vnilabln as disciplined troops, if any umrr- need is «n increase of tho force ready equipped, ofiscered and disciplined, nsid capable of being concentrated al very short nolice; the patriotism and valor of the people aro a guaranies for every thing else. We are therefore glad to sco that out Senator, Col. Holt, has .o soon Introduced into the Legislature a proposition conte plating this reform, and we trust that will bo adopted by tlis present General Assembly. New York Ulectlnu. It is now ascertained that that portion of ths Black Republican Stolo ticket, which tho Americans refused to support, ia elected by a small majority ; and ths portion which tho Aincricsus supported, by a largo major ity. It ia to bo regrolted that there waa not a more general support of their “eclectic" ticket by the Americans throughout the Htato, as they undoubtedly had the atrongtli to defeat or elect whom they pleased on either of the other ticket*, hod they acted nauimously together. But the excitement Handing the mutual criminations of the Black Republicans and the Dem-rcrocy bout the Harper’s Ferry invasion helped o weaken tho independent “Smash the parly machine” enterprise, and to provoke tha Americans into the ranks of one or the ,ther greator parlies. It i» quit* probable flat that portion of the Democratic Htato ticket, endorsed by tho American Conven tion, would havo succeeded hut for ths injudicious management of the Harper * Ferry txctlemsol by tho Democracy, by which they failed to secure the ex peeled gain in New York City and lo.t balanco of the Hialo.
