The l.aFajettc Railroad.
We were pleased t.i learn, en Saturday,
from Mr. Towns of LaFayette, that the
amount required for the commencement of
the work on the Railroad from Opelika lo
La Fayette, had been subscribed, and that a
meeting will be held thia week to organize
a working force, locate the route* and com
mence operatiwns. The building of the
road to LaFayette is no longer a matter of
doubt. In its extension to Oxford (where
it will make important railroad connections,)
oar citizens are much interested, a> above
LaFayette it will tap the very kind of trade
which Columbus needs. The feeling in
favor of its rxtrnaion is represented to be
very favorable, and the people along the
route are aroused to the importance of con
necting themselves moro closely with the
commercial marls of the country. Hut they
need help, and they look to Columbus, as
the city most immediately interested, to pid
them in the extonsion. We must confess,
that wc have now but verja little hope that
our - city in its corporate capacity will aid
this or any other projected railroad. Un
fortunately, the clsims of several proponed
roads have been brought iulo conllict; one'
bus been used to checkmate the other, and
in the existing state of discord, local jeal
ousies, and personal prejudices and inter
ests, it is hardly probable that any cf the
rivals cun secure the desired nud deserved
city subscription. It has become the cus
tom her# 10 make a “Kilkenny cat” fight
over every improvement suggested, and
when the fur stups flying, only the tales ol
the improvements planned sic left. Uut it
is reasonable still to hope that uur business
men and capitalists, appreciating the merits
and tho probable profits of this rosd when
it ctTccts a junction at Oxford, will invest
in its stuck. Mr. Towles informs us, that
tbo subscriptions so fur obtained are gen
erally small for each individual, no man
severely taxing himself to aid the work,
and that such suflsetiplions by the business
men of Columbus nro all that is asked for.
li each merchant would take stock to tho
• mount only of tho profits irum additional
trade which bo may reasonably anticipate
from the road, or each citizen to the extent
ol Lis saving by a moro immediate connec
tion with up-country products, the road
would bo made secure. And we do not
1 think that there in any good reason to fear
that the Block would be groatly below par,!
il below par at all. Most of tho railroads
of the South arepnying handsomely. Tho
stock ol tho Central Railroad sells in qunu-
s at $120 lo $123 per share ; tho Ma-
aud Western road ha* just declared a
dividend of 0 per cent, on six mouths' busi-
|; and the Muscogee, tho Montgomery
and West i’oint, the Ueorgiu, and the Wes
tern and Atlantic Railroads, are all paying
very Lundsoiue profits. Can il be doubted,
that the LaFayette road, when completed
to Oxford, would transport immense quan
tities of the mineral and other products ol
the region traversed, as well us of the Ten-
ni-fcpcu and North Alabama commerce, fo^
which it would alfiird the most direct chan
nel of transportation to thia city 1 Wa
think not. We believe that the trado of
Columbus and of our lower river towns,
alone, in coal, iron, marble, livo stock, ba
con, flour, wheat, &c., (nearly all of which,
would rruch us by this only direct routo,
without breakage of bulk,) would amount
lt> u fair freight business for the road. Wc
trust that our citizens will tako its claims
into consideration, na well us ihn demands
of their own business and tho sugg* slious
of a prudent economy, und wc nro sutiklied
that tho result of tho invcutigation will bo
a considerable individual subscription I
tbe alock of the Opelika and Oxford road.

A FYvnclt Secret.
One evening, towards tho end of the Par

pretty bdudoir iy the Chausso d’Autin.—
Neither was young ; both being consul era**
bly over forty; but handsome, distinguish-
d, and easy of manners. They were aost-
d on each side of tho fire, in two of thoso
polite substitutes for tho couches of tho an
cient Romans, which m*ki u bed a mere
superfluous luxury. They weto smoking
long juirghilrs, and on tho table between
them weru various bottles and glosseit, tes
tifying that they find prepared for passing
some hours pleasantly, though it wa* eon-

ul each pursued his dreary occupation with
u evident feeling of enjoyment, which dif

Since it has been madn apparent that the
Democracy will uut vote for any Southern
Opposition tmn for Speaker, even when he
gets Northern Whig rotes enough to enable
them to elect him by tlicir votes, and that
they cannot command votes enough ft
member of thair own party to enable the
Sputbcrn Opposition lo elect him by their
urdivided support, wa regard tho election
of a Black Republican Speaker ns a ques
tion of time and mode only. It only

Douglas Democrats will go over directly to
Sherman and elect him (ns they t

w%it until the plurality rule can be adopted
by their help and thus render his election
certain. Wo think that their choice be
tween these alternatives will depend upon
the endutHtice of the Democrnry and
Southern Opposition in fighting off a vote
upon tho adoption of the plurality rule. If
n vote eau soon bo obtained on the question
of adopting ihni lull, tho Dougins Democ
